Rudolph COLBY. Another of the pioneers of this State who has done much to make Shiawassee Township bloom and blossom as the rose is Rudolph Colby, who lives on a fine farm on sections 17 and 18, Shiawassee Township. He was born on the place September 2, 1855, his father being James S. Colby and mother Eliza L. (Nelson) Colby. They came to Shiawassee County and settled at their present location one year previous to the birth of our subject, coming hither immediately from Pinckney, Livingston County, but prior to that time from New York, about the year 1848. After coming to this State, the father secured a tract of one hundred and sixty acres, which he farmed for a number of year, constantly adding to the original acreage until he became the possessor of three hundred and twenty acres, nearly all of which is improved.
Our subject remained at home attending high school at Corunna and began to teach at the age of eighteen, in which work he continued for two years and then relieved his father of the care of the home farm in which he was in charge until 1883. Mr. Colby then began to build his present home. He has added twenty acres to the original tract of one hundred and sixty acres.
Upon the place he has built a new barn, 32 x 62 feet and twenty feet high and under which are good granaries. He erected this at a cost of $800. His barn and sheds for stock are supplied with water that is forced where needed by a wind mill.
Mr. Colby does not devote himself to any special line in agriculture, but he engages in the more lucrative course of mixed farming. He is a most intelligent man and keeps abreast with the times in all the improvements of the day. He was elected Township Treasurer in 1835, in which capacity he served for two years. And at the close of the term he elected Supervisor, and is now serving his fifth term. During his service an arrangement has been satisfactorily made for the liquidation of the old debt standing against the county of the sum of about $40,00, which had been hanging over the county for forty years, the basis of settlement being outlined by the Supreme Court as carried up by the recent Board of Supervisors. This happy result is largely due to the action of Mr. Colby and his colleagues. At the June Session of 1891 of Supervisors, Mr. Colby succeeded in reducing the equalization valuation of his township $22,000, which was an important item to the people of the township. At other times his efforts have been crowned with success toward making or modifying measures for the benefit of the township. Three years ago he succeeded in getting a reduction of valuation, amounting to $6,000. Some of the new bridges that have been built in the township have been secured by his influence in the Board. In June, 1891, the new law of School Commissioners was first tested and a citizen of Shiawassee Township was chosen for Commissioner. This concession was largely due to Mr. Colby's efforts.
The gentleman of whom we write was married January 7, 1880, to Miss Georgiana Sergeant, daughter of Collins Sergeant. She is a native of the township, being born March 14, 1861. They have a family of two bright children--Roy L. and Wayne S. Mr. Colby has been a Mason since 1866. Politically, our subject is one of the most active Republicans in the county, always having taken a prominent position in every political campaign. His a Director of the Owosso Fair Association. He is interested in every measure that can benefit in the least his fellow townsmen.

Rev. Rufus H. Colby. In the person of this well-known minister, who is pastor of the Baptist Church in Waupaca, the city has a representative of Puritan stock and of a family that for generations has been actively identified with the best growth, material, intellectual and spiritual, of the United States.
Mr. Colby was born in Erie County, N. Y., near Buffalo, in June, 1835. His father, Jesse Colby, a farmer, was a native of Vermont, where he was born in 1805. The father of Jesse was Ezekiel Colby, a native of New Hampshire, and the father of the latter was also Ezekiel Colby, who was commissioned a captain by King George to serve in the French and Indian War. And so the genealogy goes back to honest-hearted old Anthony Colby, who for the sake of his religious convictions crossed the ocean with the Pilgrim fathers, and a livelihood, at the mouth of the Merrimac river.
Ezekiel Colby, Sr., great-grandfather of Rufus H., married Miss Fowler, of an old Welsh family of Baptist faith. They had a family of eight children of whom Ezekiel, Jr., married Ruth Davis. They reared a family of nine children, eight sons and one daughter, and in 1810 became pioneers of western New York. Ezekiel served as a non-commissioned officer in the war of 1812, and his son Jonathan held the rank of colonel. Jesse, who was next to the youngest son of Ezekiel, married Mary Ann Odell, in 1833. She was born in Junius, Seneca county, N. Y., daughter of Jeremiah and Prudence (Lamphier) Odell, pioneers of western New York. Jeremiah Odell, who was a man of some literary tastes and ability, died in middle life, about 1820, leaving a widow with ten children. But Prudence Odell was a remarkable woman, of Spartan courage and force of character, and proved equal to the task before her. She raised the entire family of three sons and seven daughters to manhood and womanhood. Jesse Colby, while a farmer, was a man of deep religious nature. He was an excellent musician, and closely attached to his home, which he endeared to his children. His tastes were quiet, and in no manner did he seek notoriety. The children of Jesse and Mary Ann Colby were Rufus H., Caroline, now wife of Rev. E. W. Green, of New York; Seymour J., who served in the Rebellion and who now lives at Ogdenburg, Waupaca county, and Nathan, who died in boyhood. The father in 1863 removed from New York to Wisconsin to be near his children, but died two years later at Waupaca, aged fifty-nine years. The mother died in New York in 1875.
Rufus H. Colby, the eldest child, remained on the farm until eighteen years of age. He then taught school in New York and in Canada, and the winter of 1856-57 he taught near Madison, Wis. Subsequently attending school at the Springville Academy. Completing his education at the old Chicago University and the Theological Seminary, he entered the ministry in 1859, at the age of twenty-four years, his first call being at the Baptist Church at Weyauwega. Here he remained seven years, and then filled a pastorate for three years at Lamartine. In 1869, he accepted a call from his old church in Holland, Erie Co., N.Y., with which he had united as a member as a young man. In 1877, he was called to Buffalo, and there organized the Emanuel Church, serving for six years. Serving a number of other Churches in the East, the last being at Dundee, Rev. Colby in 1892 came west again as pastor of the Church at Waupaca. Since entering the ministry Rev. Colby has built up a number of new and weak Churches, having shown a great capacity for that important branch of ministerial labor.
In 1861 he was married to Miss Mary E. Sanders, daughter of David and Chloe (Tucker) Sanders and granddaughter of Job Sanders, a sea captain, who married Nancy Chase, an aunt of Alvin Chase, of Recipe Book fame. Mrs. Colby died at Gowanda, N. Y., and was buried at Strykersville, N. Y., her native home. By this marriage Rev. Colby has four children-Merle D., Jesse Clair, Charles C. and Ray Harold. In 1892 he married Mrs. Mary (Lowell) Oakes, daughter of Rev. Josiah Lowell, of New York. Rev. Lowell was a native of Maine, and one of a family of six brothers, three of whom were ministers and three lawyers. He married Mary Wilcox, a native of Vermont, whose parents became early settlers in western New York. To Rev. Josiah and Mary Lowell four children were born: Childs, Adams, Josiah and Mary. Seth M. Oakes, the first husband of Mrs. Colby, was a native of New York. They were married in native of New York. They were married in 1860, and the following year settled on a farm in Waupaca county, Wis. Mr. Oakes, in 1876, opened a general store at Waupaca and remained in active business until his death in 1888. Mrs. Oakes continued in business for three years, and then sold out. Mr. Oakes was a strong temperance man, a Republican in politics, and was actively interested in the welfare of Waupaca. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. with which Order Rev. Colby is also connected.

He died before 1790 at Edgecomb, Lincoln County, Maine. He was a Shipwright in Edgecomb, Lincoln County, Maine. They lived in Amesbury, East Parish, South Hampton, New Hampshire and settled in Wiscasset, Maine in 1749. He served in the militia in 1757. The record of baptisim of the First Amesbury Church, gives Mary as the name of marriag, but Hoyt says this is probaly a mistake as Abigail wife of Ruggles' was baptized and owned the covenant and was baptized at the First Church in Amesbury 16 May 1736. He was a shipwright and one of the early settlers on the Sheepscot River, Maine. On 26 January 1774 he signed a petition for the incorporation of a new town called Freetown, later Edgecomb, Maine. He signed a petition as one of the inhabitants of Kennebec River for protection 22 April 1755. Ruggles sold half of 1800 acres to Elijah Packard of Bridgewater, Mass. on 10 October 1765; 102 aacres to Joseph Huff on 22 March 1782 and to Moses Huff 50 acres on 1 October 1789. A number of his grandchildren were living at Wiscassed, Edgecomb, and other nearby places, and we suppose them to be the children of his son Edmund Colby.
