R. E. Morris received a dispatch Friday morning from Mrs. J. B. Colby at Wadsworth, stating that her husband died there at an early hour in the morning. Mr. Colby was a well known and experienced commercial traveler in his day and resided for a number of Years with his family on West Fourth Street in this city.

Mr. Colby and his family removed from this city about ten years ago and have since resided at Wadsworth, where Mr. Colby had charge of the salt works in which he and his brother-in-law were financially interested. The deceased, it is stated, had been afflicted with a complication of diseases for some time, but he was able to be about and attend to business affairs. Only a few days ago he was in Mansfield shaking hands with old friends and neighbors.

Mr. Colby was about 60 years of age and he is supposed to have carried the first crackers out of Mansfield in a sample case. The cracker factory referred to was the first of its kind in Mansfield, and was established by his uncle, who is now identified with the police department of San Francisco. The cracker factory was located near the present site of the News building. Later this cracker works was owned and operated by the firm of Purtell, Hartley & Black. Mr. Colby traveled for Harroun & Hammond for a time and then went into the retail business at Nevada. He later returned to this city and was on the road for a time for the firm of J. R. Brown & Sons. Subsequently he traveled for the Ohio Suspender company of this city.

The Colby family has been in Washington for the greater part of the winter, where the daughter, Miss Mable Colby, has been pursuing her vocal studies. A wife and daughter are left to mourn the loss of a husband and father. Mr. Colby's home is at Clairmont, N. H., and at this writing it is not known where the remains will be buried.

Sir Knight Frank Marquis, of Mansfield commandery Knights Templar, also received a dispatch this morning from Mrs. Colby, conveying information of the death. The deceased was identified with the local Masonic order, being a member of the blue lodge, the chapter and commandery.
