Nelson Reed McKee, was born 2 February 1837 in New Carlisle, Clark County, Ohio. [son of John McKee, Jr. b. Feb. 13, 1804 in Virginia; d. July 12, 1855 in Eel River, IN -and- on April 19, 1826 in Champaign County, Ohio, married Martha Lansdale, b. 1799 in Maryland, dtr of Thomas and Ann Lansdale; d. Jan. 17, 1839 in Eel River, IN.] By trade a jeweler and watch repairman, he married Sarah Ann Sunderland in 14 Aug 1859 in Fort Wayne, IN. By the late 1870s, he and Sarah were living in Portland, in Jay County, Indiana. In about 1878, they moved to Monticello, in White County, Indiana. He established himself in business there.
They had 3 children: Florence E. McKee, b. Nov. 19, 1862, d. Nov. 9, 1942; Benjamin F. McKee, b. Jan. 4, 1865, d. Sept. 25, 1890; and, Charles P. McKee, b. March 10, 1872, d. Nov. 16, 1899. Nelson abandoned Sarah and children June 1, 1879, moved to Wisconsin and assumed the name of Nelson R. McCuren.
On the night of Saturday, May 31, 1879, Nelson Reed McKee disappeared, leaving his wife and three children, daughter Florence Elizabeth, age 17, Benjamin Franklin ("Frank"), 14, and Charles Preston, 6, with no idea of his whereabouts. According to the Monticello Herald of Thursday, June 5, 1879, Nels McKee had "brought with him [from Portland] the best of recommendations, and up to the date of his disappearance had maintained an unblemished character, and even now public sentiment is loth to charge him with any evil intentions." The newspaper goes on to say that he was "financially embarrassed" but does not give any details of that. It also hints that there may have been a question of forgery of a public document:
"The fact was developed next morning [Sunday, June 1] that a deed and mortgage purporting to be executed by N. R. McKee and wife, had been sent from Portland, this state, to the clerk of this county for his certificate of the official standing of the officer by whom the acknowledgements were taken. The acknowledgements were signed 'H. V. Bennet, J.P.' and were dated May 16 -- one day prior to the date in the body of the instruments. The clerk showed the papers to H. V. Bennet, J.P., who denied having taken any such acknowledgements, and Mr. McKee, upon being confronted with the papers, gave no satisfactory explanation, but seemed confused and annoyed. He is reported to have been low-spirited all day Saturday, and was very uncommunicative even to his family upon the subject of his trouble." That night, he took off.
The story does not end there.
In late 1880, advertisements appeared in the Weekly Herald, Clinton, Wisconsin: "All kinds of clocks, watches, jewelery and spectacles repaired and warranted, by N. McCuren." Research has revealed that N. McCuren was indeed Nelson Reed McKee, who had fled to Wisconsin and established himself there. Later, he reverted to his real name, and under that name married Ida Josephine Colby 1 August 1880.
Problem was, he was still married to Sarah Ann Sunderland.
It wasn't until 1882 that Sarah Ann Sunderland took action and consulted an attorney firm, which placed in the National, "a public weekly newspaper of general circulation printed and published in this County," a legal notice of a filing for divorce. The notice was first placed in the National on 22 April 1882 and last on 13 May 1882; the final notice stated that Nelson McKee had not responded: ". . . thereupon he is three times called and comes not but makes default." On November 16, 1882, the Monticello Herald published a small notice that "Mrs. Sarah A. McKee has been granted a divorce from her husband, N. R. McKee, on the ground of desertion, and she has been awarded the custody of the children."
There is a further complication to all this, leading to questions of who knew what and when did they know it. Did Sarah know that Nelson had turned up in Wisconsin and remarried? Did she file for divorce not only to free herself to marry again (which she eventually did), but also to release Nelson from a threat of prosecution for bigamy? These questions arise when we consider that Sarah's sister Mary was married to Nelson's brother William, and we have to wonder whether there was any communication.
