He appeared in the census in 1900 in Denmark, Oxford County, Maine. He died on 5 NOV 1907 at Denmark, Oxford County, Maine.
" DENMARK, Nov. 11 - Joseph Walker Colby, an aged and respected citizen of this town, died suddenly from heart failure following an attack of acute indigestion, Tuesday Nov. 5.
He was the third in a family of six and was born in the house which was built by his father, and which has sheltered four generations. He was in the eighth generation from Anthony Colby, who was one of the band of Puritans numbering about fifteen hundred which came from England in 1630 under the lead of John Winthrop who afterward became Governor of Massachusetts.
From Anthony Colby, Joseph W. Colby and all others in Western Maine bearing this name are descended.
Joseph Colby's mother was Jane Walker, and her mother was Jane Sterling, a sister of Mary Sterling (or Mollie as the histories have it), who became the wife of Gen. Stark of Revolutionary fame.
In 1854 Joseph Colby married Sarah Jane Jordan, and the fifty-three years of their married life were a beautiful object lesson of a happy home. Three children blessed their union, one son and two daughters, all of whom have died. Two grandchildren, Irving Atwell Colby and Nettie Colby Winn, mourn the loss of an affectionate grandparent.
Mr. Colby aged eighty, and his good wife aged seventy-five years, carried their years lightly, and one visiting them was sure of a hearty welcome and abundant entertainment.
They were "Uncle Jo" and "Aunt Jane" to the townpeople, and when the news flashed over the telephone wires that "Uncle Jo" had suddenly left us, there was widespread sorrow expressed for the town's loss. He was an upright man, a good neighbor, a faithful friend, an affectionate man in his home.
Who can measure the value of such a life? Funeral services were held at his late home Friday Nov 8. Rev. A. C. Boyd of the Congregational church preaching the sermon. The floral offerings were of great beauty. The beautiful and impressive burial service of the Odd Fellows was conducted on the lawn. His wife and grandchildren have the tender sympathy of the community."
