Coigach and the other parts of Lochbroom had a pivotal role in the 1745 Rebellion; people came out on both sides of the struggle, and the geography played host to both Rebels and supporters of the Government. In the dieing days of the war leaders of the Government forces fled from Sutherland through Lochbroom, staying with the Rev. James Robertson. Following collapse of the Rebellion the fugitive Prince considered hiding "among the MacKenzies of Seaforth's country" at Lochbroom. French privateers then made repeated voyages to the loch attempting to rescue Charlie, playing cat and mouse with British Navy ships among the Summer Isles. It took many decades for the farms and forests of Coigach to recover from the destructive retribution of the British Marines.
Names and descriptions of people known to have been "out" in the '45 Rebellion come mostly from a list compiled from reports sent from the Supervisors of Excise to the Commissioners of Excise, and from government lists of prisoners compiled and preserved in State Papers.
Several books have been written by people who have ably studied and excerpted from those sources. Besides those works many other books, genealogies, and contemporary newspaper accounts note others involved. This file attempts to name all the players affecting Lochbroom, including Rebel, Government, and sitting on the fence. Included as relavent though not from Lochbroom themselves are the other members of Cromarty's Regiment from other parts of Ross & Cromarty, and Jacobites from Sutherland and Caithness who likely were swept up with the Regiment when it travelled north. Also included are spouses and parents of Rebels who tried to keep a foot in the government camp, and the famous "Strong Minister" of Lochbroom, James Robertson, who fought to keep his parishoners out of the Rebellion, then travelled to London to plead for mercy at their trials. Further included are soldiers who fought for the government, the sailors who chased French ships around the Summer Isles, and the marines who ravaged the countryside in retribution. For sake of completion several non Scots are included, such as officers in the Spanish service captured with the Regiment, and French privateers and cadets trying to rescue Bonny Prince Charlie.
This is one of several files dealing with Jacobite matters on this website, see also;
- PRISONERS: primarly from lists made by government forces
- OTHER LOCHBROOM JACOBITES; people noted elsewhere as Jacobites, some were non-captured members of Cromartie's Regiment, others were spouses and family (Colin Dearg MK, Murdo MK of Dingwall, Ardloch, Keppoch, and others)
- HANOVERIANS: most Lochbroom people were neutral in alegiance, however not all those committed were Jacobites. (note Rev James Robertson, Aulay MacAulay, reserve non Lochbroom Hanoverians for next category)
- OTHERS: noted here are the heritors who sat out the Rebellion, and Jacobites, Hanoverians, and foreigners with direct contact or afffect on Lochbroom.

The defining battle of the Rebellion was held 16 April, 1746 at Culloden, near Inverness. Some of the following people were captured there. However, most Rebels from Lochbroom were in the Earl of Cromarty's Regiment, which missed the battle. They had earlier been tasked with occupying Sutherland and Caithness, attempting to recover French gold landed there, and to gather both recruits and "cess" (tax moneys). Unwelcome strangers, the Sutherlands and MacKays of the countys resisted the Rebels, and while the Regiment was rushing south from Dunrobin Castle the local militia ambushed them the day before Culloden. The Prisoner lists are heavy with people captured then, from the Earl and his son, to humble cattle herds. Many escaped from the disaster at Dunrobin, or were elsewhere at the time. The Excise list helps identify some of those, various histories name others, but most others remain not noted.
Further to the cold lists, some contemporary correspondance survives, 17 March, 1747 William Jack, a prisoner at Tilbury Fort doomed to be Transported a few weeks later on the 31st to Barbadoes, remarks on his time aboard the rotting ship hulks used as floating prisons (see Lyon, Volume 3, page 65 for full transcription, spelling in this excerpt is modernized);
I was eight months and eight days on sea, of which time I was eight weeks upon half pound and twelve ounces oatmeal and a bottle of water in the twenty four hours, which we was obliged to make meall water in the bottom of an old bottle. There was one hundred and twenty five put on board at Inverness on the James and Mary of Fyfe. In the latter end of June we was put board of a transport four hundred and fifty tons called the Liberty and Property which we continued the rest of the eight months upon twelve ounces of oat shilling as it came from the milln.There was thirty two prisoners more put a board of the said Liberty and Property, which makes on hundred and fifty seven, and when we came ashore we was but forty nine in life; which would been no great surprise if there had not been on, conform to our usages.
They would take us from the hold in a rope and hysed
[tied] us to the yardarm and let us fall in the sea in order for ducking of us, and tieing us to the mast and whipping us if we but made water in the hold. This was done to us when we was not able to stand. I will leave it to the readers to judge what condition they might been in themselves with the above treatment. We had neither bed nor bed clothes nor clothes to keep us warm in the daytime. The ships ballast was black earth and small stones, which we was obliged dig holes to lie in to for to keep us warm till the first day of November that every man got about three yards of gross harn filled with straw, but no bed clothes. I will not trouble you any more till I see you.
Background on the sad prison history of many of the captured Jacobites at Tilbury Fort is well presented in a file at http://www.thurrock.gov.uk/heritage/content.php?page=factfiles_details&id=5
In the modern era such cruel treatment of prisoners leading two thirds to death in custody would be a war crime. Then it was part of a pattern of abuse that included orders to kill all wounded captured Jacobites on the battlefield of Culloden (last mainland battle of the Rebellion).
Those noted as "Prisoners" below were mostly from "Cromarty's Regiment", with a few recruited by Coll MacDonnell of Barisdale, who though part of the Glengarry MacDonald family had tack of some lands in Assynt, and raised his own Regiment, including a recruiting drive through Lochbroom and Coigach (sometimes Barrisdale was referred to as "Lieut-Colonel" of Glengarry's Regiment, others as Colonel of his own, which is probably a closer description of the situation, as even if under Glengarry, his command was of his own people, fiercely loyal "Highland Banditti"). The lists of prisoners are mostly from two books. The "References" at the end of the file includes more fuller descriptions of the sources noted in them, and links where found to the increasing number of them that have been digitized online, primarly through http://www.archive.org and http://books.google.com
In most cases I have been able to trace the prisoners back through the sources noted in the books to copies of the original documents and in some cases found other confirming sources, but the two books remain extraodinary works of scholarship that will remain primary resources for generations to come, and so should be credited here at the start of this file;
| |||||||||||||||
The more recent edition of that book (I have not yet looked at), title enlarged, is;

The second major source is;
|
The original prisoner records were handwritten by people whose language, English, was not that of most of the listees, Gaelic, also those record takers were not familiar with placenames in the Highlands, modern "Fodderty" became then "Fottertie", the blacksmith Alexander MacLennan is noted as from "Agherahard" or "Achnahaird" (that second spelling matching the modern version). Surnames in one source were noted in form as "M'Leod", in the other as "McLeod", most would have been illiterate with no preferred spelling, the modern accepted method is "MacLeod", so that is the form I use for this file.
Some of the Prisoners below also have background in the list of persons concerned in the Rebellion gathered by the Commissioners of Excise. Some of that info was used by the compilers of the above noted two books, with referral to footnotes "P.C." and "R.P.C.".
"Muster Roll" starts with officers, then privates, "Prisoners of the '45" is straight alphabetical, for this file I have chosen that first method for ordering the listees.
Key to the sources is included at the bottom of the file.
In addition, a few names have become known from other than those two major sources. I include description and where known links to those sources.

This was not expected, as the Lord President had offered him a commission as Captain of one of the Independent Companies. He raised a body of Mackenzies in Lochbroom and Coigach and joined the Prince on the return of the army from the English campaign. He and his father, Barisdale, Glengyle, and Mackinnon were sent with 1500 men to try to recover the treasure on the Prince Charles (ex Hazard) which had been driven ashore at Tongue, on 25th March 1746, and to raise money in Sutherland and Caithness. They were surprised and captured at Dunrobin and taken to London, and a large number of their men were taken prisoners. When tried for high treason on 20th Dec. 1746 Lord Macleod pleaded guilty. He was pardoned on 22nd Jan. 1748 on condition that within six months of attaining his majority he should convey to the Crown all his rights in the Estates of the Earldom. This he did, and went abroad and entered the Swedish service, becoming a Colonel. He returned home in 1777 and raised the 'Macleod Highlanders,' with which he served in India. The family estates were returned to him by Act of Parliament in 1784. He died in 1789. -- Scots Peerage, iii. 82; Origins, 96; Scots Magazine, 1746, 593, 1748, 43; Egerton, 2000-17.

"[he] was a Captain in the Jacobite army under the Earl of Cromarty in 1745-46 and commanded the men of Ballone who were out on that occasion. He was captured at Dunrobin on the 15th of April, 1746, conveyed to London, but afterwards, through the instrumentality of the Rev. James Robertson, the famous "Ministear Laider" of Lochbroom, obtained his release, and subsequently rewarded his benefactor by marrying the lady to whom the reverend gentleman was engaged - Mary, daughter of William Mackenzie of Achilty and Kinnahaird, with issue - (1) Kenneth, served heir to his father in Badluachrach in 1772; (2) Alexander, who married Barbara Maclean, with issue - two sons and a daughter; (3) Donald of Fasna-crionach, who married Kelly Fisher, Greenock, with issue - a son, Kenneth."- Roderick MacKenzie of Achiltibuie, noted below as a Lieutenant and Tacksman of Achiltibuie in Coigach, was married to Catherine MacKenzie, who noted herself in 1767 (NAS E746/113/60-1) as a daughter of "Lady Ballone", who she states was "Mrs MacKenzie of Ballone, Niece to that once eminant Lawyer Sir George MacKenzie", who is elsewhere noted as wife of Alexander III of Ballone. Therefore, Colin was brother-in-law to Roderick, who was one of the few other pardoned Jacobites.

- HOME OR ORIGIN: Lochbroom
- AGE: 45
- NOTES AND AUTHORITIES: Forester to Lord Cromarty. He claimed duress and made frequent efforts to escape. He was tried in London and sentenced to death. By the intercession of Rev. James Robertson, Lochbroom, with the Duke of Cumberland, he was pardoned and released on condition of leaving the country permanently, and 'transporting himself to America.' - Celtic Magazine, iii (1877-78), 261; Scots Magazine, Oct. 1748, 496; S.P.D., 84-2; P.R., 3625-14; Allardyce, Volume 2, page 469; Egerton, 2000-52; Baga, lxix. 174.
Other notes:
- Noted as "M'Kenzie, Hector (Ensign)". See evidence from his trial in Allardyce, Volume 2, page 469 in the file at Allardyce
- The second Statistical Account includes mentions of the efforts of Minister Robertson to secure a pardon for Hector;
Mr Robertson set out on a journey of 700 miles, to London (an arduous undertaking at that time,) at his own private expence, that he might use all his influence in their behalf. He arrived, while Hector Mackenzie, a retainer of the Earl of Cromarty, and a respectable man, was on his trial; and to his unspeakable mortification, in spite of all his interest and exertions, Mackenzie was condemned, but the "Minisltar Laidir" was not thus to be put on: He went directly to the Duke of Newcastle, and earnestly entreated his intercession with the Sovereign, for mercy to the condemned criminal. The Duke received him favourably, and satisfied him with a fair promise, that the man's life would be spared. He was, however, soon alarmed, by a hint from some of his friends, that such promises by the Duke were not always to be relied on; and worked his honest way again into the presence of his Grace. where he earnestly renewed his intercession. The Duke, to get rid of his importunity, renewed his promise, with tbe offer of his hand. The minister grasped his hand in his own awful fist, and gave it such a squeeze, that his Grace in agony, exclaimed, "Yes, yes, yes! Mr Robertson, you shall have him, you shall have him." This promise was not to be forgotten, and the man was saved.

Ensigns
Some of the Ensigns below may have been noted as such by one source, but in others as Lieutenants, so there might be double entries, above and below. |
Mackenzie, ---
"Muster" notes:
- SOURCE: Sir H. Munro
- Brother to Ardloch
Other notes:
- Likely this was John Mackenzie of Ardloch, listed below from other sources as an Ensign or Captain.
Mackenzie, Donald

"Prisoners" notes:
- PRISON CAREER: 17-Mar-1747 Edinburgh Castle; London
- ULTIMATE DISPOSAL: Transported
- NOTES AND AUTHORITIES: This is probably Donald MacKenzie, tenant of Invahanny, Inverness, who was a Captain under Cromarty. -- P.C., 78. He appears to have been sent to London, and was there in 1748. He was ultimately transported. - P.R., 3625-14.
Other notes:
- Noted as "M'Kenzie, Donald (Captain?)".
Mackenzie, George
"Muster" notes:
- SOURCE: Sir H. Munro
- Natural son to Gairloch
Not noted in "Prisoners".
Other notes:
- Presumably the "Gairloch" referred to was Sir Alexander Mackenzie, second Baronet of Gairloch. Sir Alex sat out the Rebellion, and seemed unsympathetic to the plight of the Earl of Cromarty in house arrest after. See cromartie.htm
- The MacKenzie family of Reiff in Coigach had as a foundation story that a son of the Laird of Gairloch fled to Coigach following the 1745 Rebellion, that son losing his claim to the estates to younger brothers. The story notes the Jacobite patriarch as Murdo, however genealogy suggests Murdo was born in the early 1740s.
- My guess is George was married to a daughter, Katherine, of Alexander MacKenzie of Corrie, and had at least two children before the Rebellion; Murdo, and a daughter unidentified yet by name, but whose descendants (myself) match DNA to descendants the Reiff MacKenzies, the Gairloch MacKenzies, and the Achiltibuie MacKenzies, in a quantity that suggests counting the generations back supports my supposition. If I am correct, George served as Ensign to his father-in-law Alexander, a Lieutenant.

OTHER LOCHBROOM JACOBITES
The prisoner lists are the largest source to identify Jacobites from Lochbroom, but by definition they exclude those of Cromarty's Regiment who died in battle, those who escaped capture, and those identified as supporting the Rebellion but not in the Regiment themselves. The following is an attempt to name them.
Mackenzie, Alexander
Not noted in "Muster".
Not noted in "Prisoners"
Other notes:
- Details in "Some Mackenzie Pedigrees" make clear this Alexander, an uncle of Mackenzie of Dundonnel, could not be mistaken for his nephew Alexander, above, as he was noted in a family entail of 1703, and that other Alexander as dieing in 1783. Also notes;
He took part not only in the Rising of 1715, but was in command of such men as joined the Rising of 1745, from his nephew's estate. Lord Macleod looked upon him as "a sensible old man."- History of the Mackenzies" notes "of whom nothing is known".
Mackenzie, Colin
Not noted in "Muster".
Not noted in "Prisoners"
Other notes:
- One of the three Mackenzies at Loggie on Little Lochbroom who "lifted" two thirds of the French gold being transported by Colonel John MacDonnell, "Spanish John", to aid the Prince and rebels, source credited in M.C.P. as a letter in "State Papers, Scotland, P.R.O.", that letter notes Colin as "alias Roy Brother to Dundonald". See also letters in Chapter Nine of "Companions of Pickle".
- At least two published sources mistake this Colin for the previous one, Colin, I of Badluachrach, who was arrested at Dunrobin and though later pardoned was in custody at time of the events at Loggie. One of those sources, "Children of Kildonan" by Sonia Mackenzie, 4th Edition 2006, names him as "Colin Dearg". "Roy" and "Dearg" both being Gaelic variations of the colour red.
- Findon Table, Sheet No. 11, note the uncle of Kenneth Mackenzie, III of Dundonnell as "Colin Rhiach of Ardinglash", and say he died before 1743. "History of the Mackenzies" notes him as "Colin Riabhach of Ardinglash".
Mackenzie, William
Not noted in "Muster"
Not noted in "Prisoners"
Other notes:
- This was the younger brother of Colin Mackenzie, sixth of Kilcoy, who is said to have brought out six of his tenants to join Cromartie. "History of the Mackenzies" says he married Jean, daughter of Alexander Mackenzie, VIII of Davochmaluag, without issue. See also notes with William Elder in this list.
- William was one of the three Mackenzies at Loggie on Little Lochbroom who "lifted" two thirds of the French gold being transported by Colonel John MacDonnell, "Spanish John", to aid the Prince and rebels, source credited in "More Culloden Papers as a letter in "State Papers, Scotland, P.R.O.".
HANOVERIANS
Most Lochbroom people were neutral in alegiance, however not all those committed were Jacobites. (note Rev James Robertson, Aulay MacAulay, reserve non Lochbroom Hanoverians for next category)
OTHERS
Many other Lochbroom people not clearly Jacobite or Hanoverian were caught up in the Rebellion, such as heritors with relatives in both camps, and the schoolteacher who testified at trials of rebels. Also here noted are people from beyond the Parish who passed through from all camps, from Capt. Fergusson of the British Marines punishing the Jacobite populance, to the French cadets and Privateers attempting to rescue Bonny Prince Charlie.
Col. MacKenzie
Spanish John
French Privateers
President Forbes
Captain Fergusson

Cumberland Papers
1745-1765:The Cumberland Papers are described at http://www.microform.co.uk/guides/ReligionPolitics.pdf as; The papers of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, third son of King George II which are preserved in the Royal Archives, are concerned mainly with his military career. His campaigns in the Low Countries, Scotland and Germany, and the war in North America of which, as Captain General of the Forces until 1757, he was in supreme control. There are also a few papers of much earlier date. They deal with such subjects as the establishment of forces at Minorca and Gibraltar in 1721, and General Wade's activities in Scotland, 1724-6. Papers captured from the Scots, during and after the Duke's campaign, include a journal of Prince Charles Edward's movements before, at and after Culloden, which forms a valuable supplement to the Stuart Papers.Sir H. Munro: list of Mackenzies-Loudoun Papers (09204) Presumably this source was Sir Harry Munro, Baronet, who was a commander in Loudon's Highlanders. The Loudon Papers are noted as "dispersed between Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Mount Stuart House on the Isle of Bute and the Huntington Library, San Marino, California".

History: History of the Mackenzies by Alexander Mackenzie was published 1894 collecting articles he had previously written for the Celtic Magazine he was Editor of. The Mormons have microfilmed the charts, see FHL 277813, however for filming they broke each chart into many different frames, making it difficult to browse and study.
