This was the family of Beverly C. Cobb Sr, son of Joseph Cameron Cobb and Margaret Eliza Butts, grandson of William Halsey Cobb and Jane Connely, and great grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.  He was born in 1848, was an attorney by profession, and had died in Lincoln County since the previous enumeration in 1900.

This is the last record of this family in North Carolina.  By 1920, May had moved with her children to Portsmouth, Virginia.  By 1920, daughter Catherine had already married Charles Pickett, and they were living in May’s household.  In 1924, daughter Mary married Holt W. Buth.  They were still living in Portsmouth as late as 1930, with a child Mary who was born in 1926.

Daughter Margaret and son Beverly Jr apparently never married and died without issue.  She became a petroleum geologist and he an attorney.  In 1920 they were both still living with their mother, but by 1930 they were sharing a residence in New York City.  Margaret was born 17 September 1892, and died in May 1974.  Beverly Jr was born 28 April 1901, and died in August 1970.  Both died in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Patrick and Sarah had only the two children shown above, Grover and Cordia.  Grover was born 24 February 1894, and died 22 November 1954.  He married Girthia Nantz and had at least four children.  Cordia married Roy Jones in Lincoln County on 17 November 1914.  They remained in Lincoln until after 1930, when they moved to Charlotte, North Carolina.  Cordia died there 07 September 1949.  She and Roy apparently had only one child, son Earl born in 1916.

Junius William Cobb was the son of William Rufus Cobb and Sophia Abernathy, the grandson of Robert Cobb and Elenor Phillips, the great grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great-great grandson of the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County.  Junius was born 24 June 1879, and died 07 November 1966.  He married Willie Grace Hilton on 08 December 1901 in Catawba County.  She was born 24 June 1882, and died 20 February 1948.  They are both buried at Wesley’s Chapel Methodist Church in Catawba County.

On this enumeration Junius’ widowed mother Sophia Abernathy Cobb is shown in his household.  His father William had died in 1902.  Sophia died in 1926, and was buried beside her husband at Wesley’s Chapel Methodist Church in Catawba County.

Junius and Grace had eight children; the three shown above plus Roby L. 1911 ... Bernice E. 1916 ... Annie Pearl 1918 ... Leona G 1922 ... and Bessie 1902, who for some unexplained reason was not enumerated on a census in her parent’s household until 1930.  This is possibly explained by the badly deteriorated condition of the census and the difficulty in reading it.

Since the previous census in 1900, William Rufus Cobb has died and his widow Sophia has moved in with their son Junius.  By the next enumeration in 1920, the only children remaining in Junius’ household will be his three youngest.

Avery was married twice.  His first wife was Ada Kale, who he married on 27 March 1887.  She died (probably from childbirth complications) very shortly before the June 1900 census of Catawba County.  At that time the five oldest children shown above and a newborn female were all living in the household of Avery’s parents.  The infant was born in February 1900, making it possible to estimate the death date of her mother.  It is noted that the child also did not survive, as there is no further record of her.

Avery is shown here with his second wife Anna G. Kindall who he married on 29 September 1901.  They had seven children; the two youngest shown above plus twins Jessie (female) and James D 1911 ... Mary 1918 ... Hattie 1921 ... and Cecil 1928.

By 1920, Avery had moved his family to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, where they were still living as late as 1930.

Albertus F. Cobb was the son of James S. Morgan about 1844, and by her had eight children, all listed above.  The son listed as Foust was actually Forest F., and he was the only child known to have left Rutherford County.  He married about 1912, and moved to St. Lucie County, Florida sometime after 1920.  This enumeration is the last record of son Lloyd, and it is presumed he died young.  All the rest were still living in Rutherford in 1920.

George Scott Cobb was the son of William Cobb and Martha Harmon.  He was born in 1848, and died 20 February 1927 in York County, South Carolina.  He married Rachel “Last Name Unknown” about 1869.  She was born in 1848, and died 07 January 1917 in York County.  After their marriage they moved to South Carolina, living for a time in Union County before finally settling in York County.

The 1900 census is so badly deteriorated it is virtually impossible to extract any information concerning this family.  When compared to this enumeration and the one following in 1920, it becomes apparent that George and Rachel had at least seven children; Avlona 1871 ... William A. 1873 ... Smith Auston 1874 ... Lula E. 1877 ... George M. 1879 ... John 1882, shown above ... and Bertha in 1888.  It seems probable that granddaughter Benetta shown above was the child of son John Cobb and wife Sallie who were living nearby.

The ancestry of Robert Cobb is not known.  He first appears in the household of his widowed mother Harriet Cobb on the 1880 census of Gaston County, North Carolina.  By 1900 he was living in Cherokee County, South Carolina, and remained there all his life.

Robert was born in January 1868, and died 27 October 1945.  He married Nancy Isabella Roberts about 1890.  She was born in February 1873, and died 15 January 1926.

Robert and Nancy had six children, all shown above.

This individual is not positively identified, but it seems most likely he was the son of the John G. Cobb first identified on the 1850 census of York District, South Carolina.  That individual was born about 1854.  He was listed in his parent’s household in 1860 and 1870.  By 1873, he had married a Mary “Last Name Unknown” who was at least ten years his senior.  By her one child was produced, son George in 1873.  Their family appears on the 1880 census of York County, South Carolina.

As shown above, John had been married previously.  His current wife Hamena (the census was almost impossible to read) claimed to have given birth three times, with all three children still living.  There are four children listed in the household, and it is risky to assign them to either of John’s two marriages.  However, since John stated he had been married “this time” 18 years, it would seem that Joseph, John, and Thomas were the natural children of the current wife.

In any event, Hamena evidently died quite soon after this enumeration.  In 1920, John was living in Gaston County, North Carolina, with a third wife Dicy who he married about 1910.  In 1930, they were living in Cherokee County, South Carolina.  They had no children.

Martha Wood was the sister of Nancy and Mary Cobb, all daughters of the J.A. Cobb and wife Elizabeth who are first identified on the 1860 census of Greenville District, South Carolina.  The father was deceased by 1870, and the widow had relocated to Spartanburg County, where she died in 1886.

Martha married James T. Wood about 1875.  He died in 1917.  They had at least three children: Mamie in 1876, Charles in 1877, and Thomas in 1889.  All the Woods were still living in Spartanburg County as late as 1920.

Nancy and Mary Cobb never married and lived at various times with their married sisters Martha Wood and Maggie Bagwell.  Mary died in 1911 and was buried at Zoar Methodist Church in Spartanburg County, with her mother who died in 1886.

Nancy Jane had a son Eddie born about 1877.  By 1920, Nancy was living with him, where she apparently remained the rest of her life.  She was born 15 April 1859, and died 23 March 1941.  She is also buried at Zoar Methodist Church in Spartanburg County.

As indicated above, Lawrence had recently married Ada Morris.  Apparently she did not live long after this enumeration, as by 1920 Lawrence was back in his parent’s household in Cleveland County, North Carolina.  He did not remarry until at least after 1930.
