REXFORD G. COLBY

REXFORD G. COLBY.--Favorably mentioned as a contracting truckman, a native son and a representative citizen of Sacramento County, Rexford G. Colby is making a name and place for himself among the worth-while citizens of this great commonwealth. He was born at Clarksburg, Cal., August 30, 1896, the oldest son and child of Walter B. and Anna (Berkenkamp) Colby. The former is also a native son of California, born in Sacramento County, into the family circle of Jerry and Mary Colby, who came to this state in a very early period of its history. Jerry Colby followed his trade as a stone mason in Sacramento for many years. He and his good wife had seven children to brighten their humble home, of whom only three are now living: Walter B., George and Julia. Walter Colby owns forty-five acres of fine ranch land on Merritt Island which he devotes to general farming. Mrs. Anna Colby was born at Clarksburg, a daughter of Henry and Martha Berkenkamp, natives of Germany and Missouri respectively, and they were also early settlers in this state, locating near Clarksburg, where Mr. Berkenkamp acquired ninety acres of land. He reared his little family on his ranch and educated them in the public school near by.

Rexford Colby attended the Clarksburg school and worked on the home ranch with his father during vacations and until he was twenty-one; then he struck out for himself, gaining a broad and varied experience which has been of inestimable value to him in later years. Since 1920 he has engaged in trucking, doing local and long-distance hauling, and with his brother John owns two trucks of one and a half tons capacity each, and they have built up a profitable business. He makes his home on Randall Island, about one and one-half miles north of Courtland.

On December 3, 1917, occurred the marriage that united Mr. Colby with Miss Marion Brill, a native daughter born at Crockett into the family of John and Frances Brill. They have one son, Warren Colby, and twin daughters, Peggy June and Betty Jane. Mr. Colby is a Democrat in national politics and fraternally is a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West.

LUNENBURG — Rheba C. (Locke) Hartshorn, 88, of Lunenburg, died on Sunday, June 29, 2003 at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a resident for two years.

She was born at the Lunenburg family farm, the youngest of the “Colby fourteen,” on June 5, 1915, the daughter of Luke and Nellie (Smith) Colby.

She attended the Pierce District School, was a graduate of Lancaster Academy, and Lyndon (Vt.) Normal School. While a working as a teacher in Canaan, Vt., she met and married Edward Locke. They had one child, John. They lived many years in New Boston, as Ed was employed in the Manchester area for N.H. Public Service. Rhebas’s interests were to be always involved in the community, and she served in many organizations of that town.

Following her husband’s death, she returned to her hometown of Lunenburg to live, and care for her oldest sister, Olive Ball. She also worked as a substitute teacher.

She served as Justice of the Peace for many years. Her door was always open to welcome any child or person who needed someone to listen and talk with, and she greeted all newcomers to town.

She married Chester Hartshorn in 1977, and they enjoyed being at their cottage at Neals Pond.

She and her sister Shirley fished, hunted and scavenger-hunted old dumps. She assisted Shirley and her husband Ern, when their berries and peas were ready for harvest.

Living adjacent to the Methodist Church, she committed herself as church caretaker, making sure the heat was on when necessary, providing fresh water at the altar each Sunday for the minister, and preparing for communion on Sundays.

Surviving family members include two grandchildren, Aaron Locke and wife Lindsey of Merrimack, and Lisa Locke of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a brother, Howard Colby of Lunenburg; a sister, Rachel Gould of Kingston, Mass.; a cousin, Erma Simonds of the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her two husbands and son, John; and in the past six months, sisters, Shirley Peavey and Ruby Beecher; and brother, Ellis Colby.

Memorial Services were held at the Lunenburg Methodist Church on July 5, with the Rev. Gerri Piper officiating.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Lunenburg Methodist church, c/o Deborah Thomas, 616 South Lunenburg Road, Lunenburg, VT 05906.
