Another Pioneer Gone

Ruth Barker Colby, eldest child of the Reverend Isaac and Mehetabel Barker, was born of combined paternal English and maternal English and French ancestry, in Unity, New Hampshire, October 20th, 1820. At the age of 14 acquired the trade of tailoress and a demand for excellent workmanship. During her residence at the Capitol her musical talent was recognized as a soprano or tenor leader. Her education completed at , Concord Academy, NH., she taught successfully in the public schools until her twenty first year and her marriage with Horace Colby, August 26th 1841.

The new home erected in Ohio, where Mr. Colby followed the profession of public teacher, was later changed to their native state, and in October, 1844, established in Courtland Township, Kent County Michigan, three miles east of Rockford, remaining there 62 years their permanent homestead.

Duty, devotion and the exemplified motto, "To do what the hands find to do," in conformity to a Higher Power, characterized her home rule. Her favorite pastime was among the useful and beautiful books, flowers and the needle, sacred tokens of which remain.

In 1878 a new lease of life seemed granted, as her husband and daughter Mary, journeyed with her to the Pacific Coast, while her declining years have been hallowed by reciprocal love and devotion, and the deserving care shared by her children; Isaac C, of Bowne, Truman W., of Algoma; James and Armernelia, of Courtland, Joshua H., of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Mary Jones of Belmont, Rothwell B., of Cadillac, Angelina and Abigail, at the homestead. Also the pride and affection of eighteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Truax of Algoma.

For seventy-two years she was a devoted member of the M.E. Church. Her former pastor in tribute says: "She had a rare intellectual grasp of the rsing isms of the day; and of all the old ladies I ever ministered unto, I never ministered unto a keener intellect or a more clear, analytical mind; thank god for so saintly a mother.

In moments of suffering she would repeat, "no mortal eye hath seen," and passages of scripture as St John 17, verses 9, 10, 15, 16 and 20. Though attended with devotion during her last seven weeks of suffering she longed to be "at rest" saying to her pastor, "what hallelujahs there will be in heaven."

With marked patience she met and won the battles of eighty-six years, among these giving two sons to her country, to face the perils of war, one suffering in Libby Prison.

Peace and good will dominated her life and she passed peacefully away at 1pm on Christmas, 1906. Universally loved yet clothed in saintly beauty amid her loved flowers, her mortal remains were tenderly borne from her late residence by sons and grandsons and laid to rest in the Courtland Cemetery by the side of her husband, who preceded her five years.

Servant of God well done, Thou good and faithful one, The Savior has for thee stoned and prepared a place right near his throne; faithful over a few things here to be, ruler over many things there eternally.
