Rowell Colby, one of the pioneer settlers, came to Enfield, New Hampshire, from Salisbury, New Hampshire, in 1779, and settled on George Hill, where his grandson, Lewis T. Colby, later lived. "He came to the town in March, with a pair of cattle and a sled, camping one night in the woods, where he was entertained with a free concert by a pack of wolves. The roads were indicated by marked trees. He frequently made journeys back to Salisbury, and on one occasion he brought sixty young apple trees on his back, which he planted, and lived to eat the fruit thereof." One of these trees is still living and measures nine feet in circumference. He lived on the place where he first settled until his death. He held several town offices. He commenced with very small means, but added to his possessions until he owned a thousand acres of land. He served in the Revolution and took part in the battle of Bennington.

On 25 August 1838, Lydia Colby, of Enfield, New Hampshire, aged 76 years, disposed: that she was the widow of Rowell Colby, a private in the Revolutionary War who enlisted in the summer of 1777, under Captain Ebenezer Webster, marched to Manchester, Vermont, and was in the battle of Bennington, after which he marched to Stillwater and Bemis Heights. He took an Indian prisoner on the way, and now she has the powder horn he took from the Indian. She also has a copper teakettle, which he said he took from a Hessian soldier on the same tour. She said her husband served in New York for a year in 1776, and that he was serving in 1776, when he enlisted in 1777. His service was in the Continental Army, of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Lydia, his wife, was granted a pension. (NH pension papers.) He was the father of eleven children, one of whom, the youngest daughter, was living, then over eighty years of age, in Texas, in 1886. His grandchildren of 1886 were: Alstead Brownell, James Edwards, Mrs. Mercy Flanders, William B. Cochran, Wyman P. Colby, Lydia J. Colby, Lewis T. Colby, and Mrs. Mary C. French.

Lydia's father gave them a farm in Enfield, which was then a complete wilderness. About the year 1780 Rowel Colby and wife Lydia came to Enfield and made a permanent settlement on this property. The year before Mr. Colby brought his wife he made his way to their new possessions by means of the bridle path, whose direction was blazed on the trees, built a small log-house, dug a well, cleared a small field for cultivation, and planted winter rye. After four years of residence in the log-house, in 1784, he built a small frame house, used now by our subject as a granary, which sufficed for their wants until 1800, when he built the house, now the home of the subject of this sketch. It was at that time the largest and by far the best house in the town, and it was often remarked that Mr. Colby would be bankrupted, and his fine beginning end in complete failure. No such ending came, for he was a hard worker and exercised his judgment so well that he succeeded in everything he undertook. To this new home he brought the first brass clock in the town, a standard instrument, costing $75.00, which is keeping good time to-day for our subject. He was a soldier in the Revolution, and was one of Gen. Stark's soldiers at the battle of Bennington; he seemed to be devoid of anything like fear, and, single-handed, made a capture of a noted Indian, and turned him over to the authorities; he preserved his powder-horn, which may be seen adorning the old brass clock. He brought 100 small apple trees on his back from Salisbury, N. H., and set them out, and thus came to have one of the first and best orchards in the town; some of these trees are living and bearing to-day. Later on he set out more trees, and his improvement are visible in all direction, for before his death he had become owner of over 1,000 acres of land, extending through Enfield Center, and including farms in the adjoining towns. He was a man of prominence in the town, and served as selectman and in other town offices. He was religiously inclined, and a member of the Free Will Baptist Church.

Roy L. Colby

COLBY, ROY L. - Age 89, passed away late in the evening Monday, August 27, 2007 in Jackson.

Roy was born on December 23, 1917 to Roy L. Colby Sr. and Ruth (Parmanter) Colby in Shiawassee County, Michigan.

He graduated from Michigan Agricultural College (now called MSU) in 1940 with a B.S. in Structural Engineering.

He met Gladys Murphy at Michigan Agricultural College where she worked as a secretary for the registrar. They got to know each other at tea dances held at the Union on Friday afternoons but before agreeing to marrying him, Gladys looked up Roy's grades and told him he had better study more. They married in 1940, and together they happily raised seven children until Gladys' death in 1972.

Roy's first job was with Stran Steel Company in Detroit, where he worked on Quonset buildings during World War II. He received multiple patents for his design innovations and eventually became chief engineer. He worked for Butler Manufacturing, became a Butler dealer in Michigan.

In 1956, Roy, his wife Gladys, and their then five children moved to Jackson where he started his own contracting business specializing in pre-engineered metal structures. He merged his business, Roy L Builder, with O'Hara Associates of Jackson in 1966 and continued working as a professional engineer at O'Hara's until his retirement.

He was responsible for the design and construction of numerous industrial buildings, churches, schools and other structures. Some notable projects he designed and engineered include: Way Baking Plant, Worthington Steel, Spring Arbor Field House, Alro Steel, Hayes Albion and Summit Oaks Mall.

In 1976, Roy met and married Julia (Logeman) Colby with whom he has spent a happy and caring 31 years. They enjoyed traveling together and would spend many weekends and summer vacations driving to see their children and grandchildren both in the state of Michigan and all around the country. He loved to travel and visited many of the state capitol buildings, where he was often known to insist on meeting the state governor with awed grandchildren in tow.

Roy was a member of Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church where he served as an usher for over 35 years.

He excelled in horseshoes, competing and winning many area and statewide tournaments where Julia often joined him as his most loyal and supportive fan. He was an avid and competitive bowler and golfer, as well as a successful gardener. And, as those of us whose lives he has touched know, he was also a most savvy card player.

Roy is survived by his wife, Julia; his children from his first marriage, Jan James (Bob) of Shanty Creek, MI, Jim Colby (Jo Ann) of Boise, ID, David Colby (Shirley) of Midvale, UT, Cecilia Bryze (Ed) of South Lyon, MI, Marie Gougeon (Rick) of Holt, MI, Doug Colby (Jodie) of Galesburg, MI, and Elaine Westhouse (Doug) of Zeeland, MI; and their combined 23 children and 11 grandchildren.

In addition, he will be missed by Julia's sons, Robert Logeman (Margie) of Saline, MI and Kenneth Logeman (Sue) of Spring Arbor, MI and their combined five children and three great-grandchildren; and his brother, Joe Colby (Nancy) of Kalamazoo , MI.

All of us who have been blessed to spend time in this life with Roy will miss the twinkle in his eye, his sense of joy, and his zest for a full and family-rich life.

Roy is at the Desnoyer Funeral Home where a Prayer Service will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass of the Christian Burial at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m.

Interment will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Reverend Nate Sokol officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday and Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Vigil Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
