BIOGRAPHY: 1912 History of Sangamon County Illinois, pages 1736,1737 shows: Cornelius WOODRUFF, a prominent farmer of Capital Township, Sangamon County,Illinois an d an honored veteran of the Civil War, was born in Franklin county, KY, Oct 25, 1844, son o f John and Mary (Petty) Woodruff, the former a native of Kentucky and the latter of Virginia . The father was a carpenter and spent his entire life in Kentucky, where he and his wife bot h died. They had four sons and four dauthters and besides Cornelius there is one son,William and on d aughter, Katherine (this would by your Ann Catherine), surviving. The father of John H. Woodr uff, Odiah Woodruff, was born in New Jersey and served seven years in the Continental Army. H e was aide-de-camp to Gen. LaFayette and held the horse of that distinguished officer while h e went to the Battle of Brandywine. He was present at the siege of York. The boyhood of Cornelius Woodruff was spent in his native state, where he recieved his e ducation, and as a boy he worked on a farm and cut wood. He came to Springfield, in 1857, an d began working in a saw-mill, where he remained about three years, and spent three years o n a farm. He enlisted at Camp Butler, Illinois, July 25, 1861, in Company I, One Hundred Four teenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving three years and was mustered out at Camp Butler . He participated in every battle where his company took part during the time of his service , among them being: Vicksburg and Guntown, Mississippi. He was captured and spent six month s in Andersonville Prison, where he won the gratitude of his fellow-prisoners by discoverin g the famous spring in prison-yard. He served some time under Gen. Sherman. At the close of t he war he returned to Sangamon county and spent six years farming there, then moved to Champa ign county and for twelve years, engaged in farming and conductinig a meat business, after wh ich he spent two years as a prison-keeper in the city prison. Returning to Champaign county , he spent another four years in butcher business, then again located to Springfield, sangamo n.; He subsequently went to New Mexico, where he entered land and engaged in farming. He spen t three years in that state and still owns the land. Upon his return to Springfield, he engag ed in farming and owns property in Springfield. He is a prominent member of Stephenson Post, k G.A.R. and has a war record that is a credit to his bravery and faitherful service. He is a n intelligent and energetic farmer and business man and has been successful in whatever he ha s undertaken. In politics he is a Republican and is proud of the fact that his first Presiden tial vote was cast for Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Woodruff was married in Springfield, in 1875, to Miss Cinderella Van Kirk, a nativ e of Ohio, whose father emigrated from that state to Sangamon county in an early day and enga ged in farming. Both her parents died in the county and she died in 1906. Two children were b orn of this union: Mary, wife of Arthur Sales of Champaign county, and Marion, who joined th e United States Naval Service and is now stationed in China on the Battleship "New York", bei ng now nineteen years of age. At the state fair of Illinois held in 1910, Mr. Woodruff was th e "Old fiddler" at the old pioneer relicdisplay, and still usese the violin that he carried t hrough the Civil War, which is a very fine instrument. David was then pressed into the re bel army, and was placed in command of a wagon train. Watching his opportunity, he cut fou r mules from a wagon, swam three of them across Green river, and succeeded in reaching the Un ion Lines. He visited his old home in Sangamon and enlisted in Co. B., 30th Ill.
