Edward Marshall, the war correspondent who was wounded at Las Guasimas, the first engagement in Cuba in which the Rough Riders participated, has finally lost a leg. The amputation took place yesterday in Miss Alston's private hospital, 141 West Forty-seventh street, and was performed by Dr. Walsh, assisted by Drs. Edson and Lenahan. The operation was made necessary because paralysis had begun slowly to creep up the left leg, and in order to retard its progress amputation of that portion of the limb from about eight inches below the knee was necessary. Mr. Marshall was wounded in the spine and at the time both legs were paralzed. His courage and indomitable will alone restored him to health. Dr. Abbe of St. Luke's hospital performed an operation on him after he had been brought home from Cuba and this restored to him the use of his legs. Last September he was able to get around with the use of crutches. Several months ago he went to The Hague to cover the Peace Conference and later visited Paris, where he suffered with rheumatism. Since then he slowly declined. Yesterday he walked up two flights of stairs, aided by his crutches, and climbed alone to the operating table. When he was told later of the success of the operation he simply smiled and thanked doctors. =========================== Parents: Davis Chester MARSHALL and Algiana R. OSBORN. Eliza C.
