Death of John Mackenzie

This article was published in the 2 April 1830 edition of the The Inverness Journal.

On the 19th ult. John Mackenzie, son of Roderick Mackenzie, farmer, Achnahaird, was drowned in Lochbroom. The young man had been sailing in a small boat with another person, when a sudden squall overturned the boat. Mackenzie's companion caught hold of one of the oars, and by this means saved his life. The body was found two days thereafter and decently interred.

John's father Roderick was Tacksman of Achnahaird, his MacKenzie family held the tack there (were principal tenants) from at least 1740 to 1851.

Not certain, but I think it likely he was the John MacKenzie who married 26 March 1817 to Anne McLeod, both resident at Achnahaird.

The 1826 militia list shows him as resident at Inverpolly, in 1827 at Achnahaird, both as under 30 years of age. Both places were tacks of his father.

I have been constructing a file on the MacKenzie tacksmen of Achnahaird, it is at corrie.htm
