MRS. ELIZABETH COLBY

Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Colby, widow of the late Capt. Nehemiah Colby, passed away Sunday afternoon, Jan. 30, at quarter past three, at her home here, after a short illness of pneumonia. She was 84 years, 6 months and 18 days. She had been in failing health for some time, and for the past three years she had been blind, but for her sight she would have been as active as a young girl.

She was born in Port Sea, England, July 12, 1831, daughter of the late William Thomas, and Elizabeth (Bricknell) Laws. At the age of eighteen, her family started to move to a lot on the Mississippi River, but on the voyage a heavy storm came up, making them unable to finish the trip. They landed at Gaspe Basin, P. Q., where they finally settled down. Mrs. Colby had lived there for ten years, when she met Capt. Nehemiah Colby, and was married August, 1859, after which they came to Westport in the vessel of which Mr. Colby was captain, there they went to housekeeping.

She has made her home here for fifty-six years, during which time she visited her parents only once, in the year 1866. Great many changes had taken place in that time, since then she has only seen two of her brothers.

She was one of a family of eleven children, of which there are three survivors, two brothers and one sister, Edward Laws of Magog, P. Q., Thomas Laws of North McGregor, Iowa, and Mrs. Isabel Eden of Gaspe Basin, P. Q. Mrs. Colby leaves two daughters, Mrs. Genevieve H. Higgins and Mrs. Sarah Welch of this place and seven grandchildren besides eight great grandchildren. She was a kind mother and a good neighbor.

Funeral services were held at her late home Wednesday afternoon, at one o'clock, Rev. Chester Jameson officiated. The floral tributes were most beautiful, the gifts of the following relatives, bouquet of white pinks from her daughter, Mrs. G. H. Higgins; a bouquet of ferns and pinks inscribed, "Grandma", from her grandson, Archie Higgins; a pillow inscribed "Grandma" from her granddaughter, Mrs. Ethel Wass. The bearers were Solomon Higgins, Adams Welch, James Colby and Melvin Cromwell. Interment was in the family lot, Westport.

When she met Capt. Nehemiah Colby, and was married August, 1859

She was buried in the Colby Cemetery at Westport, Lincoln County, Maine She was a native of England, born at Port Sea. 7 children, all born at Westport, Maine.

Elizabeth had a brother John P. Colby who lived at 21 Franklin St., Newburyport, MA. Apparently on February 2, 1909 while visiting at the home of John P. There were newspaper articles about this tragedy in the Lynn Item. Bert Colby Leadbetter was buried in Pinegrove Cemetery, Lynn, MA
