Eliphalet COLBY was born on 28 OCT 1728 in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was baptized on 6 MAY 1750 in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He died on 8 APR 1812 at Hopkinton, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He has Ancestral File Number 3RWG-9X.
The Eliphalet Colby family had lived first in Amesbury, MA, then South Hampton, NH, Hopkinton, NH and then Henniker, NH.

Eliphalet owned the covenant of the First Church in Amesbury and was baptized there May 6, 1752 or 1750.

On October 14, 1764 the South Hampton, NH Church gave Eliphalet and Mary a Letter of Dismissal to the Church at Hopkinton, NH. The family lived in Hopkinton from then until some time before the end of the Revolution (1776-1779).

Then they moved to Henniker, NH and pioneered the Dana Harwood place in the northeastern part of town, near the edge of Hopkinton. His three sons, Eliphalet, Nicholas and Levi came with him, or soon after. Nicholas settled near his father and Levi settled in the northwest part of town, a few rods east of the Samuel Patten place.

The History of Henniker says that he erected a sawmill in the northeastern part of Henniker and operated it for nearly a half a century. He is listed as a tax payer in Henniker in 1800. He is buried in the cemetery on the main street in Hopkinton, but his wife's grave cannot be found there. She might have remarried.

Regarding "Owned the Covenant." This is in the old sense of "own" (meaning to acknowledge). In effect, this was a confession of faith; it was a precondition to church membership. It meant that the person accepted the tenets of the church.

"Henniker, NH. Henniker is a little crossroads village. Settled as early at 1760, it was not until 1768 that Governor Benning Wentworth granted the town a charter in honor of his friend John Henniker, a wealthy London merchant. "

"Colby, Eliphalet, came to this town before the revolutionary war, and settled in the northwest part of the town. His three sons - Eliphalet, Nicholas, and Levi - came with him, or soon afterwards, and settled."

Amsbury, Massachusetts:

Settled, 1654, Incorporated, 1668. Amesbury was an important shipbuilding center before steam supplanted the clipper ships in 1850.

From the 1858 Gazetteer: AMESBURY, a post-township of Essex County, Massachusetts, on the North side of the Merrimack river, and bordering on New Hampshire. The village, situated in the West part, 40 miles North of Boston, and about 7 miles Northwest from Newburyport, has 5 churches, and a flannel manufacturing company, with a capital of $2000,000. Population, 3143"

"ESSEX COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS has an area of about 500 square miles. It is bounded on the East by the Atlantic, and on the Southeast by Massachusetts bay, and is traversed by the Merrimack and Ipswich rivers. It has a great extent of seacoast and many fine bays which afford excellent harbors. A large portion of the great wealth of the inhabitants of the seaboard towns, is invested in commerce and the fisheries. The interior towns are manufacturing and agricultural. Until within the last few years the manufacute of leather and shoes were almost the only branches of industry; but recently several steam cotton mills erected in Lawrence Salem, and Newburyport, have contributed very much to the industrial prospects of the county. The surface is generally rough and rocky, and the soil hard, but well cultivated, and productive in some districts. Indian corn, potatoes, and grass are among the staples in 1850 this county produced 158,264 bushels of corn; 339,423 of potatoes; 57,968 1/2 tons of hay, and 560,789 pounds of butter. There were 10 cotton and 13 woollen factories, 1 manufactories, 4 iron foundries, 11 machine shops, 3 flour mills, 10 grist mills, 1 rolling mill, 16 saw and planing mills, 25 tobacco, 2 India-rubber and 8 morocco factories, 1 piano-forte manufactory, 26 ship-yards, 7 ship-smiting establishments, 101 tanneries and 5 mast and spar manufactories. It contained 168 churches, 21 newspaper offices; 15, 574 pupils attending public schools. The Merrimack river is navigable for sloops of 200 tons to Haverhill in this county. Essex is traversed by railroads connecting Boston with Gloucester, Portsmouth, Portland, and Manchester, and several short lines partly intersect it. Organized in 1642. Seat of justice, Salem, Ipswich, and Newburyport. Population, 131,300."

John Greenleaf Whittier lived in Amesbury, for 56 years. Most of his poems were written there.

1780 - May 19. "The 19th of May of this year is celebrated as the Dark Day. As an old rhymster said..."

"In 1780, the nineteenth of May, will ever be remembered as being the Dark Day."

"The obscurity was so great that birds sought their perches at mid-day, and the people had to light candles in order to distinguish objects in their houses. Many superstitious persons thought the day of doom was certainly approaching.

"About ten-o'clock' wrote Mr. Phineas Sprague, of Malden, in his journal, 'it began to rain and grew very dark and at 12 it was almost as dark as Nite so that wee was obliged to lite our candles and Eate our dinner candle lite at Noonday.'

"The darkness of the evening of that day was most remarkable. 'I could not conceiving at the time, ' says Dr. Tenney, 'that if every luminous body in the universe had been shrouded in impenetrable shades, or struck out of existence, the darkness could not have been more complete. A sheet of white paper held within a few inches of the eyes was equally invisible with the blackest velvet.'

"The darkness did not extend so as to attract much attention south of New York, nor far out to sea. it might possibly have been occasioned by the burning of extensive forests in Northern new Hampshire, the smoke of which, under peculiar conditions of the atmosphere, might have floated over a section of New England and obscured the sun.. Coming, as it did, when the spirits of the people were greatly depressed in consequence of the war, it is not at all surprising that it caused alarm. it was far more common to attribute unusual phenomena to supernatural agency in those days than - thanks be to the progress of science - it is at the present time. The belief of the people in ghosts, apparitions, and haunted housed was then very prevalent. it was almost invariably considered ominous to see, for the first time, the new moon over the left shoulder, to spill salt, or to sit thirteen to a table. A horseshoe was nailed to the posts of the door to keep off witches, and the ticking of a death-watch, or the sight of a white spider gliding down its thread, foreboded evil.. Many of those notions came from England, and they linger still in the minds of some uneducated people. the bible, which sheds light upon the meaning of many a dark passage in Holy Writ, was a word almost unknown to the. The spirt of the heavenly message they, however, generally caught."
