The various census enumerations from 1900 onward present their own unique challenges. First, as the 1890 census was destroyed by fire, this was the first census in twenty years that is still available for research. A great many births, marriages, and deaths occurred during the 1880-1900 period, making it extremely difficult to assign a young person to the correct parents. Second, I would estimate as much as 10% of the 1900 census is simply no longer legible, with the percentage higher than that for certain locations. Third, as always, the penmanship and literacy of the census taker leaves much to be desired. Fourth, the propensity of some people to essentially change their name on a whim ... alternately from first name to middle name to nickname, etc ... and also the tendency, particularly among the females, to “remain forever young”. In a number of instances, females did not age more than 4-5 years over a 20-year period of time.
Also, especially in the last few years before and the years immediately after the First World War, the regional population became very transient. It was no longer a case of finding a certain family in a different county, due to the creation of a new county. Families were moving, significant distances in some cases, and they were doing so frequently. Some were giving up their previous agricultural occupations to move into the industrial cities found in the region; Charlotte, North Carolina, and Spartanburg, South Carolina, to name only two.
There were only two Cobb families in Lincoln County in 1900 ... those of Beverly C. Cobb and Patrick Vann Cobb, both descendants of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.

Beverly Cobb Sr. was the son of Joseph Cameron Cobb and Margaret Butts, the grandson of William Halsey Cobb and Jane Connely, and the great grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young. He is shown here with his second wife who he married about 1891, and by whom he produced all his children.
There were four children born to this couple; the three listed above and son Beverly Jr, born in 1901. Beverly Cobb Sr died sometime before 1910. His widow and children were enumerated on the 1910 census of Lincoln County, and that was the last record of this family in North Carolina. Afterwards, they moved to Portsmouth, Virginia.
May was still living as late as 1930, in Portsmouth, with daughter Mary who married Holt W. Buth in 1924. Katherine married Charles Pickett, and they were living in Portsmouth as late as 1920.
Margaret and Beverly Jr apparently never married and died without issue. She was born 17 September 1892, and died in May 1974. He was born 28 April 1901, and died in August 1970. Margaret became a petroleum geologist, while Beverly became an attorney. In 1920, they were both still living with their widowed mother, and in 1930 they were sharing a residence in New York City. However, both died in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Patrick Vann Cobb was the son of Calvin McKelvin Cobb and Martha Sigmon, the grandson of John Cobb and Sarah Bumgarner, the great grandson of Benjamin M. Cobb and Violetta Morris, and the great-great grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young. He married Sarah Fish on 18 January 1891 in Catawba County.
There are discrepancies between the data given on this enumeration and what is popularly reported. Patrick and Sarah are both buried at New Hope Methodist Church in Lincoln County. Their headstones are inscribed with the following dates: Patrick, born 28 March 1868 and died 27 July 1935; Sarah, born 19 January 1872 and died 03 December 1947.
In a like manner regarding the children of this marriage: Cordia Eula was born 1896 and died 07 September 1949 in Charlotte, NC; and Grover A. born 24 February 1894 and died 22 November 1954 in Lincoln County.
Cordia married Roy Jones in Lincoln County on 17 November 1914, and lived in Lincoln until sometime after 1930, when they moved to Charlotte. Grover married Girthia Nantz sometime after 1930, and remained in Lincoln County all his life.
There was only one Cobb family in Catawba County in 1900, descended from Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County.

William Rufus Cobb was the son of Robert Cobb and Elenor Phillips, the grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great grandson of Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County. He was born 14 January 1828, and died 11 February 1902. He was buried at Wesley’s Chapel Methodist Church in Catawba County. He was married twice.
The first wife was Martha Linebarger who died in March 1862. There were five children by that marriage, all of who were long gone before this enumeration (refer to the 1860 census of Catawba County). The second wife, listed above, was Sophia P. Abernathy, who William married on 20 July 1862 in Catawba County. Sophia was born 05 August 1841, and died 09 October 1926. She is buried beside William.
This second marriage produced eight children, of which three are listed above ... Junius, Clara M., and Ina. The rest of the people found on this enumeration were all grandchildren ... the offspring of son Avery M. Cobb, born about 1865 and last found in the family household on the 1880 census.
Avery’s omission from this census is unexplained, perhaps a simple error on the part of the census taker. But in any event, he remarried on 29 September 1901, to Anna G. Kindall, and in 1910 was living in Caldwell County with her and all his children.
Anna Kindall was Avery’s second wife. His first wife was Ada Kale, who he married on 27 March 1887. She was recently deceased at the time of this enumeration. That marriage produced six children, all of who are listed above ... Eva May, William Edward, Florence, Bessie, Gladys, and the as yet un-named infant female.
The other children of William and Sophia not listed on this enumeration were:
1. Susan born 1866. Married in Catawba County to Thomas J. Whitener on 19 May 1885. They had eleven children and she was still living in Catawba as late as 1930.
2. Ella M. born about 1868. She married in Catawba County on 25 December 1887, to William T. Helton. She was deceased by 1903.
3. Henry Eugene born 1871. Married Lucy Clay on 24 May 1891. Moved to Caldwell County, North Carolina. He was deceased by 1920.
4. Lucy was born 18 April 1873, and died 04 July 1901. She is buried at Wesley’s Chapel Cemetery in Catawba County. She married George P. Clay in Catawba County, on 24 September 1899.
Junius William was born 24 June 1879, and died 07 November 1966. He is buried at Wesley’s Chapel in Catawba County. He married in Catawba County, to Willie Grace Hilton, on 08 December 1901. She was born 24 June 1882, and died 20 February 1948. She is buried with her husband.
There were essentially three Cobb families in Burke County in 1900, all descendants of one man ... James S. Cobb and his two wives, Frances “Fanny” Hilton / Helton and Barbara Ann Ford.
James’ ancestry is not positively established. He is definitely identified on three census reports ... 1850 Catawba County, 1860 Cleveland County, and 1870 back in Catawba County. It is known he married twice: (1) Frances “Fanny” Hilton / Helton on 05 February 1838 in Lincoln County, and (2) Barbara Ann Ford on 22 July 1858 in Cleveland County. He died sometime before 1880.
Due to the fact that he and his descendants seemed to concentrate more in the northern part of the region, there is an almost overwhelming temptation to say he was a descendant of Clisby Cobb Sr and Margaret Halsey Young. A census analysis shows that his father could have been John Cobb, son of Clisby Cobb Sr. According to the 1810 census of Lincoln County; John had a son less than ten years of age. Allowing for census error, this could have been James.
If James was not a relative of Clisby Cobb, at least three other men could have been his father. First, the Joseph Cobb who appears only once on a census ... the 1820 enumeration of Lincoln County: At that time he had three males in his household born between 1810-1820. Again, one can only speculate on Joseph’s ancestry or what became of his descendants after 1820. Secondly, Shadrick Cobb who appears on census reports for Lincoln County from 1810-1840, had two sons born between 1815-1820. Finally, Walter B. Cobb, son of William Cobb and Mary “Polly” Abernathy, and grandson of Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County, had a son born 1816-1820 that apparently did not move with his parents to Missouri in the late 1820’s.
A DNA analysis could determine a relationship with Walter Cobb, and descendancy from Ambrose Cobb.

Note --- Robert Cobb was the
Enumerator for the town of Morganton for this census.
Every Cobb found in Burke County in 1900 was either the child or grandchild of Robert Alexander Cobb, son of James Cobb and Frances “Fanny” Hilton / Helton. He was born 01 October 1839 and died 26 March 1901. He married Matilda Maxine Falls, daughter of John B. and Elizabeth Falls, in Cleveland County on 27 July 1862. She was born 15 March 1839 and died 26 July 1923.
Robert and Matilda had four children ... Lilly shown above, Charles Chester in 1863, William Theodore Gettys in 1867, and Mittie F. in 1878, all of who will be shown below. Robert was enumerated in 1850 in Catawba County, in 1860 in Cleveland, and from 1870 to 1900 in Burke County.
The two Cobb grandchildren shown above are somewhat mysterious in the sense that their father cannot be positively identified. This enumeration was their one and only appearance on a census.

Charles Chester Cobb was the son of Robert Cobb and Matilda Falls, above. He was born in January 1863 as shown, and died sometime after April 1930 in Texas. He married Donna S. Bristol in Burke County on 16 November 1892. As indicated she was born in December 1866 and died sometime after 1920 in Texas (see the 1910 report for Burke County).
At the time of this enumeration, Charles was living two doors from his parents, with sister Mittie and her husband Hall Bridgers in between.
Charles and Donnie had five children ... Ellerbe and Altha shown above, Jeter P. shortly after this enumeration in 1900, Warren A. in 1902, and Harold Gibson in 1913.

William Eugene “Wally” Cobb was the son of James S. Cobb and his second wife Barbara Ann Ford. He was born 14 February 1866 in either Cleveland or Catawba County, and died 20 June 1939. He is buried at Oak Hill Methodist Church in Burke County, where he spent at least the last forty years of his life.
William was married twice: (1) Mahala Jane “Jenny” Ledford was born in October 1866 and died in 1907. She is buried with her husband who she married about 1890. (2) Claudia Louise Benfield was born 06 March 1889 and died 16 August 1967. She is also buried at Oak Hill. She married William shortly before the 1910 census.
William and Mahalie had eight children ... the four shown above plus Charles C. in 1901, Marie M. in 1903, Minnie J. in 1905, and William H. in 1907.
William produced six more children with his second wife Claudia ... Edwin Yates in 1910, Albert G. in 1915, Eula Louise in 1917, Margaret G. in 1920, Benjamin L. in 1923, and Annie L. in 1927.
At least eleven members of this family are buried at Oak Hill Methodist Church in Burke County:
William E. Cobb Dates given above
Mahala Jane Ledford Dates given above
Claudia Louise Benfield Dates given above
Brenta E. 1892 – 1910 (Listed as Brenda)
Frank Dewitt Cobb Sr 11 Dec 1895 – 16 July 1971
Viola Cuthbertson Cobb 19 Mar 1912 – 05 Mar 1991 (w/o Frank D. Sr)
Frank Dewitt Cobb Jr 04 Dec 1941 – 26 Aug 1954 (s/o Frank & Viola)
Robert C. Cobb Sr 01 Mar 1897 – 14 Oct 1971 (s/o Wm & Mahala)
Ettie Devault Cobb 06 July 1898 – 11 Oct 1988 (w/o Robert C.)
John Jones Cobb 05 Mar 1898 – 29 Sep 1971 (s/o Wm & Mahala)
Charles C. Cobb 1901 – 1983 (s/o Wm & Mahala)
This study will of course conclude with the 1930 census. As of that date, all the known surviving members of this family were still living in Burke County.
Now for the mystery: Who was the elder Mary Cobb, age 55, in this household? One thing is certain ... Although listed as the Mother of the head of the household; she was not the mother of William Cobb. His mother was Barbara Ann Ford, as confirmed by census reports from William’s birth to the time he married and left home. I can think of only two possibilities: (1) She was actually the mother of William’s wife, Mahala Ledford, and thus William’s mother in law, or (2) William’s father, James S. Cobb, married a third time after 1880 ... the date of the last record of his second wife Barbara Ann Ford. This would have made Mary the stepmother of William Cobb. This does seem unlikely however, as there would have been about a 30-year age gap between Mary and James S. Cobb.
There were two Cobb families in Caldwell County in 1900, descendants of Clisby Cobb Sr and Margaret Halsey Young.

Calvin was the son of Clisby G. Cobb and Elizabeth West, the grandson of William Halsey Cobb and Jane Connely, and the great grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young. He lived in Caldwell County his entire life, and is found on census enumerations there from 1850 to 1920. Rebecca’s maiden name is unknown, but successive census reports agree they married in 1876.
Little has been learned about this family. Calvin and Rebecca had five children, all shown above. The legibility of census reports is difficult to positively state the youngest daughter’s name was Cordia, it may have been Connie. The oldest child was Joseph C. Cobb, and he disappeared after 1920. Next was John Archie, who was still living in Caldwell County as late as 1930. Afterwards came Callie M. who married a widower named Hawkins shortly after the 1920 census. He had two young children from a previous marriage, and one by Callie ... a son Donald in 1922. By 1930, Mr. Hawkins was deceased and Callie and her children had moved in with her brother John Archie Cobb.
“Sylvester” was actually Thomas Sylvester Cobb. He married Rosa “Last Name Unknown” shortly after the 1910 census, and produced four children by her ... Thomas A. in 1910, Jack in 1911, Grace in 1913, and Mary in 1916. He was still living in Caldwell County as late as 1930.

John Avery Cobb was also the son of Clisby G. Cobb and Elizabeth West, the brother of Calvin Cobb above. Very little has been discovered concerning this family. They were still in Caldwell County in 1910 and disappeared afterwards. At the time of this 1900 enumeration Sarah declared she had given birth to three children, two of who were still living. Only two children can be identified with these parents ... from the 1880 census of Caldwell County. Arch E. was born in 1876 and Brady A.C. was born in 1878. That 1880 census is the only record of these two individuals.

Depending on which census one is studying, this name is alternately spelled Hice – Hays – Haab - or Haas. I am inclined to think it was correctly spelled HAAS, as that name was commonly found in the region being examined here from very early on.
Renie was Mary Serena Cobb, daughter of Clisby G. Cobb and Elizabeth West, and sister of Calvin and John Avery Cobb above.
Again referring to the theme on how erroneous census reports can be, this couple is found on every census report for Caldwell County from 1880 to 1930 ... and quite literally, the only thing they all seem to concur on is that there were no children produced from this marriage. Indeed, the discrepancies in date of birth (and even place of birth in one case) are frankly outlandish. One can only wonder if the census taker didn’t complete the enumeration interview while sitting under a shade tree somewhere with his picnic basket close at hand.
For the record, this 1900 enumeration comes the closest to being correct of all the reports this couple can be found on. Yes, there was a large age gap between Julius and Serena, with her being his senior by some fifteen years!
Final notes on this couple: In 1880, Serena’s widowed mother Elizabeth West Cobb was living in this household, next door to Serena’s brother John Avery Cobb. On this 1900 enumeration, Julius and Serena were living next door to her brother Calvin.

Caution: Due to the
deterioration of the original census, the enumeration for this family is
virtually illegible. The data given above
is a reconstruction compiled from subsequent census reports and other sources.
Robert Lee Cobb was the son of Thompson / Thomas Cobb, and grandson of the widow Nancy Cobb found on the 1850 census of Cleveland County. She was born 1805-1810 in North Carolina, and was living in Cleveland County as late as 1870. Depending on which census is being viewed, this man had a number of aliases ... Jesse, Nimrod, Roddey, and Rodney. To his descendants he is known as “Tink”.
DNA analysis has shown that this family is descended from the man known as Henry Cobb “the Elder” who was born about 1596 in England, and died in 1679 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. It is known that Henry had descendants in the area of Caswell County, North Carolina, at least a decade before the American Revolution; and, it is tempting to believe this family had migrated from there to Cleveland County.
While we cannot go very far backward in time, there is considerable information available on Robert Cobb and his descendants. He was born 09 February 1867 in South Carolina, and died 23 June 1944. He is buried at Lavonia Baptist Church in Cleveland County where he lived all his life.
Robert was married three times ... (1st) His first wife is yet unknown, but the 1910 census indicates they married about 1886, and produced at least four children before she died about 1896 ... William L. Cobb was the son of the John G. Cobb who first appears on the 1850 census of York District, South Carolina. DNA analysis has shown that descendants of this Cobb family line are genetically linked to the pedigree of the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.
William and wife Rachel had seven children, all listed here. This enumeration is the last record of this entire family, with the exception of son Thomas. He married Ada M. Radford in Cherokee County in 1904, and was still living there as late as 1930.

Note: The 1900 census data for
this family is so erroneous as to make one believe it is not the correct group
of people at all. The ages of both
Lawson and wife Laura are overstated by almost ten years. The date of their marriage is misstated by
20 years. And the birth years of all
the children are under stated by as much as 15 years. All considered, the 1900 census is totally unreliable.
Lawson Henry Cobb was the son of Robert Cobb Jr and Leanah Hope, the grandson of Robert Cobb Sr and Elenor Phillips, the great grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great-great grandson of the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.
Lawson was born in what is now Gaston County, North Carolina. He lived in Lincoln County until after 1880, when he moved to Cherokee County, South Carolina.
Lawson and wife Laura had nine children:
1. Mamie was born 09 June 1872, and died 19 December 1926. Buried Mountain Rest Cemetery in Cleveland County, North Carolina.
2. Bemby/Beverly was born 1875. Died 27 November 1930 in York County, South Carolina.
3. James C. was born in 1879. Married Gertie Byars. Moved to Richland County, South Carolina.
4. Fannie was born 15 January 1879, and died 30 October 1954. Married John J. Guyton. Buried Mountain Rest Cemetery in Cleveland County, North Carolina.
5. Minnie L. was born 27 April 1882, and died 15 July 1968 in Cherokee County. Married John O. Hambright.

7. Seymore was born in 1887. Married Mary Malinda Moss. Was still living in Cherokee County in 1930.

Margaret “Maggie” Cobb Bagwell was the sister of Nannie and Mary, and daughter of the J.A. and Elizabeth Cobb that appears only on the 1860 census of Greenville District, South Carolina. Two census report and the South Carolina death index indicate she was born in 1859. Her omission from the 1860 and 1870 census is simply unexplained.
Maggie married William T. Bagwell about 1877, probably in Spartanburg County. He was born about 1857, and has indicated above he died between 1893 and 1900. Maggie lived in Spartanburg County until her death on 15 April 1927.

Ed L. Cobb Born May 1874 SC
H/H of Rankin Hall
Allowing for error in reporting date of birth, this could have been the son of Nancy Cobb, daughter of the J.A. Cobb and wife Elizabeth that appeared on the 1860 census of Greenville District, South Carolina. Nancy never married, and was enumerated in her mother’s household until 1880. Elizabeth died in 1886, and afterwards Nancy lived between her sisters Martha Wood and Maggie Bagwell, and son Eddie.
