Clarence W. Colby, son of Webster and Abagail Colby, was born on a farm north of McHenry Dec. 22, 1848. He was united in marriage April 28th, 1870 to Henrietta Thurwell. To this union were born four children: Mrs. Lee Lockwood and Mrs. Truman Flanders, both of Crystal Lake, Edna who passed away about three years ago, and Myrtle who died in childhood.

After his marriage he purchased a farm near Barreville and resided there for fifty years. Then, because of failing health, he disposed of his farm property and moved to Crystal Lake.

Mr. Colby was abundant in labors and devotion to those for whom God made him immediately responsible. Forgetful of self he gave unsparingly of time and strength that they might have those comforts he wished them to have. He lived a quiet, unobtrusive life and was greatly loved by those nearest to him and highly honored and respected by all who knew him. During the past three years he has been in rapidly declining health and at 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3d., he passed quietly away at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 14 days.

He is survived by his devoted wife; two daughters, Mrs. Lee Lockwood and Mrs. Truman Flanders both of Crystal Lake; also two sisters, Mrs. Emma Colby of Crystal Lake and Minnie Colby of California; and one brother, Fred Colby of Crystal Lake.

We can say of him as Alfred Tennyson said of his friend who had passed away - "God's finger touched him and he slept."

Funeral services were held from the home on Woodstock street, Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., Rev. H. D. Dick officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the McHenry cemetery.

(with photo, captioned: "One of Crystal Lake's most successful and long-time business men, Claude V. Colby, passed away yesterday after an extended illness. The dean of all local automobile dealers, he is shown here as a youth with a 1903 two cylinder Ford purchased at a cost of $1000, the Colby firm bringing the first Ford dealership here.")

Claude V. Colby, 61, passed away at 7:55 yesterday morning, Aug. 1, 1951 at his home at 131 N Caroline st., following an illness extending over the last 3 years.

Mr. Colby was born Dec, 5, 1886 on a farm in the McHenry area, a son of Fred Leon Colby and Lydia Mann Willard Colby. He was married to Della Lund on June 16, 1909 and she survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Mrs. E. T. (Ethel) Larkin of Wilmette and two sons, Fred and Scott of Crystal Lake and three grandchildren besides numerous other relatives and a wide circle of friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, daylight saving time, at the Warner Funeral home where friends may call. Services will be in charge of the Rev. Gilbert A. Weishaar of the Methodist church with interment in Crystal Lake Union cemetery.

The Colby firm was founded in 1885 by Fred Leon Colby when farm implements were handled. As the transportation industry progressed, the Colby firm was quick to note this progress and Fred and son Claude conferred with Henry Ford about automobiles. They took on the Ford line of cars and they were successful in this business, later handling Studebaker cars.

In 1900, Claude V. Colby entered partnership with his father and this partnership continued until 1921 when his father retired. Soon afterward the Chrysler-Plymouth dealership was acquired, the firm having handled these cars since they were first manufactured.

In 1933, Mr. Colby entered partnership with his son, Fred W. and in 1934 his youngest son, C. Scott Colby became a partner. When he retired from the business, his two sons took over full operation and as was true of their father and grandfather before them, have continued to be most successful in the automobile business.

Mr. Colby was always quiet and unassuming and applied himself diligently to the work in which he was so interested. Intelligent and understanding, he distinguished himself in the business life of this city. He always worked for the best interests of the community which he enjoyed so much. He was at the Sherman hospital last week and wished to be brought home. Sunday the ambulance was driven to the modern Colby garage buildings for what proved to be his last view of the property growth in which he had been such a prominent factor.

"Colby's since 1886," a slogan used by the business, will long remind local residents of the part played by Claude Victor Colby in the life of the Crystal Lake Community.
