Henry Herrick Colby, son of Jonathan and Lydia Colby, was born in 1845, about four miles northwest of the church. His father was a native of New Hampshire, and his mother of Connecticut.

Henry J. Colby
Married Bessie Lenore Breinholt
Born: October 31 1910
Died: February 20,1978

I am Henry J. Colby. was born October 31, 1910 to John Henry Colby and Bertha Maria Lazenby in Sigurd, Sevier County, Utah. I don’t remember a great deal about my life till I was 5 years old. My father and mother bought a farm four miles northwest of Sigurd where we lived in the summer time and in the winter time we moved back to town so we could go to school.

In the fall and spring my two sisters older than me walked three miles to catch the school wagon in the morning and three miles back home after school. In the summer time I herded sheep along the canal bank. From the time I was 6 years till the time was 11 when my father died. We had an old gray horse named Mary Legs. We called her triggers no one knew how old she was we surmise she was past 20 years old. I learned to ride her very young, fell off her when I was 5 years old and broke my arm. We spent many happy hours. She taught me many things while I grew up.

When I was about 8 years old my father got too sick for us to move to the farm. Mary Legs not being a town horse every time she got a chance she would get out and go back to the farm She did this several times and I had to always walk down to The farm and get her. On one of these trips she decided not to let me catch her. She started toward the west hills which was about three miles in distance. She stayed just far enough ahead of me. I kept thinking well I’ll catch her anytime now. When we had gone about 1 1/2 miles I decided if I’d lay the bridle down she might let me up to her. There were several large rocks in the vicinity so I picked out one. I thought I could remember and laid the bridle on top of it and then preceded to tag Mary Legs on up through the foothills to the mouth of North Cedar Ridge Canyon. I had walked seven miles that day. All at once she stopped and let me walk right up to her. I climbed up on her back. As old as she was she didn’t need a bridle or a rope to ride her. You could take her mane and go anywhere you wanted to go. When I got back down to where the bridle should be it wasn’t there. I hunted and looked on every rock in the area I thought. It occurred to me that my mother never lied to me ever she had taught me that if I was ever in trouble I could pray to the Lord and he would help me. I rode over to a big rock, got off my horse and knelt down by the rock and told the Lord my troubles, that I couldn’t find the bridle and I didn’t dare go home without it. All this time Mary Legs stood perfectly still where I had got off her. I climbed upon a rock and then upon her back and without any encouragement she walked directly north just beyond where I had been looking, straight to the rock where the bridle was laying on. I knew then and I have known ever since that if you pray in earnest your prayers will be answered.

In the fall of 1918 I and Selda my sister would hitch old Mary Legs to the buggy early in the morning and drive down to the farm and turn the sheep out and watch them all day. In the evening we would hitch old Mary Legs to the buggy and go home. On this particular day we were herding the sheep in the field of lucerne and it started to rain. We went in the house so to keep dry. When the rain stopped we went out to see how the sheep were. We decided we should corral them and go home. The canal which was little way from the house, it started to break its bank and the water was going down through the field between us and the sheep. We didn’t know what to do so we started to holler at the sheep. For some reason they decided to go to the corral. They managed to get past the water before the canal broke too bad. It had rained so hard the canal broke in 72 places in a ten mile stretch. One of these breaks, not being more than four or five feet south of the house. Another quarter of a mile north of the house the floods came together from these two breaks just down through the field east of the house and we were surrounded with water and didn’t know what to do. So we locked the sheep in the corral went back to the house. We decided we would have to stay there all night because Mary Legs was with the other horses my father owned, standing on a high knoll out of the flood water above the state canal and we just couldn’t get to her. When we decided we couldn’t go home we’d have to stay there for the night then my cousin Wallace Lazenby came along on a horse and loaded us on behind him and in a round about way he took us over to my Uncle Moroni’s who lived about 1/2 mile away. The break north of the house had gone down between the two houses. While we were eating supper my father came walking across the field to Uncle Moroni’s. He had driven the old Model T Ford as far as he dared for fear he would get stuck and and walked through the mud and water to see what had happened to Selda and I. He told us we had a new baby sister. This was September the 3rd 1918.

Life went along for the next three years. Dad died February 21 1921. Life was a little hectic for a little while. Mother worked so hard trying to support her six children she had a nervous breakdown. As we got a little older Tillie went to work at the store and Selda and I did everything we could do thinning beets. We did any kind of work that could be done by children. I only had one pair of overalls and when they needed washing someone would wash them after I went to bed at night. They would be dry by morning.

When I wore my shoes out, there was no money to buy anymore. It was 1/2 mile from our place to the school house. I could make it home from school without getting my feet cold when there was about six to eight inches of snow on the ground and I went barefooted to school. I sure could run. As we grew older I was 14 years old in the 7th grade. The Drs told me I had a choice to make. Quit school or go blind, so I quit school. As we all got older we were able to get more work and earn more money so by the time I was 17 or 18 years old we were doing real good having what all we could eat and having what clothes we needed to wear.

In the summer of 1929 when I was 18 years old I got a job at the Jumbo Cement and Plaster Co. I worked five months. I made $4 a day. That’s the most money I made. Things went along pretty good until the depression of the 30’s hit, then we along with everyone else had a hard time of existing. During this period of time I met a (screwy) girl with foolish ideas and the first thing I knew I was a married man.

Your Grandmothers life story pretty well covers what has happened to me the rest of my life so far.

SON OF J. R. COLBY VISITS NAMESAKE

Finds Town and Country Changed During Long Absence

After many years absence a son of JR Colby, the venerable pioneer from who the city of Colby is named, returned Tuesday for a brief view of the places where scenes familiar to his childhood were hardly to be found any more. But it was an interesting hour or two for Henry Colby, who came here with his parents in a covered wagon in 1882 a lad of 11 and left again in 1886. A sturdy youngster, he had roamed around a great deal over the prairies and he thought he would never forget the landmarks by which he was guided then, but he found the town and the country so greatly changed that everything was entirely unfamiliar as though he had never been here. He even drove right past the old homestead without recognizing it. It was the quarter where Herman Rodenbeck lives thee miles south of town.

Settlers were extremely scarce in Thomas county when the pioneering Colby family arrived here and they were very much thrown upon their own resources. For meat they killed the antelope that swarmed the prairies. The buffalo had been driven out by the relentless white hunters and just one did they see, but antelope were still plentiful. For money they hauled freight from Oberlin and from the Union Pacific lines.

When the crest of the immigration tide set in a couple or three years after the Colby family arrived, they came to the Colby townsite and put up a hotel. It is the building more familiar to later comers as the Beaver house, but then it was known as the Colby hotel. The grand opening was held before the roof of the house was completed and they had forty guests at the first meal. By the way the property still stands. Once it occupied the corner where the Pyramid Oil Station now dispenses gas and oil for automobilists. The Taylors moved the old house back to the rear of their lots but it is still used for a rooming house. When the Colbys decided to leave Colby they sold the hotel to the late Sam Youssey who used it for home base in his stage line and freighting operations for several years. Besides the hotel the Colbys had acquired their original homestead, a timber claim and a quarter of school land, all of which were sold when they left and the price was moderate.

The Colby family moved to Russell county, and later to Oklahoma. They were a frontier type and restless. New countries called them with a power that must be heeded. The old gentleman died in 1920 at Leedy, Okla., at the age of 88 years, most of which had been spent on the frontiers. His wife died a few months later.

There was a large family of children. The eldest was Annie Colby, a very intelligent girl, who was the first school teacher in the county. Too young to get a certificate, she taught nine terms of school before her death at the age of 22. In those days school districts were not organized, but in some communities where a few families had gathered they would raise a small salary by subscription of money amoung the parents and hire a teacher for a few weeks or months to teach ABC's. It was thus that Miss Colby managed to get in so many terms in so short a time. After the family moved to Russell county she was married and a year later died in childbirth at Sterling, Kansas. One of the younger boys also died in Russell county from the kick of a pony, but the others are all living.

The sons of JR Colby living are Henry, who visited us, and who lives on a farm six miles north of Liberal, Kas. He returned to Kansas after trying many locations in the far west. He is a man of 62, and still very sturdy.

Spouse: Margaret COUPE. Henry Newton COLBY and Margaret COUPE were married about 1908. Children were: Mary A. COLBY, John R. COLBY, Beatrice N. COLBY.
