SARAH F. COLBY

HIGH POINT, NC - - Ms. Sarah Frances Colby, age 78, formerly of North Centennial Street, High Point, N.C., entered into eternal rest Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Britthaven Retirement Center.

Born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, on Oct. 3, 1928, she was a daughter of Earl L. and Dorothy Frary Colby. A 1946 graduate of Ashtabula High School, she furthered her education by attending Houghton College in Houghton, New York, and graduated from Cleveland Bible College in 1956.

She joined the First Wesleyan Methodist Church of Cleveland, Ohio, where she served in many capacities. She had various jobs, but her last was at Caterpillar Equipment Credit Union, from which she retired.

In the fall of 1994, she moved to High Point and joined First Wesleyan Church of High Point, where as a devout Christian, she served her Lord in many ways: president of Bethany Circle, treasurer of Allison Care Group, and a Sunday school teacher, as needed, in the Heritage Service on the Centennial campus of First Wesleyan.

She was a member of the "Golden Tones", a musical group that sang at different rest homes. She played Bible Trivia with folks of the assisted living and made soup for the sick. Even after she arrived at Britthaven of Davidson, she was still trying to help the patients by telling stories, even a few days before her passing.

Her hobbies included crafts, sewing, music, and putting together jigsaw puzzles.

She is survived by three sisters, Esther Nelson of Charleston, South Carolina, Dorothy (Paul) Brink of Salisbury, and Rebekah (Bill) Untch of Thomasville; three brothers, Earl (Betty) Colby and James (Loretta) Colby, all of Ashtabula, and George (Dee) Colby of Fort Collins, Colorado; to cherish her memory are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many friends.

Obituary-December 13, 1934
Mrs. Sarah Colby Sherburne Age 102- Born in Vermont August 17, 1832 Lived in community since 1840 Slipping peacefully into the Great Beyond, Mrs. Sarah Colby Sherburne died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clayton Harrison, on Thursday afternoon, December 13, 1934 at age 102 years, 3 months, and 26 days. Although gradually failing, she had been in good health until the last three weeks before her death. She died as she had lived, quietly and peacefully, with her love for mankind and her courage to meet the changes of life and the certainty of death. She will long be remembered by relatives and friends as the embodiment of the best in life with her splendid character, her kindly dis- position and her Christian fortitude making her a wonderful example for the generations to come. Born in Vermont Sarah Colby, the daughter of Ira Colby and Mary Colby, was born at Danville, Vermont on August 17, 1832 and came to McHenry with her parents in 1840. They settled on a farm north of town, now owned by Jacob Freund. Making the journey in a covered wagon and settling in a new country she knew the hardships and the courage of the pioneer which are a heritage for youth and an inspiration for the generations. Here, she grew to womanhood, married and lived during the many busy years of her long life. She was the last survivor of a family of twelve children. Her Grandmother, Lydia Webster, was related to Daniel Webster and her Grandfather,Thomas Colby fought in the revolutionary war in which contest two of her uncles gave their lives. Married in 1870 On January 1, 1870, she married Robert Sherburne at Ringwood, taking the place and the duties of mother to his family of seven children. They lived on the Harvey farm, east of the river, for one year and there her daughter, Flora, was born. In 1871 they moved to the farm southwest of Ringwood where they lived until 1894, when they moved to McHenry. Here, Mr. Sherburne died on Dec. 11, 1909. Mrs. Sherburne continued to live here with her step daughter, Anna, until the latter's death in February 1928, after which she went back to the farm home to live with her daughter, Mrs. Flora Harrison. Here she was tenderly cared for up to the time of her death. She enjoyed visiting with her old friends and would recite poetry for their entertainment. She was a great reader and her bible and church paper were her greatest comfort during her later years. Many times over did she read the "Life of Abraham Lincoln" and similar books, also maintaining a keen interest in current topics by reading the daily papers. She would recall events of her childhood many times riding to Chicago on a load of wheat, for in those days grain and pork were marketed in Chicago. She geeted her guests with a charm characteristic of her beautiful christian character and her peaceful, pleasant personality. She was a great lover of nature and flowers, and her home was always a bower of blossoms and bright foliage. mrs. Sherburne is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Clayton Harrison, one step-son, Robert Sherburne of Albion, NE., twenty eight grandchildren, forty eight great gandchildren nine great great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. Member of local church She was a member of McHenry Methodist Church for many years and was a faithful attendant and worker in the church as long as her health would permit. Always patient and kind, she saw only the good around her and was a wonderful example of christian love and courage. To her memory, we bow in gratitude for the achievements she represents. Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon with Rev. L.H. Brattain, pastor of McHenry Methodist Church, officiating. Rev. Brattain chose for his topic, Job 5:26, " Thou shall come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season". Mrs. Lulu Sherburne and Ernest Colby, niece and nephew of the deceased, sang "Jesus, lover of my soul" and "home of the soul". She was carried to her final resting place in Woodland by the loving hands of grandsons and relatives

BROTHER AND SISTER DIE CLOSE TOGETHER

The latter was Mrs. Harvey G. Dickey, Formerly of This Place, A Woman Greatly Admired by Malone Friends.

A dispatch from Richmond, Vt., dated July 26, to the Burlington Free Press says. "By a strange coincidence a brother and sister, former residents of Burlington, Hiram E. Colby and Mrs. Sarah Colby Dickey, wife of Harvey G. Dickey, passed away last evening almost at the same time. Their deaths occurred at Mr. Dickey's camp at Lake Iroquois.

"Mrs. Dickey, was taken, suddenly ill with pneumonia last Wednesday and died at 10:30 last night. Mr, Colby was in his usual health as late as 7 p. m. last night when he was taken with acute indigestion and died at 8:45 p. m. preceding his sister, by less than two hours.

"Mrs. Dickey leaves her husband and a son, Dr. Gilmore C. Dickey, of Boston. A joint funeral will be will be held at the Congregational church in Richmond at 2.30 p. m. on Tuesday."

The above brief statement tells a story almost tragic in a family enjoying these summer holidays at their summer home and the sympathy of hosts of Malone friends goes out to Mr. Dickey for many years a resident of this village, and his son in their bereavement.

Mrs. Dickey was a. woman of most lovable qualities and engaging personality, who resided in Malone with the late Mr. and Mrs. Baker Stevens, for three years after her marriage in 1876 and made friends during that time of all whom she met. She had often returned here on visits, renewing and making firmer those acquaintanceships. She was the daughter of Judge and Maria (Colby) Safford, of Richmond, Vt. and would have been 75 years of age July 31st.

Sarah Mabel COLBY was born on 3 JAN 1875 in Plainfield, Washington County, Vermont. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Nokomis, Buena Vista County, Iowa. (living with father) She appeared in the census on 7 JUN 1900 in Loup, Cherry County, Nebraska. (living at home with father and mother.) She has Ancestral File Number 18GS-541.
Mabel Sarah Colby was born January 3, 1876, the oldest of a large family. She was a tiny little person, never very strong or able to do hard work. The younger children might have been a bit jealous of her, for she was a great favorite of both Clarence and Josephine. At times her mother would put her in charge of the younger ones.

Her father had her homestead the best piece of land, much better than the one he filed on himself. Each year the family would harvest her hay crop with no expense to her, and when it was sold the money was given to Mabel. She never was able to help with the haying but she helped her mother some with the cooking during the summer.

The 1902 Colby hay crop was sold to a large ranch called the BOX-T. Ed Brahmstadt, the cowboy who came to feed the cattle, boarded with the family and soon became young Clarence’s first friend. Ed and Clarence seemed to hit it off from the start. Clarence was only eight years old. When Ed called Clarence his pal, Clarence would fairly burst with pride. Later Ed taught Clarence to shoot a rifle, and often took him along while hunting prairie chicken. They would hunt from a buggy and as they drove over the rolling hills Ed’s beautiful dog, a black pointer, would range wide, and when finding a chicken would point and hold the bird until Ed would flush and shoot it. He was a good shot and seldom missed.

Ed and Mabel fell in love, and a short time later when he became foreman of the BOX-T, they were married. Their little daughter, Alice, their only chjild, was born September 30, 1906.

Ed had been an early day cowboy and had been making his own way since he was very young, so never had the opportunity to enjoy much home life. Now with his own family, he was very happy but his happiness was soon to end. He contracted tuberculosis and after a lingering illness passed away in 1913.

After his death, Mabel sold the ranch and moved to Spokane. There she bought a nice little house that must have been about an acre of land with some fruit trees and plenty of room for a garden. She had been left ample to provide for her and the daughter.
