Comment 1:
Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) Father of Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn. Born in North Hampton, N.H., February 23, 1751. U.S. Representative from Massachusetts, 1793-97; U.S. Secretary of War, 1801-09; U.S. Minister to Portugal, 1822-24. Died June 6, 1829. Original interment in unknown location; subsequent interment in 1834 at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass.; reinterment in 1848 at Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston, Mass. Dearborn County, Ind. is named for him.

Comment 2:
DEARBORN, Henry (1751-1829)

Revolutionary War officer/ Secretary of War, 1801-1809/ General in War of 1812.

New Hampshire-born (1751) Henry Dearborn served with distinction during the Revolutionary War, at Bunker Hill, Valley Forge, Saratoga and Yorktown. But as a general during his later years he proved incompetent. By then Dearborn was so fat that he had to travel in a specially built cart. At the start of the Revolution in 1775, Dearborn, then 24, was already a captian of militia. By war's end Dearborn's regiment had won a commendation from Gen. George Washington, who appointed the young officer to his staff in 1781. From 1801-1809 Dearborn served as Secretary of War. At the onset of the WAR of 1812, he was given command of the Army of the North. He led two bungled invasions of Canada in 1812 and 1813 and was relieved of his command in July, 1813. Dearborn's last public service (1822-24) was as American minister to Portugal. He died in 1829.
John Adams, 2nd President - 1797-1801.
Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President - 1801-1809.
James Madison, 4th President - 1809-1817.

Comment 3:
General Henry Dearborn, an early settler of Monmouth, Maine, was one of the primary officers at the Battle of Monmouth and that's why the town was named that. He later became Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson. Still later, during the War of 1812, he was given a command in the northeastern theater of war, he did not perform particularly well (not necessarily his fault) and the war was unpopular with New England maritime interests. General Dearborn was originally from New Hampshire and was a descendant of Godfrey Dearborn, early settler.

Comment 4:
President Washington appointed General Dearborn Marshal for the District of Main in 1789.

General Henry Dearborn was elected to Congress and served from March 4, 1793 to March 4, 1797.

President Jefferson appointed him Secretary of War in 1801, a position he held until March 1809, when he became Collector of the Port of Boston. When the War of 1812 commenced, he was commissioned Major General of the United States Army, under President Madison.

In 1822 President Monroe appointed Major General Henry Dearborn as Minister to Portugal, where he remained for two years.

General in American Revolution.
Secretary of War under President Thomas Jefferson.
Dearborn, Michigan named after Henry Dearborn.
