In 1860 he was a Farmer in New London, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He appeared in the census in 1860 in New London, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He died on 20 JUL 1873 at New London, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.
The 20th Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans, Vol. 2, p.307 COLBY, Anthony, governor of New Hampshire, was born in New London, N. H., Nov. 13, 1795; second son of Joseph and Ann (Heath) Colby; and of English ancestry.

He was married in early manhood to Mary Everett. He became identified with the militia as major-general, with railroads as president, with manufactories as an owner, with the legislature as a member, and with the religious and educational advancement of the state. He was first elected a member of the state legislature in 1828 and was several times returned. He was governor of the state in 1846. He was a trustee of Dartmouth college, 1850-70, and received from that institution the honorary degree of A.M. in 1850. He was adjutant-general of the state during the civil war and was untiring in his devotion to the welfare of the New Hampshire troops in the field. Colby Academy, New London, N. H., of which he was a principal benefactor, was named in his honor by the trustees. He died in the house in which he was born, at New London, N. H., July 20, 1875.
-------------------------

New London mill, stage line and factory owner. Active in militia from 1814, in state politics from 1828. Governor 1846/7.

Anthony Colby was educated in the New London common school, supported the Baptist church, and went into manufacturing. He built a grist mill in the community, then (1832) established a stage line on the road between Hanover, New Hampshire and Lowell, Massachusetts. He helped found the New Hampshire industry of making scythes - an important product in an agricultural state and nation.

Colby was New London's Town Moderator for a number of years and was elected frequently to the legislature (1828/32, 1837/9). He ran as a Whig Party candidate for the U.S. Congress (1833,1835), but lost both times to a Democrat. He was the Whig Party candidate for governor three times (1843/5) but lost to a Democrat. On his fourth try there was a runoff election, and with the aid of the Independent Democrats and the Whigs he became governor (1846).

Colby was governor during the short-lived Mexican War (1846). The state was sharply divided on the war; resolutions favoring the war failed in 1846, and passed only narrowly in 1847. As governor Colby supported the Jackson administration's protective tariff for American manufacturers, and higher wages for workers. One result of the Whig-Independent Democrat coalition which made Colby's 1846 gubernatorial win possible was that the Free Soil Party candidate, the abolitionist John P. Hale, won the 1846 race for the United States Senate. Until then, the Free Soil Party had been a small splinter group; with Hale it became a power in New Hampshire.

Colby ran for governor again (1847) but lost. He retired to New London, and established and endowed Colby Academy (now Colby-Sawyer College). He received an honorary degree from Dartmouth College, and served as a college trustee for twenty years (1850/70). He served again in the state legislature (1860/1) and was appointed State Adjutant General in 1861. In this position he oversaw letting of contracts and distribution of supplies for New Hampshire's Civil War troops. He resigned in 1863.

In Dunbarton, Dec. 20, perished in the great pond (so called) Mr. Archelaus Colby, aged about 60. He was found seven days afterwards, standing nearly erect with his head and shoulders frozen into the ice. On seeing the lifeless body extracted, reflections arose from which was written the following ACROSTICK:

My blood runs cold, while I behold
Relentless death appear:
Alas! but how relentless now
Returns the monster here!
Can it so be, that heaven's decree
Has brought him to this place ?
Even around his head is found
Lock'd adamantine ice.

Arden K. Colby

It was only four months ago that Arden K. Colby stopped by at the Herald office to say "hello" on his way to Charleston, S. C., where he and his family planned to make their home. Little did he realize he was also saying "good-bye" to his old friends. He died suddenly of a heart attack last Thursday afternoon in Charleston.

Commander Colby was born in Crystal Lake on Aug. 27, 1916, attended the Crystal Lake schools, and was graduated in 1933. He went into the Navy at Great Lakes in 1942. Later on, he served on a P.T. boat and submarine chaser and then was stationed at Charleston. Showing outstanding ability, he was transferred to the Supply Corps school at Harvard university, Cambridge, Mass. He received his commission as ensign after completing this course, in 1943.

He met his wife, Kathryn Burmester, when he was stationed at Charleston. They were married in Cambridge on Oct. 30, 1943.

A career man in the navy, Commander Colby served all over the world in places such as South America, Ireland, Scotland, England, San Francisco, Shanghai, Seattle, Guantanamo, Cuba and Japan, as well as Great Lakes, Washington, D. C., and California.

He retired in November, 1966, having advance from yeoman to full commander over a period of almost 25 years. On the P.T. boat he was commended for bravery on these small boats but which were huge in importance.

His father, Ernest Claude Colby, died in September, 1949, and his mother, Bessie Alice Lund Colby, died only this year, on Feb. 23, 1967. A brother, Winfield Scott, died as a baby.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; two daughters, Mrs. Jonathan (Alice Ann) Buell, Costa Mesa, Calif., and Marie of Charleston; a son Arden Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Agnes) Ewert and Mrs. Evelyn Rechlin of Crystal Lake; a brother, Warren, of St. Joseph, Mich.; a baby granddaughter, Jean; and nieces and nephews.

Rosary was recited at the McAlister funeral home in Charleston on Sunday evening. Funeral services were in the Blessed Sacrament church at 10 a.m. on Dec. 4. Burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Charleston.

Mr. Colby, as a youth, came to have a very large number of friends. He was a newspaper carrier boy for several years and then was employed in the local news agency, at that time located in the former Blethen hotel building. He was then employed in his spare time at Tober's Men's store while doing high school and college work. He was with the Commonwealth Edison Company when he entered the service, having been graduated from the University of Illinois.

Possessed of a highly intelligent mind, friendliness and a keen sense of humor, it was not surprising that he went far in his career with the Navy. The many who knew him well treasure this acquaintanceship and friendship for it was a genuine pleasure to have the talented Arden Keith Colby as a friend. He served his God, country, family and friends faithfully and well. His was a full and helpful life.
