It is with sad hearts that many men and women in this community record the death of Miss Abbie Colby.

She was better known as one of the best loved teachers who ever taught in our rural schools. Hundreds of men and women of the 80’s and 90’s went to school to Miss Colby and in her schoolroom “Thoroughness: was her motto. Those were the days when the United States lived close to Christ and schools songs were, “Rescue the Perishing”, “The Great Physician Now Is Near”, and all those precious hymns composed by P. P. Bliss and Ira D. Sankey. Then those trips in the woods on Saturday afternoons - for never a day was taken from the five day a week periods, - when Miss Colby taught, all nature was the manifestation of the love of God.

She was buried in the Courtland Cemetery at Rockford, Kent County, Michigan She attended Union High School in 1878 in Rockford, Michigan. She was a school teacher for 27 year in Michigan.

The road through Bow was only a bridle path from the hill where the first meeting house was built, and extending on to where Bow Mills village is now located (1895). The Colby purchase included the land on Wood Hill, both sides of the path, and that portion east of the bridle path was seperated by the road running easterly from Wood Hill to Great Hill.

Here his five sons settled, --Elijah, where P. Green now (1895) lives; Thomas, in the valley, fourty rods west of the road; Willaby, north of the junction of the road east, where Sterling Colby now (1895) lives; John, on the southwest corner of the lot, and Abraham, the father, with his ypungest son, Jonathan, between the lots of John and Thomas, near the Elliot house.

Comment 2:
His name, and that of his wife Elizabeth, are noted at the Rocky Hill Meeting House in Amesbury, Massachusetts. He was a husbandman (farmer). On 16 August, 1768, he bought 120 acres of land on Wood Hill in Bow, NH for £45 (about $150 at that time). The property was bought from John Leavitt of Stratham, and was located on the westerly side of Wood Hill Road about opposite the intersection of Woodhill-Hooksett Road. It was comprised of Lots 3 and 4 in Range 14 and was divided between his sons. Abraham and his wife spent the rest of their lives there. He signed the Association Test at Bow on 3 Sep 1776 and in the 1790 census, his family was noted as 2-4-3 (meaning himself, 1 son over 16, 4 sons under 16, his wife, and 2 daughters). The "Association Test" stated that "We, the subscribers, do solemnly engage, and promise that we will, to the utmost of out power, at the risque of our lives and fortunes, with arms, oppose the hostile proceedings of the British fleets and armies against the United American Colonies." He marched to Montreal with Gen. Richard Montgomery in 1775. In the latter years of his life, he gave his house to his son Jonathan. In 1791, "The road from Wood Hill easterly between land of Abraham Colby & Willaby Colby thence extending to John Colby's, thence on to Dunbarton line was laid." He died in Bow in 1809, his wife died that same year.

From the Last Will and Testament of Abrham Colby, Essex County Probate records, Vol. 424, pages 28 - 30:
Know all men by these presents that I, Abraham Colby, of Salisbury in the County of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, mariner, being of sound, disposing mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament.

First, I give and bequeth to Thomas J. Clark of said Salisbury and his successor in trust the dwelling house, land and outbuildings standing thereon situated at the Salisbury Mills Village on Market Street that I purchased of Charles B. Patten and also the sum of one thousand dallars, and also one half of all the personal property that I may die possessed of excepting what I may dispose of in this will to be held by said Thomas J. Clark and his successor in trust, to pay over the income thereof semi-annually or as occaision may require and so much of the principle as the said trustee may deem proper in the case of need, to my daughter, Mary O. Mann during her life. All payment to be made to said Mary O. Mann on her order by the said trustee - all of said payments to be made at her disposal without any controls or any interference from her former husband David Mann, and at the decease of my Mary O. Mann should there be any property left, I have given her the income of, I give her liberty to dispose of it between her children and grandchildren as she may think proper. Her former husband, David Mann, is never to have one dollar of the property I have given her or her children in no manner whatever, direct or indirect, for he has already had his share. Should the trustee of the property I have committed to his trust deem it her interest and with her consent to exchange the property I have given her in trust bearing in mind the safety of the investment rather than the high rate of interest, he has the liberty to do so, and her receipt shall in all cases be his discharge and I also give her the priviledge of living in my house that I now occupy with the priviledge to use my provisions, fuel and furniture during the time after my decease.

Second, I give to my son, Samuel S. Colby, all the land and buildings that I own at Salisbury Point except the piece of land on the hill not fenced in adjoining my land. I also give him my "waring" apparell, my nautical instruments, charts and spye glass also one half of my personal property that I may be possessed of, excepting what I may dispose of in this will, for his own use and disposal.

Third, I give to Elisa Ann Colby, wife of my son Samuel S. Colby, three hundred dollars at her own disposal.

Fourth, I give Abraham C. Mann, my grandson, a certain piece of land, situated on School house hill, so called and is bounded as follows, southerly by John Merrill's heir's land, westerly by the highway, northerly at the school district's land and easterly on land of Henry Kingsbury's and my land as the fence now stands, reserving a right to pass over said land the south side of said land twenty feet wide, to pass and repass as occaison may require to the wood house now occupied by my son but not to be left open for a common pass way. I also give him my gold watch and five hundred dollars to him and his heirs.

Fifth, I give my granddaughter, Sarah C. Hoyt, all demands I hold against her husband, Enoch N. Hoyt, and also three hundred dollars in cash not to be used for any one person excepting for her and her children.

Sixth, I give Elbridge G. Colby one hundred dollard provided he is alive at my decease.

Seventh, I give Nelson Gee Hoyt, son of Enoch N. and Sarah C, Hoyt of Newton, NH one hundred dollars to be paid out in schooling for him.

Eighth, I order fifty dollars to be deposited in the Provident Institution for Savings in the Towns of Salisbury and Amesbury by my executors. The interest on the same is to be used to keep my lot of land in the burying ground at Salisbury point "in" good repair.

Ninth, I ordain and appoint Samuel S. Colby, my son, and Thomas J. Clark, sole executors of this my last will and testament.

In testamony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal and publish and declare this to be my last will and testament in the presence of the witnesses named on the next page, this the sixteenth of March, 1865.

The obituary in the Newburyport News on September 29, 1865:
Two venerable sea captains, long sailing from the Merrimack River, have died this week: Capt. William LeCraw of this city, a native of Marblehead, who has continued to follow the seas till within two or three years - his voyage being in the ship East India to Calcutta: and Capt. Abram Colby, at Salisbury Point, who retired from salt water several years ago. He was known as sailing a Boston packer, before the days of railroads, when most of the merchandise was carried coastwise in small vessels -- in the days when Salisbury furnished her Osgoods, Bickfords and Fowlers for the business. He was far advanced in life, an honest, useful, upright life, which made his breed the best citizens of this town. As long ago as we can remember, these men LeCraw and Colby, were of the large number who spent much of their leisure time in the Davenport store, at the head of the Ferry wharf. They have nearly all passed to the other side of the great river; we shall never see their like, in many repects, again.

A receipt was found in the home of Warren Mann at 9 Evans Place, Amesbury, MA for a portrait of "Capt. Abram Coleby painted October 28, 1819 by Moses Cole in Newburyport - portrait and frame $8."
Frescoes were painted in the hallway of the house at 436 Main Street, Amesbury, MA. by Rufus Porter, itinerant artist, cir. 1830 - 1835. The house was built in 1809 and is refered to as the "old Captain Samuel Smith Colby House" in the book "Rufus Porter Rediscovered" by Jean Lipman.
No record can be found of Abraham Colby being a "Captain" but he is refered to as a "Skipper" on page 85 of the "History of Salisbury" by Margaret Rice: "Five of the above, Penson (John), Nathaniel and Reuben Osgood, Ezra Morrill, and Abraham Colby, were honored with the title of "Skipper". All were men of outstanding ability who added much to their community." ( Listed by early historian, Alfred Bailey).
A fire bucket from a private collection exhibited by the Historical Society of Newburyport was owned by Abraham Colby: graphic portrayals of a brick Federal-period mansion being engulfed by flames and smoke and a foundering three-masted vessel flank leather fire bucket No. 1 with the popular motto "All Hands/Hoa" and "A Colby" in bold letters. his fire bucket is in the possession of Mary Lou Bartlett Bricket who grew up in the house at 434 Main St., Amesbury.

From "History of Essex County, Massachusetts" page 1479:Captain Abraham Colby married Sarah, daughter of Colonel Jonathan Smith and had two children, Mary O. and Samuel S. Captain Colby in early life learned the trade of tallow chandler, and later in life was engaged in the fishing business, sending out vessels for that purpose, and was also employed for a time in the coasting trade. In 1812 he went privateering in the ship "America"; finally retired from active business and settled down to enjoy the fruits of his labors.

He was president of the Amesbury and Salisbury Savings Bank for several years, and was one of the substantial citizens of the town.
