1747 IN ARMS List

INTRODUCTION

11 February 1747 a list was compiled by Evan Cameron, "school master and catechist upon the Royal Bounty" of "men on Cromartie's estate in Lochbroom Ross-shire and Cromarty-shire in the Barony of Coigach, indicating whether 'in arms' or not". The document is witnessed by John MacKenzie, Thomas Gair and Col [Colin] MacKenzie. 89 people are noted as being "IN ARMS" and 94 as not "IN ARMS"in the Rebellion.

A copy of the list is held in the Archives at Kew, see https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C15670268

The Catalogue description there notes it as "Copy of certificate listing men on Cromartie's estate in Lochbroom Ross-shire";

Reference: SP 36/94/1/77
Folios 77.

The following file is based on the information in the index there, the compiler was not familiar with Lochbroom placenames, and the transcribed spellings often did not follow modern versions. Also the list, as originally compiled, first included those known to have been in arms in the Rebellion, then those who were not. For this file, I give the modern placname, followed by the spelling transcribed by Kew if different, and for each placename note those who were "in arms", and those who were not. Any further notes by me are included in [square brackets]

Those noted as "IN ARMS" were most likely universally in Cromarty's Regiment, many are noted in sources such as "Muster Roll of the Jacobite Army", "Prisoners of the '45", etc.

First noted was Alexander MacKenzie, Cory, this was Cromarty's Coigach Factor, a Lieutenant in his Regiment, who though noted as "Cory" as his family had held that farm for half a dozen generations, was at time of the Rebellion resident at Achnahaird, In the list he is immediately followed by the Achnahaird Rebels. Alexander was captured, and transported into exile, making clear the list was not of people resident in 1747, but rather were resident during the Rebellion, an important distinction, as several families moved into Coigach to repopulate following the Rebellion. Though Alexander is noted as "Cory", I include him with the Achnahaird people.

There is an undated document, apparantly written 1746, in the National Archives of Scotland, indexed as NAS02023 E746/1/00191. It is a deposition from Murdoch MacLean, he states that Alexander MacKenzie of Corrie held Achnahaird in Tack for 11 or 12 years till April 1746 when he was arrested for participation in the Rebellion (so,... from about 1734 or '35). He states that Achnahaird had been laid waste following the Rebellion, except for the outskirts of the land, occupied by the following people;

the rent paid by the last two is indistinct, though a very similar list in the Mitford Manuscript (mitford.htm) says they paid six merks each.

My assumption is Murdoch MacLean was paying for two families, perhaps his own and a widowed mother with his younger siblings, or family of a brother who had been arrested as a Jacobite.

The first seven (at 5 Merks each) were likely Achnahaird, as other documents note the Tacksman later had his tenants from there moved to Altandhu, where by the early 19th century the surname "MacLean" predominated, as with this group (though the MacDonald family looks to have migrated to Reiff). The second group (at 8 Merks each) I take to be Reiff. The last two at 6 Merks each might have been the original inhabitants of Altandhu, before the Macleans migrated there, or less likely were at Faochag or Camuscoille.
