===========================================================
He appeared in the census in 1900 in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. He died in 1915.
Theodore I. Colby has for many years been engaged in blacksmithing in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois and is now doing business at No. 128 North Madison Street. In the pursuit of that trade he has acquired quite a little fortune and is now well-to-do. His shop is 33x60 feet, and he employs two men to help him. On coming to Rockford, he did journeyman work for three years for Sam Church, and then embarked in business for himself. He came to the city from Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, where he completed his trade, having begun it in Canada.

Mr Colby was born in the township of Richford, Tioga County, New York, and when a lad of ten years removed to the Province of Ontario, Canada, with his parents, Charles and Mary A. (Shaffer) Colby. The paternal grandfather of our subject, David Colby, was a native of Maine and of English descent. He married Miss Farrington, of the Pine Tree State (Maine), and a part of their family was reared in Maine, but in an early day they removed to Tioga County, New York, where they resided upon a farm throughout the remainder of their lives. They were among the pioneer settlers of that county and were highly respected people. In religious belief, it is though they were Universalists, as was their son, Charles, the father of our subject. On removing to Canada, the latter located on a farm at Chatham, where he is still living at the very advanced age of 91 years. He is still hale and hearty, the infirmities of age resting lightly upon him. His wife died at their home in Chatham (Province of Ontario, Canada) at the age of 65. She was born in the Mohawk Valley in New York, and was a daughter of Jacob Shaffer, a native of Schoharie County, New York, of German linage. Jacob Shaffer was twice married, his first union being with Miss House, who became the mother of Mrs. Colby. She died in the Empire State (New York), and he married Miss Cypher, of the same state, who died in Canada when well advanced in years. Mr. Shaffer was called to his final rest at the age of 75.

Our subject is the eldest of five sons and three daughters: the latter are all now deceased, but the sons are yet living and are all married. It was in Chatham that T. I. Colby led to the marriage alter Miss Barbara McKay, who was born on Prince Edward Island in 1834, and came of an old Scotch family. Her parents were Donald and Huena (McKay) McKay, both natives of Scotland. They were married on Prince Edward Island, and afterwards removed to the Province of Ontario, where as farming people they resided for some time. Later they removed to Ridgeway, Lenawee County, Michigan where they spent their last days, both having reached the age of 80 years when called to their final home.

For many years Mr. and Mrs. Colby have lived and labored together, and their efforts have been blessed with prosperity. They have a pleasant home at No. 403 North Third Street, which is the abode of hospitality and a favorite resort with their many friends. They attend the Centennial Methodist Church, of which Mrs. Colby is a member. Their union has been blessed by one son, Charles E., who possesses a great natural artistic talent and is a successful artist. He married Lillian Baldwin, and they have a little daughter, Bessie, who is the joy of their home and the pet of her grandparents.

Mr. Colby execises his right of franchise in support of the Republican party, but has never sought political preferment for himself. He is a member of Ellis Lodge No. 104, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. His residence in Rockford covers a periot of 36 years, during which time he has won a handsome competence and also by his upright life has gained the respect and good will of those with whom he has bee brought in contact.

Sgt. Theophilus COLBY was born on 5 AUG 1747 in South Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. (SOURCE: Index to births, early to 1900 New Hampshire. Registrar of Vital Statistics.) He was baptized on 7 AUG 1748 in South Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He died on 12 OCT 1824 at South Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.
He was Sergeant (aged 27, of South Hampton, NH), in Captain William Hudson Ballard's company, Colonel James Frye's regiment at Cambridge, 13 July 1775, having enlisted 11 May 1775, and was still under arms 25 May 1775.
Sergeant Theophilus Colby of Deerfield, New Hampshire, deposed on 31 March 1818: that he enlisted in December 1776, at Mount Independence (Orwell, Vermont), and served under Captain John Drew, as Sergeant, and served to the close of the war; that he had been blind for about 12 years; and that he had no family. He was granted a pension and in 1819, was living with Thomas Burbank at Deerfield, New Hampshire. He is not listed in any 1790 census return, and it would appear from this that his wife had died and that his children had probably died young, all of which would seem to corroborate his statement that he had at that time no family.

Therresa C. Rasmussen
SALINA - Surrounded by her loving family, Therresa Colby Rasmussen, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away Oct. 19, 2006, following an extended illness, in Levan, Utah.

Therresa was born in the family home in Salina, June 10, 1913, a daughter of Roy and Elizabeth Crane Colby.

She married Maurice Farrell Rasmussen, Nov. 23, 1933 in Richfield, and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti LDS temple March 1, 1940.

Of all Therresa's loves, her family was most dear. Family members have fond memories of holiday decorating and parties, especially Christmas and Halloween. Therresa was a very loving mother and a true grandmother to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Contents of her toy drawers were shared and often generously given away to admiring little children.

Her homemaking and gardening talents adorned the family home and neighborhood. Therresa's deliciously unique dinner roll recipe could not be unsurpassed nor duplicated, even though she willingly taught her techniques to promising cooks. Fun times abounded in the Accord Lake cabin that Maurice and Therresa designed, built and maintained for as long as possible.

Service was the hallmark of Therresa's life. As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many capacities including Sunday school, Relief Society and young women's organizations and supported her husband in his many callings. Therresa was a kind and generous neighbor and friend. Anyone who came to her door was promptly fed or given something, and always invited to come back soon. She never hesitated to care for the hungry and the homeless. A friend described her as “a positive, talented and public-spirited person.”

After her family, her next love was music. She took pleasure in every type of music, and she was an accomplished alto saxophonist. As a member of the Bryce's Arcadians dance band, she played for dances all over Utah during the Big Band Era. Therresa directed numerous choirs and singing groups over the years, as they performed for various civic and church groups. She was a self-taught pianist and organist.

Therresa is survived by her dear husband, Maurice, Salina; her five children and their spouses, Rodney and Eunice Rasmussen; Janet and Neil Beach, all Salina; Evelyn and Jerold Shields; Kathern and Lyle Taylor, all Salt Lake City; and Brad and Kathy Rasmussen, Hurricane. Her posterity also includes 26 grandchildren; 102 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include a brother, Darwin and Wona Colby, California; sisters-in-law, Vonda Colby and Virginia R. Dickert, both Salina; Shirley Rasmussen, Boise, Idaho; Shirley Probert, Scipio; Donna and Paul Martin, Las Vegas; and several nieces and nephews complete the family circle.

Funeral services were held Oct. 23, in the Salina LDS 2nd ward 87 South 100 East.

Interment will be in the Salina Pioneer Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Tina with home health care, hospice, and the nurses, nurses aids and doctors in all the hospitals in the community that have helped during the past several years in the care of Therresa, and a special thanks to Kaye, Amberlee and their staff at The Victorian House in Levan.

Funeral directors, Springer Turner, Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.

Thomas COLBY was born on 20 DEC 1567 in Semperingham, Lincolnshire, England. He died on 11 DEC 1625 at Horbling, Lincolnshire, England. He has Ancestral File Number 18G2-F70. He was a Tailor.

"Thomas COLBY was baptized on 20 December 1567 at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England. On 4 May 1596 at Horbling, he and Anne Jackson were married. she was born probably about 1571 the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Jackson of Horbling. There are no surviving baptismal records for Horbling from 1567 through 1575. In Thomas's will she is called Agnes, but at that time, Anne and Agnes were often used interchangeably, as Elizabeth and Betty are today. Horbling is about two miles north of Sempringham.

Thomas Colby was usually designated as "junior" to distinguish him from his elder brother, also named Thomas. From his will and the burial record, we learn that he was a tailor. He made his will 10 December 1625 and was buried 11 December 1625 as "Thomas Colby, jun., taler." His wife survived him.

10 December 1625 - the will of THOMAS COLBIE of Horbling, county of Lincoln, taylor, sick of body.... to my five sons William Colbie, Richard Colbie, Anthony Colbie, Mathew Colbie and Robert Colbie half of my goods to be equally divided amongst them, but my will is that my son William Colbie shall have my house at Dinnington for part of his portion of goods aforesaid, which cose me eight pound... if nay of these sons die before age 21 at which time the legacies shall be due unto them, then his or their shares to be divided amongst the overlivers. Residue to wife Agnes Colbie whom I make executrix.

Signed by mark. Proved 21 April 1626.

In March 1636/7, an assessment was made for expenses of repairing the church at Horbling. Thirty seven names were listed. William Colby, who had a small stock of animals, must have been the older brother. The widow Colby must have been their mother. Robert was mentioned for having been paid for some work. Nowhere is there any mention of Anthony or Matthew after their father's will of 1625. Possibly both of these brothers left for America with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630, but if so, there is no trace of Matthew. His fate will probable remain a mystery. As for Anthony, he is surely the one who went to New England in 1630. All the other know contemporary Anthony Colbys in Old England can be eliminated from consideration for one reason or another."

"Assessment agreed upon the fifth of March 1636 for the church wardens for the repairing of the church of Horbling and other duties by us whose names are here under written - Mathias Browne, William Stringer, John Hardie, with others. Every horse 7d., every beast 7d., and every score of sheep 2s 4d.

He was buried in the Sutton Village Cemetery at Sutton, Caledonia County, Vermont Identity of parents of Thomas Colby unknown.

THOMAS COLBY
came from Sandwich, N. H. and settled on the place now owned by M. A. Taft ; think, he married Elizabeth Atwood of Sandwich. He must, I think, have been 45 years of age; he had nine children then, that came with him. He soon made a home for himself and family. In 1800, he had 11 acres of improved land and one cow. In 1802, he had erected a framed house and finished it so it was assessed at $100. — His townsmen recognized his judgement and ability, both in regard to church and state. He represented the town in the legislature and held other offices. — see the officers lists. He was chosen deacon of the church, and perhaps, had more influence in that body than any other member. After some years, he gave his home place to Jonathan, his son, intending retiring from cares; from some cause as often happens when the father gives up the management to his boys, they soon disagreed, so in this case, and the Deacon, so called, built the set of buildings on the place now owned by Mrs. C. W. Willard and moved there with his son, Thomas but misfortune seemed to overtake him, for Thomas soon died. — Josiah Colby, his grandson, married the widow of Thomas and went there to live; but all was not pleasant, and Josiah removed, and Jesse, the Deacon's youngest son living, went home. He remained, but being lame did not prosper much.

The offices of trust the Deacon held were always filled to acceptance both of town and church.

Thomas COLBY was born on 25 DEC 1757 in Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. (SOURCE: Index to births, early to 1900 New Hampshire. Registrar of Vital Statistics.) He was baptized on 12 FEB 1768 in South Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He died on 12 JUN 1842 at Danville, Caledonia County, Vermont.
On 12 July 1832, Thomas Colby, of Danville, Vermont, aged 74 years, deposed: that he enlisted at South Hampton, New Hampshire, in July 1776, and served five months under Capt. Joseph Chandler, of Epping, New Hampshire, who died at Mount Independence (Orwell, Vermont, 2½ miles across the Lake from Fort Ticonderoga), soon after their arrival there, also under Lieut. William Wallace, in Col. Wymans regiment. That they marched from South Hampton, NH, through Concord and Charlestown, NH, Rutland, VT, and Skeensboro (now Whitehill), NY to Mt. Independence, where he served his term as stated. That in April 1777, he enlisted from Amesbury and served two months under Captain Merrill at Rhode Island, guarding stores and building breastworks. (Note: In this he was mistaken. His Massachusetts service was as a private in Capt. Moses Nowell's co., Col. Benjamin Titcomb's regt., at Rhode Island, from 4 May 1777 to 4 July 1777, 2 months, 9 days, including travel allowance. Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the Rev. War.) That in June 1778, he enlisted at Kingston, NH; marched to Rhode Island, by way of Taunton, Mass; crossed onto the island (of Rhode Island) at Howland's Ferry, and was stationed at Butt's Hill for a time; then down further on the island, then back to Providence and Pawtuxet, where he was discharged. That he volunteered in the spring of 1780, under Capt. Moses Nowell, at Newburyport, Mass, marched by way of Worcester, Mass. and Springfield, Mass, to West Point, NY, at which place, and at a place called Robinson's farm on the opposite side of the river, he served out his six months term. That he was born at Kingston, NH, and lived there and in the vicinity until after the Revolution, when he moved to Danville, VT, where he now resides.

Rev. Archelaus Sias and Samuel Sias, of Danville, VT, testified to their belief in the soldier's statements, as did Susanna Colby, of Danville, VT, aged 72 years, who stated that Thomas was her brother.

On 20 June 1833, Joseph Fellows of Piermont, NH, deposed that he was 71 years old, born at Hawke, NH, was well acquainted with Thomas Colby, who also was born at Hawke. That he remembers when Colby and others enlisted in 1776, from Hawke, to go to Mt. Independence, and knows they were gone five months. /s/ Joseph Fellows.

On 19 Feb 1834, Ezekiel Flanders of Lower Canada deposed that Thomas Colby and he enlisted from Kingston, NH under Capt. Eastman, in Col. Bartlett's regt. That he stayed over night with Colby some years ago at his home in Danville, VT, and knows him to be the same one who enlisted with him. /s/ Ezekiel Flanders.

On 10 August 1843, Lydia Colby of Danville, VT, aged 78 years, deposed that she was the widow of Thomas Colby, the Revolutionary pensioner, who died at Danville, VT, 12 June 1842. That she was married to him at Newtown, NH, by the Rev. Mr. Ames in July before she was 20 years old, and that her maiden name was Lydia Webster.

On July 1844, John Colby of Danville, VT, aged 49 years old on 28 March 1844, deposed that he was a son of Thomas and Lydia Colby. That he had two sisters and a brother older than he was; and that the name of the oldest child was Page Colby. That they lived there about 20 years. That their parents eldest son, Page, was 16 or 17 years old at the time.
(Note: After more than half a century had elapsed since the service had been performed, veterans frequently forgot the exact order of their enlistments and were often confused as to the names of their commanding officers and the length of their tours of duty, especially the exact dates of the beginning and end of each tour of duty. This happened in the case of Thomas Colby, and later he changed and corrected these statements to conform to the muster rolls in the New Hampshire and Massachusetts archives. But the places and dates of birth and marriage were usually correct and were then checked with the vital records in the towns where they had lived.

Sixty years after her marriage, Mrs. Colby did not fully remember the name of the minister who married her, --she gave his name as Mr. Ames. Actually he was the Rev. Jonathan Earmes (H.C., 1752) who had been the minister at Newtown, NH, from 1759 to 1791, and as it happened his records could not be found at that time, and by 1843, the Congregational Church of Newtown, of which he had been the minister had long been extinct. Hence Mrs. Colby failed to receive the pension due her as a veteran's widow.)

We also learn from her deposition and those of others, that he was the son of Nathaniel Colby, and was born in Newtown, New Hampshire, that he removed from Warner, new Hampshire, and settled in Litchfield, Maine, about 1785, at which time he married to his first wife, Jane Neal. His sister, Rhode Colby, deposed that she was living at Salisbury, New Hampshire, 9 January 1819, and that she was the heir of David Colby, who had died a Newtown, New Hampshire, 29 July 1786, whose son Thomas Colby, her nephew, had also served in the Revolution and had died of consumption soon after the war.
