In 1880 he was a retail grocer in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. He died on 28 APR 1884 at Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. Buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, New York. He appears in the 1820 Census in Springfield, Cheshire, New Hampshire, page 203 listing one male under 10, two males 16 and under 26, and one female sixteen and under 26. It is believed his younger brother Caleb COLBY, was residing with him during this Census. John COLBY was elected as a Selectman for the Town of Springfield, New Hampshire in 1821 and again in 1822. (SOURCE: History of Springfield, New Hampshire, Charles McDaniel.) He taught school in Wendell (which later became Sunapee), Cheshire County, New Hampshire in 1819,1822,1823,1825 and 1827. In March 1827, the Wendell, New Hampshire Board of Selectmen approved John Colby to exercise the business of ardent spirits. The following year, he and Jeremiah Newell were approved to operate the business of Taverner at their dwelling house in Wendell. The tavern and store operated by John Colby was frequently the site of many of Wendell’s town meetings over next several years. John Colby became very active in Wendell, New Hampshire town government and was elected as a Selectman in 1828, 1829, 1831, 1833,1835 and 1839. He was also the town clerk in 1831, 1833, 1835, 1836, 1838 and 1839. Five times he was elected as the Representative to the General Court (state legislature of the time) in 1828, 1830, 1833, 1835 and 1838. He held a number of other elected offices in Wendell during the years 1828 to 1840 including Town Treasurer, Auditor, Sealer of Weights and Measure, Surveyor of Lumber, Surveyor of Highways and Moderator. There seems to be no indication of political involvement after 1840. (SOURCES: Town Clerk’s Records, Sunapee, New Hampshire; Town Records, Sunapee, NH, FHL Films 15322/15323; and the History of Sunapee, William C. Sturoc.)

In 1850, John Colby, his wife Judith, son Daniel S. Colby and Maria Antoinette Colby appear in the 1850 Census in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York (Seventh Ward of the City of Troy, page 264). His occupation is listed as carpenter. There is no indication of why this family relocated to Troy, New York, seemingly giving up a prominent business and political career in Wendell, New Hampshire. Later, John Colby and his son, John Peasley Colby, would operate a grocery store, J & J. P. Colby, in Troy, New York.
