Benjamin COLBY was christened/baptized on 20 OCT 1732 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. (BOOK SOURCE: "The Colby Family in Early America" by Frederick Lewis Weis, Caledonia, The Colonial Press, pub 1970.) Parents: Obadiah COLBY and Elizabeth GEE.

Benjamin COLBY was christened/baptized on 20 OCT 1723 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He was living in 1747 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He died about 1760 at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He had administration granted for estate on 2 OCT 1766.
Comment 1:
Walker's book says that Benjamin's son Benjamin lived with his grandparents, Ambrose and Betty, so Benjamin must have died young. Benjamin's son had inherited the property of his grandfather Ambrose by 1799, according to Walker. There are no records of Benjamin's wife or children to prove the connection, except the family bible of the Conant family of Maine. from 'Lineage of Philander M. Colby of Arborville & Bradshaw, Ne., and Spencer Colby of Hamilton County, Ne. by Claudia K. (Miller) Forster

Benjamin Colby, father of Benjamin and son of Ambrose, was baptised on October 20, 1723.

Comment 2:
Morton T. Goodrich, who compiled "The Ancestors of Forrest H. Colby" in 1926, states that he had not found the record of his marriage, but since he was known as a coaster, he presumably married a girl from some Massachusetts coast town or possibly from Wiscasset.

He was in Wiscasset, then Pownalborough, in 1749, when he signed a petition asking for the incorporation of the town. He settled the estate of his brother Ambrose in 1766. Some have said that his estate was settled by Ambrose but this could not be true because the records are not at Wiscasset and the records would be at the county seat of the county in which the testator died. See Essex County Records.

The census of 1790 shows that the only Colbys then living in Wiscasset were in the families of two widows, Betty and Susannah. Betty was the widow of Ambrose and was Benjamin's mother. She was evidently living with three grandchildren who were children of her son Benjamin. The evidence is not conclusive, however. Susannah was either the widow of this Benjamin or of his youngest brother, Nicholas. There were four boys over sixteen and three girls in her family.

Benjamin was the "first of his name in town," though he probably did not settle earlier than his brother Isaac, or till after his marriage. He bought the farm, lot No. 10, 2d Div., north slope of Colby Hill, now owned by Emerson Giles's heirs (1878); built his original house just north of the present, and kept it many years as one of the first taverns; built also the present Leavitt house, on the range, for his son Benjamin, Jr. He was captain in the militia; selectman, 1782.

Corpl. Benjamin COLBY was born in 1750 in Wiscasset, Lincoln County, Maine. He died about 1843 at Anson, Somerset County, Maine.
Pownalborough is now Wiscasset, Lincoln County, Maine

Comment 1:
A privately published book, EMBDEN TOWN of YORE by Ernest G. Walker, 1929 has a chapter on this family. It says that Benjamin was a blacksmith. A Harry Colby is listed as having an obituary in the Columbian Sentential Apr 17, 1816. This is the only mention of this son of "Capt Benj. Colby of Embden, Maine". He was 20 when he died (possibly in the War of 1812?). Benjamin, Elizabeth, and all children but Hartley and Harry moved to Embden, Maine in 1790. Before that, Benjamin served a total of 7 months in the Revolutionary War. Some sources says he was a sergeant in all enlistments, others show him as a corporal part of the time. He served in the following companies: (1) 1775 - Captain John Groves Company, Col Samuel Harnden's Regiment, 1 month: (2) 1777 - Captain Roger Smith's Company, 1 month: (3) 1779 - Captain Nathaniel Tibbetts' Company; transferred to Captain Hinkley's Company in Col McCobb's Regiment; In the Bagaduce Expedition, 2 months: (4) 1780 - Captain Solomon Walker's Company, Col Prince's (Prime's?) Regiment, 3 months. Benjamin received a life pension as a Revolutionary War Veteran in 1832. He was then 82 years old. (Information from pension records). Elizabeth Foye apparently died, because Benjamin married Elizabeth Hunnewell in 1834. A short history of Wiscasset says that the Foyes came to Wiscasset from Rye, N.H.. Before that, they may have come from Charlestown, MA, where John Foye appears as a "mariner and distiller" when admitted to the First Church of Charlestown Feb 2, 1717. He was born in Charlestown 06/28/1674, married Sarah Lynde 11/16/1699. A son Benjamin born 10/16/1714 sold his share of his estate in 1735-6 and left Charlestown. (NOTE: This suggests that John Foye is the father of Elizebeth Foye. I have checked the Charlestown Genealogies and Estates and Elizabeth daughter of John Foye was born in 1701 and died 1721. Elizebeth is probabley a descendant of John Foye, but is not his daughter.)

Comment 2:
Benjamin served in the Sheepscot naval engagement, 10 September 1777, and also served as a corporal in Nathaniel Tibbets company guarding the seacoast in Lincoln County. He probably built the house in Wiscasset known as the Clapp House, and later, as "Lilac Cottage." He lived lived with his grandfather Ambrose Colby, and the house was built on the site of the blacksmith shop owned by Ambrose. The foundation of the house shows what was probably the foundation of the old forge. The land and buildings were conveyed to John Adams, and signed by Benjamin's wife, Elizabeth, in 1789. After this he moved to Embden, and owned the Colby Islands in the Kennebec River, now flooded by the dam at Madison.
