Obituary for Capt. Robert R. Fudge

The Christian Index, 11 Nov 1864

“To the long list of the noble brave whom death’s shaft has laid low, with grief we add the name of Capt. Robert R. Fudge, company K, 11th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, who fell at the head of his regiment, while gallantly leading a charge upon the enemy on the 7th of October, 1864.  A brave officer, conscientious in the discharge of his duties, of fine natural powers of mine, a graduate of the University of Georgia, in character firm and quiet, his loss is mourned by the regiment.  He was one of the great number whose first song of praise to Jesus has gone up from the soldier’s camp.  His conduct as a Christian was thoroughly consistent, and, knowing well his daily life, we doubt not his welcome to the bliss of the redeemed.  He lived one hour after receiving the mortal wound.  His last message to his friends was :  “Tell them I died doing my duty.”       -Wm. A. Timmons,  Chaplain, 11th Ga. Regt.
