JANESVILLE, WI
John Whitman Colby, of Janesville, WI, passed away Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Kansas City, MO, on Dec. 31, 1917, to Clyde and Nellie (Millis) Colby. John spent much of his youth living in various eastern states including Ohio, New York and Connecticut.

He worked with his father in the heating contracting business, and in 1941 he enlisted in the Army. He proudly served his country in World War II in both the Pacific and in Europe. In 1944 John was part of the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He served in Europe until the end of the war and was honorably discharged in June of 1945.

When John returned from the war he married Barbara (Harvey) Colby, the former wife of his brother, Bill, who had been killed in the war. John and Barbara, along with John's parents, moved to Whitewater, WI, shortly after the wedding to start their heating contracting business there.

John and Barbara had 4 children: Carol, Joy, Beth and Bill.

In 1960 the Colbys moved to Janesville, WI, where John went to work as a mechanical engineer for R. E. Meinert Company.

In 1967 John's wife, Barbara, died unexpectedly.

In 1972 John and Jane Le Rette (a Delavan native) were married. John and Jane were married for 32 wonderful years. John often commented about how lucky he was to have two great loves in his life. He and Jane enjoyed traveling around the state and boating with their close friends. John began his own design business in the mid 1970's and designed both heating projects, commercial buildings and some homes. He worked actively at this business until well into his 80's. Jane is currently employed by the Rock County Sheriff's Department.

Johnson Colby, the subject of this sketch, was born in Newport, NH, Oct 22, 1808. His mother died when he was but nine years old, and he was brought to Sutton Nov, 4, of the same year, and was cared for by his maternal grandparents. His whole life has been passed in this town, except when working or teaching in other towns when a young man. He has been well known by a wide circle and respected by all. His early life, like many another, was checked with shadows. He worked hard and persistently to earn a comfortable home for himself and family, to whom he was greatly attached, and he was successful. Whatever he did he did heartily. He served his town faithfully as selectman and town treasurer. While quite young, at near the age of twenty years, he became a convert to Universal salvation, to which faith he strictly adhered through life, often speaking of the perfect trust he felt in the Saviour, and in the decline of life feeling the Everlasting Arm sustained and comforted him, and we are told went to sleep feeling safe in God's hands. For many years he was deacon of the Universalist church. He leaves the record of an honest, upright life, the golden rule being his motto. He was a kind neighbor, a faithful citizen and true friend. He was of a naturally quiet temperament, retiring in his address, never speaking of his sorrows and troubles to other than his dearest friends, never boasting of his successes or attainments. He had a good education and admired it in others. For several years Mr. Colby has been in failing health, being obliged to give up the active work of his farm, and fully realizing that the summons was likely to come at any time calling him away. Yet it came in an unlooked for manner. While going to his door some two weeks previous to his death, and suffering from a dizzy head, he slipped and fell, causing injuries from which his weakened system could not rally, and he died Feb. 27, 1890, aged 81 years and 5 months.

While we refer with just pride to those natives of Sutton who, seeking a wider field for their activities, have gone away from the old town and found distinction or attained eminence elsewhere, we do not forget those who have remained here, and labored for the town, and in the town, and have had here their public and private interests. It is fortunate for the town that not all the energy and capability that awakened into life here has gone away and spent itself. Those who have gone out from us and prospered have done well for themselves, and doubtless also for the place and community wherein they located, while those who have labored here have done well for this town. Strong in his convictions of right, acting always from principle and sound judgment, such a man as Johnson Colby asks but very little laudation, but it is impossible that one should be benevolent, liberal, and sympathetic as he has shown himself, and not be gratified at receiving those tokens of appreciation which Mr. Colby has many times received.

Mr. and Mrs. Colby celebrated their golden wedding Nov 12, 1889, an occasion which was much enjoyed by themselves and their man friends present, but, as not unfrequently happens after the celebration of a golden wedding or centennial birthday, death has followed on with rapid footsteps. In 1850 he was a physician in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. He appeared in the census on 19 JUL 1850 in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. He appeared in the census on 5 JUN 1860 in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. In 1860 he was a physician in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. In 1870 he was a physician in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. He appeared in the census on 26 JUL 1870 in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. He died on 28 MAY 1876 at Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio.
Graduated from Dartmouth Medical College, 1829. Physician and surgeon at Defiance, Ohio, 1832-1876, much of the time the only doctor in the whole region. Judge, Williams County, Ohio, 5 years. Major and Surgeon in the Civil War, 3 years.

Jonas Colby, M. D. was born, December 20th, 1806, in the town of Henniker, New Hampshire. His parents, Levi and Betsey Colby, were of English descent, and farmers by occupation; with them he remained until the age of eighteen, laboring on the farm and attending the district school during winters. Then he left the farm to devote his time to education, and graduated from the medical department of Dartmouth College, in his native State, in 1829. Immediately after he commenced the practice of medicine and surgery in the town of Bradford, New Hampshire, continuing it for three years. In 1832 he emigrated to Ohio, and located in October of that year at Defiance, where he has pursued the practice of his profession to the present time. In early years he encountered all manner of difficulties and hardships, being the only practising physician for several years within fifty miles of the place. In 1837 the doctor was married to Almira Hull, of Maumee City, who was the first white child born in the Maumee valley. The same year he was appointed Postmaster of Defiance, and served during the administration of Martin Van Buren. At the time the doctor located at Defiance the country was new and inhabited mainly by Indians, who contributed largely to the trade of the town until 1839, when they emigrated West to the Indian Territory, now Kansas, in charge of the Hon. R. A. Forsythe, Agent, Dr. Colby accompanying them as physician and surgeon, having the charge of about 500 for five months without losing an individual. During the same year he was appointed Associate Judge for Williams county, in which office he served five years. The doctor in his early years was an active politician of the Jackson school, though never desiring for himself office, that would interfere materially with the duties of his profession. He died on 8 JUN 1831 at Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He was buried in the East Dunbarton Cemetery at Dunbarton, Merrimack County, New Hampshire East Dunbarton Cemetery.
Jonathan Colby, the youngest child of Abraham and Elizabeth, was born February 13, 1762. He was only six years old when the family emigrated to Bow. On arriving at his majority he married Martha Alexander born Nov 6, 1760, a daughter of Samuel Alexander, an early settler on the river road in Bow. The older brothers being located on their respective lots, it devolved on Jonathan to care for his aged parents in their declining years, and to inherit the homestead. Soon after the death of his father the house was superseded by a two story, single house, a few rods north of the old one, which crippled his resources and, having a large family, he was obliged to struggle to provide for their necessities.

The new house was built about 1804. After his decease in 1831, the house was sold to parties in Concord, and Silas Call moved it, on wheels, to the corner of State and Washington Streets, where, with an addition, it may now be seen in fair condition, in 1894. Jonathan died July 8, 1831. His widow went to live with his brother, Thomas, where she died October 28, 1844.

OBITUARY.

Our father, Col. Jonathan Colby, died at his home in Holland, Erie County, N.Y., April 1st, at the ripe old age of 91 years, 6 months and 12 days, just three years and 12 hours after the death of our mother. Col. Colby was born in Corinth, Vermont, where he was married to Hannah Cooper. He removed to New York in the year 1809, when the city of Buffalo consisted of one log store and a few log houses. He cut his way through the big woods from Buffalo to Holland, took his farm and lived upon it more than 71 years. He took an active part in the war of 1812 under Gen. Scott, was at the battle of Lundy's Lane and at the burning of Buffalo. Politically, he was a Republican and never missed casting his vote with his party, even as late as last fall he went to the polls. He leaves seven children, five sons and two daughters. Three sons and a brother reside in Douglas County, and join sincerely with those who were with him, in mourning the loss of a kind father and brother, and a noble and true-hearted friend.
