Vice President of Aluminum Company Dies in Pittsburgh --- In Field for 51 Years.

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 4 [1947] -- Safford Kinkead Colby, vice president in charge of research, sales promotion and advertising for the Aluminum Company of America, died here today of a heart attack.. He was 74 years old.

Born in Vallejo, Calif., Mr. Colby received his primary education in San Francisco schools and was graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1894 with a Civil Engineering degree.

He leaves a widow, Harriet Tappen Colby; a daughter, Mrs. Suzanne Morrison Colby of New York; a son, Henry Gillett Colby of Chicago, and five grandchildren.

Mr. Colby had been in the aluminum business for more than fifty one years. He originally joined the Pittsburgh Reduction Company as assistant manager of the New York office. Later he was made manager, and in 1905 he was put in charge of the company's Pacific coast representatives.

In 1907 the company was renamed- the Aluminum Company of America.

He was appointed assistant general sales manager, with headquarters in New York, in 1915. Five years later he was named president of the American Magnesium Corporation, and in 1925, president of the American Body Company, then a manufacturing subsidiary of ALOCA, at Buffalo.

In 1928 he was placed in charge of sales promotion and advertising at the general offices in Pittsburgh. In 1931 he became a vice president, and he took over the research duties in 1937.
