Here he reared a family of twelve children. The eldest, Eli H. Colby, married Elizabeth Mackey, and settled in the town of Roxbury, Delaware county. Eli's family consisted of eight children, the oldest of whom is Thomas Colby the subject of our present sketch. Thomas Colby was born in the town of Roxbury, Delaware county, on the 23rd of March, 1833, and although he attended none but a common school, yet by perseverance he obtained a good education. At twenty-one he was without worldly means, save the energy and push which he so assiduously cultivated, fired with the zeal, enterprise and thrift so prominently developed later in life, and together with the working capital of a strong arm and determined heart, he decided as he expressed it, to strike out for himself. He bought the farm of 150 acres where he now lives, and soon after added another 100 acres, all of which was in a very low state of cultivation, at the time of his purchase, and would not keep over ten head of cattle. Mr. Colby has so improved it that it now keeps over sixty head, and is one of the best farms in the town of Gilboa. It is situated on the line of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad, which runs in the valley below, but a few hundred yards off. His residence is located in plain view of the Catskill mountains which give it a pleasant and picturesque appearance. He also owns another farm of about 100 acres situated one mile north of his residence, which he works in connection with the home farm. His farms are devoted strictly to dairying, sending milk to the New York market in the winter season and the making of butter and raising of stock during the summer. Mr. Colby's stock is the Jersey, which he thinks is superior to any other for dairy purposes. He is pre-eminently a working man himself, and is always with his hired help, some of whom have been with him for years. In politics he is a Republican, and has been honored with several town offices. He meets his obligations promptly, is a man of few words, considers it beneath his dignity to hold argument with any one, and belongs to no church. Mr. Colby has been twice married, his first wife was Julia S. Decker, by whom he was blessed with three children, all of whom died in infancy. By his second wife he has had two children, Thomas, Jr., and Emma. Mr. Colby is a very conscientious man; his opinions are always fearless and honest, never hesitating to denounce what he believes to be wrong, because others favor it, and never courting popularity at the expense of his honor. Easton Cemetery. COLBY, Thomas Pettigrove ADAMS COUNTY The vast farming interests of Adams County have been prominent factors in the business world of WI, and among those who have spent the greater part of a useful career within the borders of that county, Thomas P. COLBY should be accorded a prominent place. He came to this region with his parents when the land was not yet surveyed, and assisted in bringing the agricultural pursuit to its present high standard in Adams County. Mr. COLBY was engaged in general farming in Quincy Township, and possessed a fine estate comprising 200 acres, all of which he acquired by dint of his own efforts, supplemented by his honest dealings. This he held until lately. He is now a resident of Thorp, WI. Our subject was born in Topsfield, Washington County, ME, 12 Feb 1840, and was the son of Jonathan Corless and Sarah Ann (PETTIGROVE) COLBY. His father was born in Bradford, VT, 02 Oct 1806, and died 23 Jul 1887, at Easton, Adams County, WI. The mother of our subject was born at Calais, ME, 27 Aug 1809, and died at Easton, WI, 09 Jul 1895. The father was a farmer by occupation and settled in Topsfield, ME, where he remained until 1850, when he moved to what is now Easton, Adams County, WI. At that time it was Indian land and not on the market. He was the first settler with land on the banks of White Creek, and his family of five children were the first white children to reside in that region. They were as follows: Thomas (our subject), William (now residing in Clark County), Harriet A. (now Mrs. WATERMAN, of Kilbourn), Lucy (now Mrs. W. EDDY, of Easton), and Mary (now Mrs. F. YORK, of Monroe Centre). Two other children were born as follows: Annie E. (died 20 Apr 1897) and Warren I. (now residing on the old homestead in Easton Township). On his arrival in Easton the father surveyed 160 acres of land and entered a claim, and cleared the land and erected a shanty, into which he moved his family, and remained on the farm until his death. When the township of Easton was organized he was chosen supervisor. He was a man of retiring disposition and did not accept public office. He was a hard worker and accumulated a good estate. He was a consistent member of the United Brethren church, and a man respected by all in the community for his honesty and good citizenship. Thomas P. COLBY was the oldest of the children and of necessity was early put to work to assist in the support of the family. He had gained some schooling before coming to WI, but afterward did not have the opportunity to attend school. He remained with his parents until he reached his majority, when he married, and he and his family resided on land which his wife owned, for 18 years, in Easton Township. In 1878 he purchased 200 acres in Quincy Township, and moved his family to that estate, and he is still living on the farm. Mrs. COLBURN*s maiden name was Louisa GOODRICH. Her parents died when she was but a young girl, and she was adopted by a family by the name of RANEY. At the time of her marriage she was in possession of 100 acres in Easton Township. Her death occurred 18 Jun 1891, aged 64 years. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. COLBY: Francis E. (born 07 Apr 1861, now residing in Thorp, Clark County, WI), Clara A. (born 27 Apr 1862, now Mrs. A. H. GREENWOOD, of Quincy), Daniel G. (born 03 Apr 1864, now a resident of Thorp, Clark County), and Charles L. (born 24 Nov 1867, now residing on the homestead). Charles L. COLBY was married 08 Sep 1890 to Josephine A. MIHM, daughter of Constantine and Margaret MIHM, of Quincy. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. COLBY, as follows: Charles K. (born 13 Mar 1891), George D. (born 11 Apr 1892), and Alfred D. (born 04 Oct 1896). They are an interesting group of boys and complete a pleasing family circle.
