CONNEAUT — Robert M. Golden, age 87, formerly of Hatches Corners Road, Monroe Township, Ohio, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 26, 2008, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, Kingsville, Ohio.

Born May 1, 1920, in Conneaut, he was the son of Daniel and Mary M. (Truesdale) Golden. A Veteran, Mr. Golden served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was employed at the Nickel Plate Railroad, the New York Central Railroad, and the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, from which he retired in 1980 with 38 years of service.

Since 1941, he was a dedicated member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in East Conneaut. He was a member of the National Wood Carvers Club, the Conneaut Area Historical Society and was an area representative for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a beekeeper and enjoyed gardening, watching and feeding the birds, and traveling in all 50 states, Mexico and Canada.

Mr. Golden is survived by two sons, Robert E. (Brenda) Golden of Conneaut, Ohio, and Stephen (Amy) Golden of Hurricane, W.Va.; two daughters, Mary Evelyn (Paul) Ehrlich of Seattle, Wash., and Sheryll Golden of Cincinnati, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary in 1996; three sisters, Nellie Osborne, Cora Zappitella and Bessie Golden in childhood; and five brothers, Rev. Burton Golden, Thomas, Floyd, George and Fred.

Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, 313 E. Main Road, Conneaut, Ohio, with the Rev. John Dye officiating. Burial will follow in East Conneaut Cemetery.

Friends may call at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, on Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Happy Hearts School or to the Wood Carving Class at the Conneaut Community Center for the Arts. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home and at the church.

Comments: When fifteen years old Lydia was sent to a boarding school in a village where she met Calvin Bailey, to whom she was married in the fall of 1828. This marriage was blessed with two children it was not a happy one. Calvin deserted Lydia three years after they were married.

Lydia became acquainted with the Latter-Day Saints during a visit to Mt. Pleasant, Upper Canada. Joseph Smith and Sydney Rigdon visited the Nickerson family, whom Lydia was staying with, in 1833. After a number of meetings were held, the Nickerson family, Lydia and others were baptised.

When Lydia returned to her father's home in New York State, her relatives did all they could to persuade her to leave "Mormonism." As a result, Lydia decided to move to Kirtland, Ohio, a gathering place for the saints.
