BERKELEY, Aug. 15.— All hope of recovering 4 the body of Russell Colby, the seventeen-year-old son of Professor George E. Colby, who disappeared somewhere: along the banks of the Truckee River last Saturday, has been abandoned. Waldo Colby, a brother. of the missing boy, returned home today from the scene of the search. He is believed to have been drowned.

"COLBY--Young COLBY's Body Is Found-
-Son of California University Professor-
-Drowned in the Yuba River. -
-A dispatch received yesterday at the home of Professor George E. COLBY of the University of California, bears the news that the body of Russell COLBY, the 17-year-old son of the Professor, who disappeared near Cisco on the Yuba river more than a week ago has been found. Professor COLBY left Berkeley yesterday morning for the scene, and will take the body to Auburn, where the Inquest will be held. The boy, with a younger brother, was fishing in the Yuba river when he disappeared. The two lads were separated at the time, but it was felt certain that the boy had been drowned as there was very little chance of his being lost. Searching parties hunted the river and scoured the country over a week. The funeral will take place in Berkeley after the Inquest at Auburn. This is the third tragedy of a similar kind that has occurred in the family of Professor COLBY. About fifteen years ago his eldest son, who was then a lad of about five years, was drowned while at play with some child companions. After the child's death the mother became ill and constantly brooded over the tragedy until within a few months she became so shattered in health that she took her own life." Russell Colby -

Russell Colby was born in 1855 in Boston and educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the Aurora Smelting and Refining Company in 1890 as superintendent. He and his wife, Winifred, whom he married in 1905, had no children, but they did buy one of the first electric cars in Aurora.

Like Doc Thurnauer, Colby was very active in the Aurora Community and was fondly remembered as a kind, quiet, and gentle man. He served as director of the Merchants National Bank in Aurora, and was active within the Aurora Community Chest and other civic affairs. Doc always said the reason the Community Chest did so well was because of the wise counsel of his financially astute friend and business partner.

Both Colby and his wife were avid golfers and could often be seen tramping the fairways of the Aurora Country Club - which he helped found - even on the coldest and windiest of days. He was revered by the people who worked for him at the Aurora Metal Company.

1899, October 18 -

Aurora Metal Company has its first official board meeting. The board officially incorporates the company, adopts a set of by-laws. settles some matters relating to stock and certificates, and establishes a business address.

Russell Martin Colby III, 58 GARDINER -- Russell Martin Colby III, 58, of 323 Old Gardiner Rd., Gardiner, passed away peacefully of cancer on Feb. 15, 2009, at Togus, surrounded by his loving wife, Barbara; his son, Rhett; and many of his friends and family having said their good-byes.

Russell was a free spirit loved by all. He touched so many lives in such a positive way. Russell loved being at his 'farm,' where he and Barbara shared their love of their gardens with Looka (his dog) and Annie (their cat), and enjoying the wild birds, flowers and all God's creatures.

He loved camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, riding his 'Harley;' collecting a little bit of everyone and everything he knew; and his precious moments with his wife, son, brother, sister and many, many buddies. His journeys on his bike make us smile because he loved that time and the happiness it brought him and all around him.

A Viet Nam Veteran proud of serving his country, he served in the Army as PFC beginning on Dec. 29, 1969, returning home Jan. 28, 1971.

We are all at peace knowing he's at rest.

Russell attended South Portland High School.

He was an artist, carpenter, collector, a Historian and an advisor. His wisdom has helped the growth of all he knew.

He was predeceased by his mom, Geneva Cushing Colby, his dad, Russell Martin Colby Jr.; and his sister, Wendy Colby Stoll.
