On Sunday afternoon, June 18, 1937, around two o'clock, Mr. Colby went to his barn where he committed suicide, shooting himself with and automatic rifle. He was found around four o'clock in the upper part of the barn, by Roscoe Wallace of Melrose, Mass., son of Mrs. Colby by a previous marriage. The Wallaces were visiting for the day. It should be remembered that his grandfather, Ezekiel Colby, also committed suicide.

C. WALTER COLBY CABLE MILL OPERATOR

C. Walter Colby, 84, of 53 S. Main St., died Saturday evening in Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt.

Mr. Colby served in the Army during World War II and was a cable mill operator at Aluminum Company of America, Massena, until his retirement.

Born Nov. 5, 1916, in Syracuse, son of Rossie J. and Ella Hourihan Colby, he was a 1936 graduate of Norfolk High School and married Virginia B. Southworth.

He was a communicant of the Church of the Visitation and a member of the Alcoa 25-Year Club and the Massena American Legion post.

Surviving are a son and his wife, Philip and Cathy, Fairport, three grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two brothers died before him, William W. on Jan. 27, 1979, and Kenneth Roscoe on March 17.

A joint memorial service for Mr. Colby and his wife, Virginia B., who died Feb. 18, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Visitation with the Rev. Andrew J. Amyot, pastor, officiating.

There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Buck Funeral Home.

Donations may be made to the Norfolk Volunteer Rescue Squad.
