MILFORD, N. H., Jul 11, 1948 (UP)
About everybody in this village turned out to see the double wedding of a 73-year-old great-grandmother and her 19-year-old grandson.

The old gray Baptist church was packed. Many stood outside as Mrs. Lillian H. Brown repeated her vows with Charles H. Colby, 73 at the same ceremony in which her grandson, Arthur A. Hendrickson, Jr. was married to 16-year-old Ruth Clark.

Hendrickson, a high school baseball and basketball hero, who was graduated only a few weeks ago, married his school sweetheart, a junior at Milford High.

"Charles and I have been engaged since last Christmas and didn't plan to be married for a while," Mrs. Colby said. "But Arthur came over last Monday night and said 'Granny, how about you getting married along with me this week' and I said I guessed I would."

Mrs. Brown said there was scarcely time to call up her family that includes six children, 12 grand children and seven great-grandchildren.

"So Arthur and I just told the whole town (pop. 4,068) to come," she said.

"Ruth will finish school." she said. "Arthur probably will enlist in the Air Force because he's subject to the draft."

CHARLES L. COLBY (1896)

A telegram was received by Frederick Abbot of the Wis. Central R. R. on February 20, at Milwaukee announcing the death of Charles L. Colby, the well-known railroad man, who for many years was a resident of Milwaukee. This telegram stated that Mr. Colby had died suddenly at Newton Center, Mass. Death had resulted from an attack of heart failure which came on after he had finished an address before the Woman's Baptist Foreign Missionary Society, The Silver Anniversary, which was celebrated at the First Baptist Church, Newton Center. Mrs. Gardiner Colby, mother of the deceased, was one of the founders of the society, and the concluding portion of the address delivered was a glowing tribute to her. Mr. Colby had just taken his seat when the attack of heart failure came on. He fell forward as though in a faint, and was immediately carried to the church parlors, where he died within a few min-utes. The mail received that morning contained a letter from Mr. Colby. It pertained mainly to business matters, but it con-cluded with the following statement: "My health is much better than it has been for some time." The home of the Colby's at Boston Highlands was on a farm. His education was completed in 1848, when he graduated from Brown University. Then he became interested in foreign trade which he followed from 1859 to 1870. On formation of Phillips and Colby Const. Co., of which his father was the President Charles was made treasurer of the Co. He, was elected Vice President of the Wis. Central Co., in 1874 and upon the death of his father, Gardiner in 1889, he was President until his resignation March 19, 1890. He always had a warm place in his heart for the villages along the line, and especially the one named Colby.

It was his desire that the Wisconsin and Minnesota branch to Chippewa Falls should form its junction at Colby but it did not take place. It was his desire that as early as the winter of 1879-80, the village should be incorporated, that he might deed the hall to it, and to that end assisted in getting a bill through the legislature, so changing general law as to permit a village located in two separate counties to incorporate. But before the people were prepared to take advantage of the act, it was again changed, which shut Colby out.

CHARLES LEWIS COLBY, banker, at native of Roxbury, Mass., now part of Boston, was born May 22, 1839. He is a son of Gardner Colby, and descends from English ancestry. Graduating from Brown University in 1858, with the degree of B.A., he found his first occupation in the shipping house of Page, Richardson & Co. In 1861, he made his home in New York City, and organized the shipping firm of Dunbar & Colby, of which, in 1864, on the death of the senior partner, he became sole proprietor. In 1870, at the request of his father, he interested himself in the construction of The Wisconsin Central Railroad, and finally abandoned business in New York to devote himself entirely to railroad and mining interests in the West. This resulted, in 1874, in removal to Milwaukee, where he became an active citizen, interested in many useful and public enterprises. Gardner Colby, president of The Wisconsin Central Railroad, being obliged by reason of ill health to resign his position before the line was completed, Charles succeeded him in the presidency, finished the railroad, and assumed a leading part in building up the railroad system of Northern and Central Wisconsin. He was president and treasurer of The Wisconsin Central Railroad, The Milwaukee & Lake Winnebago, The Wisconsin & Minnesota, The Chippewa Fails & Western, The Minnesota, St. Croix & Western, The Penokee, The Chicago, Wisconsin & Minnesota, and The Chicago Great Western Railroads. He was also the first to develop the iron regions of northwestern Michigan. The Colby mine, the first one opened, belonged to The Penokee & Gogebic Development Co., of which Mr. Colby was president and treasurer. He afterward became president of The Consolidated Mines and The Aurora Iron Mining Co. Greatly occupied with all these interests, Mr. Colby, nevertheless, found time for charitable religious and educational work. He contributed the larger portion of the funds required for the construction of two churches in Milwaukee, was next to one of the largest contributors of the Y. M. C. A. building, and gave the Babies' Home the land on which their building stands, besides being a regular contributor to, and efficient friend of, most of the charitable institutions of that society. The Wayland University at Beaver Dam received a large gift from his generous hand. In politics, Mr. Colby is a staunch Republican, and his speeches during the Garfield and Blaine campaigns met with an enthusiastic reception. He was a member of the Wisconsin Legislature in 1876, and was sought for other higher political positions, which, however, he declined on the ground that duty to his associates in business would not permit him to forsake them. Mr. Colby returned to New York in 1890, and has since been senior partner of the firm of Colby & Hoyt, in Wall street. He is a member of the Union League, Metropolitan, Lawyers', Down Town, University, and Brown University clubs, and the Alpha Delta Phi, The Sons of the Revolution, and The New England Society; and a honorary member of The American Society of Civil Engineers. Since graduation, the honorary degree of A.M. has been bestowed upon him, as well as an election as honorary member of I. B. K. He has for several years been president of the Brown University club, and is also a Fellow of that University. He has also served at different times as president of the international convention of the Y. M. C. A., vice-president of The American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, trustee of the Y. M. C. A. of New York city, and president of The New York Baptist Mission Society. Mr. Colby is a director of The Mercantile National Bank, and The Farmers' Loan & Trust Co.
