Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 9 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

Cannot see this family in 1851, but in 1841 they were at Dornie 41-6. In the 1871 census they are at Reiff 71-75.

William McLeod married 1 March, 1832 to Ann McDonald.

Anne was christened 29 July, 1812 at Dornie as "a Bastard Daughter" to William MacDonald there, her death registration in 1894 gives her mother's name as Mary McLeod. Ann's father, "Big William", married Johanna MacKenzie at Dornie (a daughter of the sixth Laird of Ballone), and later emigrated to Canada, where he has many descendants today, see the notes at; Big William.

Roderick above is listed as a fisherman when he dies single 18 April, 1867 aged 27 years.

William's mother Christina McLeod died 3 May, 1862 at Reiff aged 78. Her death registration lists her parents as Roderick McLeod and Isabella McKenzie. It lists her marital status as "single (illegitamate)", and the Informant was her grandson Kenneth.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 9 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach, except Isabella McLeod born in Assynt, Sutherland Shire.

Cannot see this family in other censuses, however, Christina marries 22 February, 1872 in Assynt Parish to Donald MacLean, a son of Alexander McLean at Altandhu 61-14, and they are in the 1881 census with five children at Altandhu 81-43. Donald takes over his father's croft when he dies sometime between 1871 and 1881.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 9 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-97, in 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-40.

Duncan's death is registered 1875 at Altandhu aged 72 years, his parents noted as having been Kenneth MacLean and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacLeod, Informant his son Kenneth.

Mary was the second wife of Duncan, they married shortly after the 1841 census, her death registration in 1887 says her parents had been John MacLeod and Anne, Maiden Surname MacLeod. Duncan's first wife Catherine MacKenzie from Reiff died before the 1841 census, Catherine above was probably named to honour the first wife.

Three christenings to Duncan McLean are in the OPR, the first two would be with his first wife, Catherine MacKenzie, and the third with Mary;

There is a memorial stone for this family in the Badenscallie burial grounds, photographed and transcribed by Roddie Macpherson, see http://www.rosscromartyroots.co.uk/picture/number544.asp

That stone paid for by John in New Zealand, probably in 1869, Roddie transcribes;

"his brother/RODERICK MACLEOD McLEAN/who died at his father's residence/on the 6th of Sept 1869/aged 29 years/and of his sister/CATHERINE AN McLEAN/who died 9th Sept 1869/aged 20 years/also KENNETH McLEAN Altandow/who died 25th Sept 1918 aged 76/and his wife/MARGARET MACLEOD/died 4 Aug 1909/aged 56 years."

The 1877 death registration of Anne Kerr who is in this census at Reiff 61-8 notes the same parents as Mary.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on pages 9 and 10 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach, except Flora McLean born in Sutherland Shire, P.N.K. (Parish not known)

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-95, in 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-38.

John's death is registered as 1878 at Altandhu, aged 71 years, married to Flora McBeth, his parents noted as having been Kenneth McLean "Wright and Crofter", and Isabella, Maiden Surname McLeod.

The IGI lists the christening of Christina as 29 May, 1855, with her mother as "Flora McBeath". The 1851 census lists Flora as born at Farr, Sutherland.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-106, with Ann's then living husband Alexander as Head of Household. In 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-39.

The Parish Register records the marriage 8 January, 1817 of Alexander MacLean of Aultandu to Ann MacKenzie, Isle Ruistail, (usually spelt "Ristol"). Also in the Register is the christening 17 November, 1819 of William to father Alexander.

Ann dies 13 October, 1878 aged 95, her parents listed as Alexander McKenzie and Mary Ross, with her son Kenneth as Informant. Her brother Neil died shortly before this census, his widow and other relatives are at Polbain 61-5.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach, though the 1881 census at Altandhu 81-32 says Mary was born at Glenshiel, Ross and Cromarty.

In the 1851 census Catherine with a son Kenneth and nephew John was at Altandhu 51-94, in 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-41.

Murdo dies 1884 at Altandhu, the death registration notes Mary's Maiden Surname was MacRae, and Murdo's parents had been Roderick MacLeod and Catherine, Maiden Surname MacLeod. Based on the 1818 marriage record I think the Maiden Surname for Catherine, "Ketty" above, was "MacLean", not "MacLeod".

The birth of Roderick ("Rory" in some censuses) was registered 14 April, 1858 at Glenshiel to parents Murdo McLeod and Mary MacRae.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District # 2. Mary is marked as born in Assynt, Sutherland Shire. In the 1871 census I think she is at Altandhu 71-49, though the birth place then is noted as "Ross Shire".

Mary was in the 1851 census at Achnahaird 51-57 with her husband Roderick and three children, before that in 1841 they were at Badentarbat. Roderick died six years before this census, 19 March, 1855 aged 70, noted as having lived 60 years in Coigach. His death registration listed his birthplace as Stornoway, and his parents as Kenneth McLean and Catherine Smith. Interesting that he was buried on Tanera, I can see no connection to families there. Informant of his death was his Widow, Mary.

Mary's own death is registered as 23 September, 1879 at Altandhu aged about 80 years, her parents having been Roderick McKenzie, a crofter, and his wife Ellen McLeod, the Informant John McLean is noted as "son of the sister of deceased's husband".

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census Murdoch was at Altandhu 51-101, with his sister Ann (also above), two young MacLeods (probably a nephew and neice), and a 24 year old unmarried Isabella MacKenzie, the birth registrations of the children above shows Isabella above was maiden surname MacKenzie, likely the 1851 Isabella.

In 1871 this family is at Altandhu 71-42.

Flora Bastin and her brother Dr.Neil MacLeod (CONTACT INFO) are descended from a brother of Murdoch, she notes three siblings emigrated to Australia;

Birth of young Henny above was registered 1 February, 1861, there was an earlier Henny, whose birth was registered as 27 January, 1860, and death 20 April, 1860 as a one day old (likely her death happened in January but only registered in April).

Isabella dies 6 April, 1869 at Altandhu, age 39 years, she suffered her last seven years from consumption. She came from a family at Polglass, her parents noted as Norman McKenzie and Catherine, maiden surname McLeod. Those parents and three of her siblings are in this census at Polglass 61-17.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

Though enumerated as "McLeod"s, it looks certain from earlier and later censuses these were McLeans, I think there was a transcription error at some point!

Alexander was unmarried in the last census at Altandhu 51-99, his father John was then Head of the Household which included John's then living wife Ann MacKenzie (one of the large Reiff MacKenzie family), and Alexander's brother Kenneth with wife Chirsty and son. Kenneth with his family is in this census at Altandhu 61-13.

This family is in the 1871 census at Altandhu 71-43.

John, the Widowed father, has death registered as 4 May, 1862 aged 88 years at Altandhu, Widower of Ann MacLean. The registration notes his parents had been John McLean and Ann, Maiden Surname Graham, Informant his son Alexander.

Alexander married in 1854 to Flora MacKenzie, Flora's parents and siblings are in this census at Altandhu 61-25.

John McLean in the next Household, Altandhu 61-10, is a brother of Alexander (another son of John above). Kenneth McLean at Altandhu 61-13 and Murdo McLean at Altandhu 61-22 are also brothers.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on pages 10 and 11 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach, except Kenneth Stewart born in Ullapool

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-105, in 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-44.

Birth registration of children to this couple after 1855 list Ann's maiden surname as also "McLean", and the IGI records the marriage 24 December, 1846 of John McLean to Ann McLean. Cannot pick Ann out in the 1841 census though!

Young Alexander has birth registered as 15 February, 1857.

John's father, also named John, and his brother Alexander are in the previous Household, Altandhu 61-9, mistakedly enumerated as "McLeods". Kenneth McLean at Altandhu 61-13 and Murdo McLean at Altandhu 61-22 are also brothers.

Altandhu 61-11

Martha McLeod Head Un 62 Domestic Servt.
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 11 of Enumeration District # 2. Martha was marked as born in Inverness Shire, P.N.K. (Parish not known)

Not certain, but I think she was the 45 year old "Marcela Macleod" in the 1851 census at Dornie 115.

Hugh Do Brother Un 25 Ag Lab
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 11 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this Catherine and Hugh were at Altandhu 51-109, in 1871 Kenneth and Janet with four children are at Altandhu 71-45.

Catherine's death is registered as 22 March, 1866 at Altandhu aged 66 years, noted as Widow of John MacLean, Carpenter. The registration notes her parents had been Kenneth McLean, Carpenter, and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacLeod, Informant her son John.

The I.G.I. records the marriage 28 December, 1854 of Kenneth McLean to Janet McLeod, and the birth registration of young Christina in the Civil Registration index 4 November, 1856 confirms that Janet's maiden surname was McLeod. There is a matching age Janet McLeod in 1851 at Badenscallie 51-40, her father named Angus.

In this census Janet's parents are at Badenscallie 61-2, with them there is a two year old son of Kenneth and Janet named Roderick. The civil registration index shows Kenneth and Janet had a son John born a few months after this census, 21 June, 1861. My guess is young Roderick was to sent to stay with his grandparents to relieve pressure on his parents during the pregnancy.

Four of the people above are noted on a memorial stone at Badenscallie burial ground, erected by a nephew of Kenneth, Roderick MacLean, after Kenneth's name it has "Boy" in brackets, implying he was blonde or yellowish hair, "buidh" being Gaelic for the colour "yellow". It notes Kenneth died November, 1899 aged 72, and wife Janet maiden surnamed MacLeod died 9 October, 1893 aged 63 years. Also on the stone are Hugh MacLean died March 1900 at Achnahaird aged 72, and Donald MacLean died March 1907 aged 77.

The death registration of Donald as 25 March, 1907 as well as confirming parents notes his occupation as "Hotel-Keeper", Widower of Mary, Maiden Surname not known to the Informant, his nephew John McLean.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 11 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-99 in the home of Kenneth's parents, in 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-46.

The Parish Register records the marriage 9 January, 1850 of Kenneth McLean of Altandubh to Christian Stewart resident of Polglass, a daughter of Duncan Stewart of Polglass. Chirsty was with her family in the 1841 census at Achiltibuie 41-12 (all the Polglass familys were enumerated as part of Achiltibuie that year). In this census her Widowed mother and several other relatives are at Polglass 61-14, and Alexander Stewart at Polglass 61-15 is a brother.

Kenneth's father and brother are at Altandhu 61-9, mistakedly enumerated as a "McLeod". John McLean at Altandhu 61-10, and Murdo McLean at Altandhu 61-22 are also brothers.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 11 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-110, Alexander was a Widower with five children then, including the older two above. In 1871 the family is nearby at Ristol 71-85, Alexander then Widowed again, though death of Isabella has not been found in the Civil Registrations.

Cannot see Isabella in the 1851 census, but in 1841 she was with her family at Altandhu 41-12. She married Alexander shortly after the last census, 3 July, 1851.

Alexander's death is registered as 14 January, 1876 at Altandhu, Widowed, aged 76 years, his son Donald as Informant. The Registration says his parents had been Donald MacLean, Carpenter, and Chirsty, Maiden Surnamed MacLean.

Alexander and Isabella, through their daughter Mary above, were gt-gt-grandparents of Simon Gunn in Scotland (CONTACTS INFO).

Mary was born 1853 and died 1920. She marries 10 October, 1883 at Clachnaharry, Inverness to John Douglass Gunn, who was Schoolmaster at Altandhu in the 1881 census, see Altandhu 81-48. Mary and John Douglass Gunn had two children at Altandhu, including Simon's grandfather, before moving on in 1887 to Dunan Skye, where they had three more.

A son of Alexander and his first wife, Donald, marries 22 February, 1872 at Assynt to Christina McLeod, who is in this census as an 8 year old at Altandhu 61-2, they are in the 1881 census with six children at Altandhu 81-43, Donald assumed his father's croft after his death in 1878.

Alexander has two sisters in this census; Catherine at Reiff 61-4 has death registration noting her parents had been Donald McLean, Boat Carpenter, and Christina, Maiden Surname McLean. Annabella McLeod at Reiff 61-18 has parents noted as having been Donald McLean, Carpenter, and Chirsty, Maiden Surname McLean.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 12 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-100. In 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-47, both Murdoch and Anabella still alive, and young Murdoch married to Mary MacLean with two children.

Murdo's death is registered 1877 at Old Dornie, age 94 years, a Widower, the registration says his parents had been John McLean and Rachel, Maiden Surname McLean.

Murdoch was listed in the christening of one of his children in 1830, and in the 1851 census, with occupation as "Miller".

The OPR records the marriage 25 March, 1818 of Murdo MacLean Aultandu to Anabile MacLean Tanary (clearly the Isle Tanera). Though Anabella is recorded as resident on Tanera at time of her wedding, she is also recorded in the 1851 census as born in the parish of Lochs, Isle of Lewis, Ross Shire. Annabella's death was registered as 20 February, 1873 at Altandhu, her son John as Informant. Her parents were noted as Kenneth MacLean and Kitt, Maiden Surname Smith.

The IGI records the marriage 7 March, 1867 of Murdoch MacLean at Ullapool to Mary McLean, with his parents as Murdoch MacLean and Anabella MacLean. Also registered as born to Murdoch McLean and Mary McLean are;

A son of Murdo and Annabella, Donald, married 26 January, 1860 at Ullapool to Annie MacLeod, a daughter of John MacLeod and Isabella MacLennan of Reiff, Annie was in the 1851 census at Reiff 51-91. They are in this census at Reiff 61-2 with a daughter, and two of Annie's sisters.

Mary MacLeod in the next Household, Altandhu 61-16, and Catherine Macleod at Altandhu 61-22 are daughters of Murdoch and Anabella, Duncan McLean at Altandhu 61-17 and Kenneth McLean at Polbain 61-3 are sons.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 12 of Enumeration District # 2. Both are marked as born at Coigach.

Murdoch McLeod was in the 1851 census with his family at Reiff 51-85, his parents and four of his siblings are in this census at Reiff 61-18, and his sister Rachel is married to Donald McLeay, in this census at Letters, see 61rachel.

Mary was in the 1851 census as a servant to her sister Catherine at Altandhu 51-103.

Murdoch MacLeod married 29 December, 1859 to Mary MacLean. Cannot see this Murdo and Mary in later censuses at Altandhu or Reiff, and the I.G.I. records only one birth to the couple, Murdoch 5 March, 1862. My guess is they emigrated soon after.

It is interesting that Murdoch's parents were Murdoch MacLeod and Anabella MacLean, and Mary's parents were Murdoch MacLean and Anabella MacLean!

Mary's parents are in the previous Household, Altandhu 61-15. Mary's brother Duncan is in the next Household at Altandhu 61-17, and her brother Donald is at Reiff 61-2 with a daughter, and two of his wife's sisters.

In the 1851 census this family, with Christina's now missing husband Murdoch MacLean as Head of Household, was at Altandhu 51-98, Murdoch's mother, Margaret MacKenzie (one of the large Reiff MacKenzie family) was still alive then, her death was registered in 1855. In 1871 the family is at Altandhu 71-51.

John marries 21 June, 1870 for the first time to his second cousin, Margaret "Peggy" MacKenzie who is in this census with her family at Reiff 61-26. She was his second cousin through the well researched Reiff MacKenzie family.

Catherine and Ann McLean at Altandhu 61-20 and Isabella MacLeod at Polbain 61-21 are sisters of the missing Murdoch.

Informant on the reg was her nephew Kenneth McKenzie, clearly the Kenneth in this census at Altandhu 61-25, as his mother (Christina's sister) is named Rachel as well.

In the 1851 census with Christina was an unmarried niece, Joanna McLean, daughter of John McLean and Catherine, Maiden Surname McLean, she is in this census at Reiff 61-4.

Ann was in the 1851 census at Altandhu 51-98, in the home of her brother Murdoch. Murdoch is missing in this census, but his wife and children are at Altandhu 61-18.

Ann dies 2 February, 1876, her brother Murdoch was Informant on her Death Registration. Their parents had been John MacLean and Margaret, Maiden Surname MacKenzie. Catherine, Ann, Murdoch, and their sister Isabella MacLeod at Polbain 61-21 are children of John McLean and Margaret McKenzie (one of the large Reiff MacKenzie family).

John was an orphan in the 1851 census at the home of his maternal grandfather, Murdoch MacLeod, at Altandhu 51-107. His father, a brother of Catherine and Ann above, died before the 1841 census, but John was then with his Widowed mother Mary at Altandhu 41-7.

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-103, in 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-53.

Murdo's father and brother are at Altandhu 61-9, mistakedly enumerated as "McLeod"s. John McLean at Altandhu 61-10, and Kenneth McLean at Altandhu 61-13 are also brothers.

Catherine's death is registered 1893 at Altandhu, aged 79 years, Widow of Murdo McLean, the registration notes her parents had been John McLennan, Blacksmith, and Isabella, Maiden Surname McKenzie.

A daughter of this family, Mary, has death registered as 19 May, 1857 at Altandhu aged one year, the registration confirms Catherine's Maiden Surname as MacLennan.

Catherine through her mother Isabella was a grandchild of Murdoch McKenzie and Mary McLean of Reiff, over 1,300 descendants of that couple have been traced by various genealogists!

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 13 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach, except Ann McLean born in Assynt, Sutherland Shire (all other censuses seem to indicate Ann was from Altandhu).

In the 1851 census Ann's husband John MacKenzie was Head of Household at Altandhu 51-93 with three unmarried children. In 1871 Ann is with her son Roderick's family at Altandhu 71-54.

Ann dies 9 January, 1879 at Tanera, possibly a daughter was married and living there, though Informant of the death was her son Roderick, resident at Altandhu. The Death Registration notes her parents had been John MacLean and Mary, maiden surname MacLeod. It also notes her husband had been John MacKenzie, Weaver.

A daughter of Ann, Johanna or Hannah, is in this census at Reiff 61-4. There is a death registered 19 November, 1860 of a 3&1/4 year old child Margaret McLean at Altandow, to parents Kenneth McLean, Shepherd, deceased, and Johanna McLean, M.S. McKenzie, Informant was Margaret's uncle Roderick McKenzie, Hannah's brother. My guess is the two grandchildren above are daughters of Hannah.

Donald McKenzie in the next Household, Altandhu 61-25, is a son of Ann.

A daughter of Ann's late husband through his first wife, Isabella, married 1855 to William McLean on Isle Tanera, then tragically died only a few years later, 1860, in childbirth. Kenneth and a daughter Johannah are in this census at Tanera 61-11.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 13 of Enumeration District # 2. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Altandhu 51-96, in 1871 they are at Altandhu 71-55.

Since the 1851 census Donald's father John MacKenzie has died, his Widowed mother Ann McLean and two nieces are in this census in the previous Household at Altandhu 61-24.

Donald's death is registered as 1 April, 1862 at Altandhu aged 53 years, married to Rachel MacLean, parents having been John MacKenzie, Weaver, and Flora, Maiden Surname MacLeod, Informant his son Angus.

Rachel dies 1887 at Altandhu as "Ronalda", her parents noted in the Death Registration as having been John MacLean, a Miller, and "Ronalda", Maiden Surname MacLean.

Angus marries 1 February, 1867 at Bankhead, Pultneytown, Wick, age 26, occupation fisherman, to Catherine McLean, 20 year old daughter of Murdoch MacLean and Jane maiden surname Sutherland at Latherton, Caithness, (I wonder if Murdoch MacLean might also be a descendant from Altandhu?). See notes regarding the family at http://boards.ancestry.ca/localities.britisles.scotland.cai.general/410/mb.ashx

A daughter of this family, Flora, married in 1854 to Alexander MacLean, they are in this census at Altandhu 61-9, mistakedly enumerated as "McLeod"s!

Another daughter, Catherine or "Ketty", marries a James Stewart, three of their children are in the 1871 census with Rachel.

A sister of Rachel, Christina, is in this census at Altandhu 61-19, she dies at Altandhu 24 April, 1868 age listed as 79 years. The death registration confirms her and Rachel's parents as having been John McLean and Rachel maiden surnamed McLean. Informant on the registration was her nephew Kenneth McKenzie, above.
