Lewis Crum Bidamon came to Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, in 1846. While serving as a major in the Illinois Militia, he helped defend the town against the Carthage mob. During his service he became acquainted with the widow of Joseph Smith, Jr., and they were married by the Methodist Reverend William Hana in Nauvoo.
Throughout most of his life, Lewis disbelieved the Bible and denied the Sonship of Jesus. However, during a two year illness which lasted until his death, he underwent a change. He concluded that the Bible was the word of God and that Jesus was the Son of God. However, he did not unite with any religious organization. His funeral services were held in the Nauvoo House and he was buried in the family cemetery in Nauvoo. The discourse at his funeral was offered by Joseph Smith III.
