He was buried in the Mountaiview Cemetery at Claremont, Sullivan County, New Hampshire The trouble with writing an autobiographical sketch is that you either sound conceited as the very dickens, or as though you had done nothing worth writing about in the first place. This will probably sound like a combination of both. I was born in Claremont, New Hampshire, in 1904, and attended school there until my thankful graduation from Stevens High School in 1922. From there I went to the School of Practical Art in Boston to learn to be a cartoonist and commercial illustrator. I graduated from SPA in 1925 and sailed to Puerto Rico to make my fortune as a free-lance artist. I was very successful, reducing my fortune to eighteen cents in a matter of weeks, so signed on with the United States Customs Service, then busily but rather fruitlessly engaged in trying to keep Puerto Rico as "dry" as the then prohibition laws futilely hoped to do. We accomplished rather vague success, but it did give me a chance to chase assorted smugglers for several months and pick up many anecdotes and much material for yarns later on. Returning to the United States, via working my way north on a freighter, I took a position in Charlotte, North Carolina, as commercial artist and newspaper cartoonist for a short spell, then returned to Boston for more of the same. In 1928 I met and married Lila Thoday (who knew little of what was ahead of her by way of trial and tribulation) and moved to New York to try to prove that two could live as cheaply as one. The proof was many years in arriving! I learned to fly gliders in 1931, and so, becoming an overnight "expert" on aviation matters, began to write and illustrate articles on the subject for various aviation magazines. In 1937 I was offered the post of editor of Air Trails and Air Progress magazines, published by Street and Smith in New York. Carried out these chores until 1943, when I accepted the post of aviation editor for Popular Science Monthly. While in that capacity, I was accredited as a United States war correspondent, and assigned to the (then) Army Air Force, writing articles on arctic flying, survival, and search and rescue in Newfoundland and Labrador. I later went to Alaska to write similar articles. I left PSM in 1946 to free-lance and since then have "appeared" in over twenty-five national magazines. I sold my first book, Gabbit, the Magic Rabbit (considered pretty "corny" by my two youngsters), to Coward-McCann in 1950. This was followed by Our Fighting Jets the following year, and two nature books. Since then I have been very lucky, with a present total of nearly thirty-five books being published with quite pleasant success, about five a year. This includes a six-book series, which I have also illustrated, dealing with outdoor sports for the young sportsman. Those were particularly good fun to do, for I have hunted and fished in many places and camped in still others, from the arctic to the tropics, picking up (often the hard, cold and wet way) many things to pass along to the young outdoorsman. Besides writing and illustrating the so-called Colby Books, I write and illustrate a daily feature appearing in a number of newspapers in the East. This is called "Adventure Today," and includes material on haunted houses, buried treasure, weapons, antiques, etc., a sort of escape valve for all the small and unimportant but interesting things I have picked up along my over twenty-five years of writing. I think the secret (if there is one), of successful writing for youngsters is first of all to like writing, youngsters, and what they like. Fortunately, I like all three parts of the formula. It is not difficult to write about many things if you are interested in many things, and the fact that I have always tried to see and do for myself rather than obtain information secondhand, has enabled me to write enthusiastically and I hope accurately about many subjects. Fortunately, I was brought up in the country where a fishing pole, jackknife, and a twenty-two rifle were standard equipment, along with freckles and missing front teeth, for all the young males. This enabled me to get to know the woods and the critters who live there. Such fine "neighbors" have always intrigued me and many of my books reflect this interest. Although I now live within seeing distance (on a clear day) of New York, the woods about my home are still full of interesting folk wearing fur and feathers, so I have no trouble keeping alive that earlier enthusiasm for such guys and gals. Luckily my wife, a rabid camper, my son Fred, an outdoorsman, and my daughter Susan, an anthropologist, all share my interest and enthusiasm and curiosity about the outdoors and the things which most young readers enjoy reading about and looking at. No writer could have a more cooperative and tolerant gang to live with and work for than mine. To me, writing for youngsters is a wonderful "racket"!
