B.A. Columbia U., 1888, M.A. 1889; asst prof. of history at Amherst College, 1890-1891. ------------------------------------------------------- Colby, Frank Moore Feb. 10, 1865-Mar. 3, 1925 COLBY, FRANK MOORE (February 10, 1865-March 3, 1925), American editor and essayist, was born in Washington, D.C., of New England stock. His parents were Stoddard Benham Colby and Ellen Cornelia (Hunt) Colby. He studied at the Columbian (now George Washington) University in Washington, graduated from Columbia University, New York, in 1888, and received a master's degree in political science the next year. He was a Seligman Fellow there in 1889-1890, lectured in history at Columbia, and was instructor at Barnard College, 1892-1895, with a year out as acting professor of history at Amherst College, 1890-1891. He also taught economics at New York University and from 1893 to 1895 was on the editorial staff of Johnson's Universal Cyclopedia. He left teaching in 1900 to spend two years as an editorial writer on the New York Commercial Advertiser. His lifelong connection with the New International Encyclopedia (when he joined it, the International Encyclopedia) began in 1898 when he edited its yearbook, as he continued to do until death. He was editor-in-chief of the twelve-volume Nelson's Encyclopedia from 1906 to 1907, and from 1913 to 1915 he joined Talcott Williams in supervising publication of the second edition of the New International Encyclopedia, which owes many of its superiorities to Colby's genius for organization and high standards of literary expression. He was literary critic of Harper's Weekly for three months, and at various times editor, contributor to, or staff member of the Bookman, the New Republic, Vanity Fair, the North American Review, and Harper's Magazine. In an essay called "Frank Moore Colby: An American Failure" in South Atlantic Quarterly, John Abbot Clark called him "one of the few authentic literary critics that America has ever had" because he "penetrated far more deeply, exercised his judgments far more rigorously, casually anticipated the verdicts of posterity with far greater accuracy, and struck out against incompetence and pose in a far wittier, far deadlier, fashion." Colby's dryly humorous essays, written in the intervals of his heavy editorial duties, attracted a devoted but comparatively small following, and reviews of his essay collections were usually mixed. In a review of Imaginary Obligations the critic for Dial wrote: "Mr. Colby possesses a good measure of shrewd sense, a wholesome hatred of humbug and a keen eye to detect it, a practised pen, and a knack of terse, incisive, and often striking expression. But with these qualities go their defects: aiming to be brilliant and sententious, he occasionally exaggerates and makes phrases." Constrained Attitudes was a less dogmatic collection of satirical pieces, and the reviewer for Outlook called it "a lively oasis in a desert of monotonous collected essays by serious and heavy-handed persons." In Literary Review Lee Wilson Dodd complained of a lack of subtlety in Colby's humorously ironic essays in Margin of Hesitation. His popularity was augmented after his death by Clarence Day's editing of The Colby Essays, a two-volume collection of the best of his writings. Among Colbyisms in Volume I is: "Nobody can describe a fool to the life, without much patient self-inspection."
