Polbain or "The white pool" is on the shore across from the largest of the Summer Isles, Tanera Mor. Andrew Moir today lives at Polbain, and his webpage includes photos! (CONTACT INFO)
As well as the families below, there were christenings at Polbain;
The Dundee Courier, 30 April, 1883, notes marriage;

Daughter Mary is in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-4, married to Murdoch MacLeod.
I think this family was originaly from Badentarbet. The Parish Register records the christening 16 November, 1828 at Badentarbet of a son Hector to a father Murdoch McLeod, Hector was with them in the 1841 census. Memorial stone for son Angus suggests the father of Murdoch above was another Hector.
Memorial stone for the death of young Angus in 1875 notes him as "Mac mhurcaidh mhic eachainn", which translates as "son of Murdoch, who was son of Hector", indicating the father of Murdoch above was a Hector.

All were born in Ross and Cromarty. Murdoch listed as a Chelsea Pensioner. In the 1851 Census at Polbain 51-26 Murdoch is listed as "Pensioner (Army of 42 Highlanders.)"
Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto is descended from Murdoch through Chirsty above. Allana has had the records searched at Kew to find Murdoch MacLeod's discharge papers, she says they are fascinating, and even include his physical description!
Although this census lists Murdoch as born in the County of Ross and Cromarty, the 1851 census has him born at Assynt in Sutherlandshire, and his discharge papers say he was born at Dornoch in Sutherlandshire!
Murdoch died 4 October, 1856 at Polbain (reg#56). He was listed as a 76 year old Widower and Pensioner. He suffered from Asthma his last ten years. His parents were listed in his death registration as Donald McLeod, Tenant (Deceased), and Ann McLeod, Maiden name Macleod (Deceased). The Informant was listed as; Murdoch Macleod Son (Present) [signed]
Daughters Elizabeth and Christina ("Chirsty" above) married brothers and lived all their lives in Polbain. Christina is Allana's gt-gt-grandmother. Allana says Christina married in 1844 at Dorney to Roderick MacLeod, who was a tailor three Households away in this census at Polbain 41-6. Cannot see the families of Christina or Elizabeth in the 1851 census, but by 1861 Christina is Widowed with children at Polbain 61-1, and Elizabeth with her family is in the next Household at Polbain 61-2.
Murdoch's daughter Hughina was christened at Badenscally 8 February 1830, she married 28 December, 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu (see Altandhu 51-104). Hughina and Murdoch MacLean emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. A cousin of Allana named Ngaire Moffitt there has sent a copy of Hughina's death registration, as she died in New Zealand. The death registration gives her mother's maiden name as Kerr, so possibly Murdoch was married twice...
Another cousin of Allana in New Zealand is Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO), Marg's grandmother Isabella though born in N.Z. was a daughter of Hughina who married John McDonald, an emigrant from Reiff!, see Reiff 61-23.

The Parish Register includes the marriage of Hector McKenzie of Isle Ristol to Janet McDonald from Reiff 12 March, 1830. Janet's family is in this census at Reiff 41-18. The Reiff McDonalds include some of my own ancestors, so I would welcome any input on Hector and Janet's family; CONTACT INFO.
This family moves to Balintore in Easter Ross sometime after birth of a fifth child in 1844, and before the 1851 census, the connection to the Reiff MacDonald family reinforced there as a grandson of Janet is noted in the 1871 census as "Herd Boy" to the family of her niece Christina at Arboll. Descendants of the family are traced to the present day.
Janet dies 19 October, 1885 at Balintore, Fearn age listed as 84, Hector's death is registered as 23 January, 1890 at Balintore aged 86, son of Roderick McKenzie and Margaret maiden surname McKenzie, the 1881 census has him born at Lochinver, Assynt, which corresponds to the OPR index of a christening there 31 July, 1803.

Notes on this Household:

Cannot see Roderick in the 1851 census, but in 1861 his Widow and children are at Polbain 61-1.
Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto is descended from Roderick. She says the birth registration of Roderick's son in 1855 states he married in 1844 at Dorney to Christina "Chirsty" McLeod, who is in this census at Polbain 41-3.
Catharine above was a sister of Roderick, another brother of these two married Elizabeth McLeod, sister of Roderick's wife Chirsty! Allana says both families lived all their lifes at Polbain.
Allana has not been able to find anything out about Roderick other than this listing in the 1841 Census, and that his death registration 23 April, 1860 gives cause of death as Consumption (T.B.) and lists his parents as having been Neil MacLeod and Catherine MacLeod (maiden name MacLeod). Allana has seen a Neil MacLeod listed in the O.P.R.'s who lived at Reiff and wonders if this was Roderick's father.

John and Isabella were ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their son Murdo (away from home this census) and his wife Isabella Campbell, who is in this census at Acheninver 41-3.
John and Isabella were also ancestors of Morag Kane through their son Alexander, who in 1877 marries his second cousin, Christina "Christy" McKenzie of Isle Tanera.
Isabella has two other siblings in this census; Duncan McKenzie in Reiff 41-5, and Janet Ross in Reiff 41-9. Another sibling, John McKenzie, emigrated in 1848 with his wife and three children to Australia, they were ancestors of the late Barbara Kolle of Melbourne, Australia.

John's death is registered 1880 at Polbain, Isabella "Bell" still alive then shown to have maiden surname McLean, his parents noted as having been Alexander McLeod and Mary, maiden surname McLean. Informant his son Kenneth.
The death of Isabella is registered in 1890 at Polbain aged 77 years, Widow of John MacLeod, her parents noted as having been John MacLean and Maggie, maiden surname MacKenzie, Informant her son Kenneth. The parents names and her age show her to be a daughter of a family at Altandhu, her mother Margaret one of the large MacKenzie of Reiff family, that Margaret died 1855, Registrations that year include childrens names and ages which confirms Isabella as a daughter. Isabella's parents with other relatives are in this census at Altandhu 41-17.

All were born in Ross and Cromarty. No surname or ditto written for Murdoch, but I assume him to be a child of this family. Mary's age was written in the "Male" column, and the enumeration counted her that way, clearly a transcription error I think!
In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-44.
The Parish Register has the marriage 22 December, 1813 of Finlay Shaw Tanary, and Eric McLennan there.
Young Ann is a daughter of Roderick and Mary, she shows up in the 1851 census as a servant to the MacLeod family at Polbain 51-38. Interesting that the civil registration of three of Roderick and Mary's children list Mary's maiden surname also as Shaw! I am uncertain which of Roderick or Mary is the daughter of Finlay and Henny.
Roderick is missing in the 1851 census, but Mary along with three children, is at Polbain 51-43.
Sometime before the 1851 census a daughter of Finlay and Henny, Sarah, marries Kenneth MacLean from Altandhu, they are then with her parents, and a nine month old son, Kenneth is in this census with his family at Altandhu 41-9.
Cannot see the younger Roderick in the 1851 census, but in 1861 he is at Polbain 61-22, married with six children. Similarly, Murdoch is missing in 1851, but in 1861 is married with three sons at Polbain 61-24.

This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom, except Murdoch born at Assynt in SutherlandShire.
In the 1841 Census this family was at Polbain 41-3.
Murdoch is a gt-gt-gt-grandfather of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto through his daughter Christina "Chirsty", who is not present in this census. Allana has done much research on this family and provided most of the following details.
The 1841 census lists Murdoch as born in the County of Ross and Cromarty, this census has him born at Assynt in Sutherlandshire, and his discharge papers say he was born at Dornoch in Sutherlandshire!
The Informant was listed as "Murdoch Macleod Son (Present) [signed]"
Chirsty married in 1844 to Roderick MacLeod, who was a tailor 26 years older than her, his place of residence listed as Dorney though in the 1841 census he was at Polbain 41-6 with his sister Catharine. Allana has not been able to find anything further about Roderick yet. In 1861 Chirsty is Widowed with four sons at Polbain 61-1.
Allana says Chirsty's sister Elizabeth (not present in this census) married John McLeod, brother of Chirsty's husband Roderick! Elizabeth with family is in the 1861 census next to Chirsty at Polbain 61-2.
Another daughter of Murdoch, Hughina, married 28 December, 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu (see Altandhu 51-104). Hughina and Murdoch MacLean emigrate to New Zealand in 1858. A cousin of Allana named Ngaire Moffitt there has sent a copy of Hughina's death registration, as she died in New Zealand. The death registration gives her mother's maiden name as Kerr. Hughina's descendants in N.Z. also include my cousin Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).
Margaret, "Peggy" above, marries 21 January, 1856 at Ullapool to Murdoch Shaw also from Polbain (son of Finlay Shaw and Eric, maiden surname MacLennan). Cannot see Murdoch n this census, but his family is at Polbain 51-44. In 1861 Peggy and Murdoch are at Polbain 61-24.
26 March, 1857 young Donald marries Catherine McLeod. They are in the 1861 census in the neighbouring community at Dornie 61-3. With them and two young children there are Donald's then still unmarried brother Murdoch (young Murdo above, Informant of their father's death), and a 25 year old niece Margaret, most likely the 15 year old servant above.

The death is registered 1876 at Polbain of John, the registration notes parents were John MacDonald, letter carrier, and Jessie, maiden surname Campbell.
The O.P.R. includes mention of marriage 21 February, 1820 of John McDonald Tanaray to Janet Campbell Dornie. I am sure that refers to this family, as by time of the 1871 census Janet is at Polbain 71-14, with the next household (on the same lot perhaps?) containing only an unmarried woman, named Margaret Campbell.
The Parish Register includes christenings of two of the children above, both with father's residence as "Badentarbet";
The next Household, Polbain 51-31, has only an unmarried George Campbell, born at Gairloch like Jessy above, I suspect they were brother and sister. The 1864 Death registration of George says their parents had been John Campbell and Christina, Maiden Surname Kerr.

Three of the children above who should have shown up in the 1841 census, Murdo, Hector, and Catherine were not with their parents, my guess is though the ages do not quite match they were the three children of those names in the 1841 census at Faochag; Hector at Faochag 41-21, a MacKenzie family with relationship not known, and Murdo and Catherine with Isabella's parents in the next Household at Faochag 41-22. Isabella's mother has died since the last census, but her father Roderick is with her brother Hugh's Household at Faochag 41-65.
In 1861 this family is at Polbain 61-16.
John and Isabella were ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their son Murdo and his wife Isabella Campbell, who is in this census at Acheninver 51-13.
John and Isabella were also ancestors of Morag Kane through their son Alexander, who in 1877 marries his second cousin, Christina "Christy" McKenzie of Isle Tanera, born soon after this census, they are the ancestors of Morag Kane.
Isabella has siblings Duncan McKenzie at Reiff 51-71, and Janet McKenzie (Widow of Hugh Ross) at Reiff 51-80, another sibling, John McKenzie, emigrated in 1848 with his wife and three children, they were ancestors of the late Barbara Kolle of Melbourne.

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom.
In the 1841 census this family was at Polbain 41-11. Though the ages do not match, naming and birth orders suggest this is the family in the 1861 census at Dornie 61-4.
The Parish Register records the marriage 7 March, 1820 of "John MacLeod Tanaray" to "Anne Urquhart Ruiff".
John's death is registered as 1873 at Dornie, aged 75 years, married to Ann Urquhart, The registration notes his parents had been Roderick MacLeod and Margaret, Maiden Surname MacLeod. That couple were in the 1841 census at Tanera 41-1.

Norman's death is registered 1878 at Isle Ristol, aged "73". The Registration says Mary was Maiden Surname MacLeod, and says Norman's parents had been Donald MacLeod and Esabella MacLeod.
The death of an unmarried daughter of Norman and Mary, also named Mary, was registered as 14 October, 1869 at Isle Ristol, it states her mother's Maiden Surname as MacLeod. The Parish Register includes the marriage 29 February, 1828 of "Norman McLeod Altandow to Mary McMcLeod There".

Notes on this Household:
This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom. Handwriting of parents ages is indistinct, though I think my transcription correct.
In the 1841 census this family was at Polbain 41-14, that census says Murdoch was not born in the County, and when they appear in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-19, with Abie is marked as born at Assynt!
Roderick's death is registered as unmarried 1866 at Polbain aged 32 years. The registration notes his parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.
Catherine has death registered 1868 at Polbain, aged 26 years, unmarried, parents Murdoch and Abigail both then deceased. Informant of the death was her aunt, Christina McLeod, likely that is the Chirsty in the neighbouring Household, Polbain 51-41, but it is not certain if Chirsty was sister of Murdoch or of Abigail.
A daughter of this family, Anne, has death registered as 1866 at Polbain, aged 29 years. The registration notes her parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.

Notes on this Household:
This Household is on page 11 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom. Handwriting of the age of Murdoch is indistinct and might read as "10", but his age corresponds with a 9 year old son in the 1841 census and a 27 year old year old in 1861...
In the 1841 census this family was at Polbain 41-17, in 1861 they are at Polbain 61-21.
Margaret is in this census with other relatives of Isabella at Altandhu 51-98.
A daughter of this family, Ann, is in this census at Reiff 51-72 as a cattle herd, it is not clear the relationship if any of that MacLeod family to this.

In the 1861 census this family is at Polbain 61-25, one of six Shaw Households in Polbain that year!
According to the civil registrations of three of their children born after 1855 Mary's maiden surname was also Shaw! Finlay and Henny Shaw in the next Household, Polbain 51-44, are parents of either Roderick or Mary.

Kenneth was from Altandhu, he was in the 1841 census with his family (his mother Maiden Surname was also MacLean) at Altandhu 41-9, his family is in this census at Altandhu 51-100 with a four year old son of his, John.
The Parish Register has the marriage 22 December, 1813 of Finlay Shaw Tanary, and Eric McLennan there ("Eric", "Henny", "Euphemia", and "Henrietta" were all variations of the same name).
In the previous Household at Polbain 51-43 either Mary, Or her now missing husband Roderick, is a child of Finlay and Henny above; they were both with them in the 1841 census, and both were surnamed Shaw!

Notes on this Household:
This Household is on page 1 of Enumeration District #1. All marked as born in Coigach.
Cannot find this family in the 1851 census, though Christina "Chirsty" was in 1841 with her family at Polbain 41-3, and her husband-to-be, Roderick, was then with a sister at Polbain 41-6.
In 1871 Christina with two sons is at Polbain 71-9.
Christina was a gt-grandmother of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) through her son Murdoch above. Allana has provided lots of info on this family!
Roderick's death was registered as 23 April, 1860, cause of death as Consumption (T.B.) and lists his parents as having been Neil MacLeod and Catherine MacLeod (maiden name MacLeod). Allana has seen a Neil MacLeod listed in the O.P.R.'s who lived at Reiff and wonders if this was Roderick's father. I think it more likely the father was the "Nial Macleod" listed in the 1798 Militia List as living at Badentarbat.
Civil Registration of the birth of Neil 14 May, 1855 shows his father was Roderick McLeod, and his mother Christina's maiden surname was also McLeod, that registration says they were married 1844 at Dorney, and that Roderick who was 26 years older than Christina was a Tailor.
Young Donald dies 15 March, 1869, his occupation like his father had been noted as Tailor. The death registration confirms Christina was Maiden Surname MacLeod.
I suspect Murdoch McIver angered the enumerator, the word "Idiotic" has been circled three times!
Christina's sister Hughina married 28 December, 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu and emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. Hughina's descendants in N.Z. include my cousin Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).
Eliza McLeod in the next Household, Polbain 61-2, is a sister of Christina, and Eliza'a husband John was a brother of Christina's husband Roderick!

In 1851 John with his sisters Ann and Anabella, and a niece Ann Campbell, was at Polbain 51-24. Cannot see Elisabeth then, but in 1841 she was with her family at Polbain 41-3.
In 1871 John and Elisabeth with six children are at Polbain 71-10, with John's sisters Ann and Annabella in the next Household at Polbain 71-11. Probably the two Households were on the same croft.
Civil Registration shows John McLeod married Elisebeth McLeod 19 March, 1857. Also recorded is the birth of Catherine 22 December, 1859 and a son Neil, 12 August, 1859. I think that Neil died young, and the Nephew Neil above was born 22 August, 1859 to Donald McLeod and Jane McLeod, not certain but likely that George was also a son of that couple.
The Widow Christina McLeod in the previous Household, Polbain 61-1, was married to Roderick McLeod, a brother of Elisabeth's husband John! Christina was an ancestor of Allana MacLean of Toronto (CONTACT INFO), who has contributed much of the info on this family.

This family is in the 1871 census at Polbain 71-7. Based on the data that follows I think the age of Sibella is mistranscribed, that it should be "1" rather than "7".
The death of one and a quarter year old Angus is registered as 10 April, 1863 at Polbain, with parents Murdoch MacLeod and Mary, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

Abigail, "Abie" above, dies 28 September, 1862 at Polbain aged 55 years, Informant her husband Murdoch. The registration notes her parents had been Donald MacLeod and Ann, maiden surname MacLeod, both deceased.

I think this family was originaly from Badentarbet. The Parish Register records the christening 16 November, 1828 at Badentarbet of a son Hector to a father Murdoch McLeod, Hector was with them in the 1841 census. Memorial stone for son Angus confirms the father of Murdoch above was another Hector.

Roderick's death is registered as unmarried 14 January, 1866 at Polbain aged 32 years. The registration notes his parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.
Murdoch's death is registered as 18 January, 1867 at Polbain aged 79 years, noted as Widower, but wife not named, parents noted as having been Norman MacLeod and Rachel, maiden surname MacLeod, Informant his nephew Norman MacLeod, likely the Norman at Polbain 61-20, that Norman's mother, Christina, is shown in her own death registration to be a daughter of Norman MacLeod and Rachel, maiden surname MacLeod, and Christina was Informant in 1868 of one of Murdoch's daughters, relationship given as aunt.
Anne's death is registered as unmarried 6 May, 1866 at Polbain, aged 29 years. The registration notes her parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.
A daughter of this family not present in this census, Catherine, has death registered as 12 April, 1868 at Polbain, aged 26 years, unmarried, parents Murdoch and Abigail both then deceased. Informant of the death was her aunt, Christina McLeod, clearly a sister of Murdoch, see the neighbouring Household, Polbain 61-20.

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 5. They were all marked as born at Coigach, except Donald born at Assynt.
In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-41. By time of the 1871 census Christina "Christy" is Widowed with Rachel and Norman at Polbain 71-25.
John marries 22 March, 1865 to a Christina McLeod, they are in the 1871 census with four daughters in the Household previous to his mother at Polbain 71-24.
Ann marries 4 November, 1864 to Hector McKenzie, he is in this census with his family at Polbain 61-16. Ann and Hector are in the 1871 census with a son at Polbain 71-17.
The death of Christina "Christy" is registered as 1878 at Polbain, aged 84 years, Widow of Donald MacLeod. The Registration notes her parents had been Norman MacLeod and Rachel, Maiden Surname MacLeod.
Not certain, but I think the Murdo McLeod in the 1871 census at Polbain 71-22 is the young Murdo above.
Christina is Informant of the 1868 death registration of a daughter of the previous Household, Polbain 61-19, relationship as aunt, Murdoch there had Informant of his own death registration Norman MacLeod, clearly the Norman above. So clearly Christina in this Household was a sister of Murdoch in the previous.

These two are buried at Badenscallie, the memorial includes some details; Angus died 22 April, 1875 at Polbain aged 42, it says he was "Mac mhurcaidh mhic eachainn", which translates as "son of Murdoch, who was son of Hector". It also notes he had been in the army, serving during the Indiam Mutiny of 1857-8. It says Helen died 3 July, 1927 at Altandhu aged 72 (so born about 1855), the stone erected by "K. A. That couple were in the 1841 census at Faochag. She has siblings in this census; Janet Ross at Reiff 71-71, Duncan McKenzie at Reiff 71-76, and Hugh McKenzie at Faochag 71-80. Her brother John MacKenzie emigrated to Australia in 1848, and is an ancestor of the late Barbara Kolle of Melbourne.

In the 1881 census this family is at Polbain 81-16.
Civil Registration records the marriage 1 March, 1866 of Murdoch McLeod to Catherine McKenzie. Also recorded is the birth of Ann 16 October, 1867 and Margaret 23 April, 1874 to that couple. Cannot see though a daughter Chirsty whose birth was registered in 1870 though.

John's father was Donald, present in the 1861 census. I am sure Dolina above was named to honour her grandfather shortly after his death.
The marriage of John Mcleod to Christina McLeod was registered as 22 March, 1865, and registration of the births of their children confirm this was that couple. The marriage registration notes Christy was also resident Polbain, her parents were John MacLeod and Isabella, maiden surname MacLean, cannot see her with her family in 1861, but in this census her parents and five of her siblings are at Polbain 71-26.

This family was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-21. In the 1881 census Isabella ("Bell" above) is Widowed, living with three of her unmarried children at Polbain 81-21.
John's death is registered as 26 June, 1880 at Polbain, aged 73 years, "Bell" Isabella still alive then shown to have maiden surname McLean, his parents noted as having been Alexander McLeod and Mary, maiden surname McLean.
A daughter of this family, Christy, is wife of John MacLeod two Households before at Polbain 71-24.
Before the next census Murdo marries Ann MacLean from Camuscoille (at least the third consecutive generation where a MacLeod son marries a MacLean daughter), and is with her and her Widowed mother Margaret in the 1881 census at Polbain 81-20. I cannot see Ann in this census, but her brother Norman and mother Margaret are at Camuscoille 71-87.

John and Malcolm die 14 October, 1879 "between Ullapool and Coigach, usual residence Polbain". Their death was a terrible tragedy, see the file at PAINFUL BOAT ACCIDENT. Death Registrations note their parents noted had been Kenneth McLean and Sarah, Maiden Surname Shaw, John is noted in the article as leaving a Widow (his death registration notes she was Dolina McLeod). Third of the deaths was their first cousin, young Murdo Shaw in the next Household. Fourth dead on the boat was unrelated Thomas MacKenzie from Achnahaird, farm manager at Badentarbat, he is in this census at Achnahaird 71-98.

Finlay was in the 1861 census with his wife Henny at Polbain 61-23. In that census Murdo and his family were in the next Household at Polbain 61-24.
In the 1881 census at Polbain 81-23 Murdo is Head of Household, I think Finlay probably dies before then.
Interesting to note Margaret's maiden surname was also Shaw, as shown in the registration of their marriage 31 January, 1856, and the births of eight of their children.
Young Murdo dies 14 October, 1879 "between Ullapool and Coigach, usual residence Polbain". A terrible tragedy of four drownings, see the file at PAINFUL BOAT ACCIDENT. Three of the above people were ancestors of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO), as Murdo and Maggie were her grandparents, and Christina her gt-grandmother! Allana has provided lots of info on this family.
Christina's husband had been a tailor, Roderick MacLeod, they married at Dornie in 1844. Roderick died in 1860.
Allana says Margaret "Maggie" was a McCraine from Jura, Murdo boarded with her family while working as a mason building the distillery at Caigenhouse there, and married Margaret 17 January, 1878. Allana says Margaret always missed the beautiful Isle of Jura, and never felt at home in Polbain, where she was considered an "incomer".
