Laid at Rest.

Mr. Asa J. Colby, an old and well known resident of Alexandria, died on Friday afternoon last of paralysis. The first stroke occurred two years ago and he has been helpless ever since. The deceased was born in Erie county, N. Y., and at the time of his death was 78 years and 22 days old. He came to Minnesota in 1869, settling on a farm in Lake Mary, this county. Twelve years ago he moved to Alexandria, where he resided since. His wife survives him.
The funeral was held from the residence on Sunday morning, Rev. E. A. Curtis preaching he funeral sermon.

Obituary.

Died of paralysis, at his residence in Alexandria, Asa J. Colby, aged 78 years and 22 days.
Asa J. Colby was born in Holland, Erie Co., N. Y., in the year 1811. He was married to Harriet L. George in 1834 and settled on a farm in his native town where he remained until 1869, when he removed to Minnesota and took a homestead in Lake Mary remaining there until too infirm to work when he sold out and located in Alexandria. He has been an invalid for many years, being almost helpless for two. He was a kind, honest, conscientious man; one who could truly say that he never knowingly wronged any one. He leaves a wife and an adopted son, and many other relatives to mourn his loss.

Averill Clayton Colby
Averill Clayton Colby, 70, of 37 Kenwood st., Hammond, a utility company executive many years, died yesterday in his home. He was a director of the Northern Indiana Public Service company and the Gary National bank and president of the Gary Methodist Hospital board.

Mr. Colby was manager of Detroit's municipally owned street car system from 1921 to 1931. From 1931 to 1945 he was president of the Chicago & Calumet District Transit company and from 1935 to 1943 was president of the Gary Heat, Light and Water company. He had lived in Hammond since 1931 and formerly was president of the Hammond Rotary club and the Hammond Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving are his widow, Corrie, and two sons, Averill Jr. and Donald. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the First Methodist church, Hammond.

Age 87 of Munster, Indiana, passed away January 5, 2003.

Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rosemary; loving son, Averill (Sarah) Colby III of Valparaiso; loving daughters, Rosemary (Thomas) Nelson of Munster and Elizabeth (Joseph) Goclowski of Madison, Connecticut; 4 grandchildren, James A. Nelson of Phoenix, Arizona, Sarah E. Nelson of Munster, Indiana, Sasha S. Goclowski of Madison, CT, Maximilian Goclowski of Madison, CT.

A memorial service will take place on Thursday, January 9, 2003, 11 a.m. at the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Munster, 1101 Park Dr., (corner of Park & Columbia), with Rev. Bennett Jones officiating.

He was a graduate of Hammond High School, Class of 1934. A graduate of Purdue University, Class of 1938 in Mechanical Engineering. A retired Manager of Energy at the U.S. Steel, Gary Works. Past president of the Iron and Steel Engineers Association. A member of the Hammond Jaycees, Red Cross, and the Gary and Hammond Rotary Club. A Vestry member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a 33rd Degree Mason. A 64 yr. member and past Potentate of Orak Shrine Temple.
