Jens NIELSEN was born on 3 MAR 1824 in Bjoldstrup, Randers, Denmark. He served in the military about 1847 in Denmark. He immigrated about 1863 from Denmark to Utah. He died on 11 OCT 1892 at Gunnison, Sanpete County, Utah. He was buried on 14 OCT 1892 in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah. AN ACCOUNT OF JENS NIELSEN
By Royal Homer Hansen (1932)

Jens Nielsen was born 3 March 1824, at Bjodstrup, Randers, Denmark. He was married when he heard the Gospel, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and immigrated to Utah in 1863. His wife died either on the ocean or when crossing the plains.

He went to Manti and there he married Catherine Frieland who was born 7 February 1838, at Sallerstrup, Maribo, Denmark. Later they traveled to Salt Lake City and were sealed to each other in the Endowment House.

They had the following children all born at Manti, Sanpete County, Utah:
Andrew, born 30 April 1866, died 1868;
Anna Margaret, born 15 March 1868, married Hans C. Hansen, Jr.;
Trena, born 30 March 1870, married Andrew C. Andersen;
James, born 18 May 1872, married Effie F. Andersen;
Francis Franklin, born 25 April 1875, Married Martha Amelia Casson;
David, born 14 December 1877, married Mary C.O. Petersen;
Louis, born 2 May 1882, married 1) Ruby Alice Dickersen, 2) Laura Goins (Div),
3) Mellie Boyd.

Jens was a blacksmith by trade and after moving to Manti, he went in partnership with a Mr. Doomguard until he earned enough to set up a shop of his own. Jens and Mr. Doomguard made the first horsepowerer to be used in Sanpete County, using any kind of iron they could get a hold of. The cogs on the master wheel were made and then riveted on the band.

Jens owned a piece of land in an old field at the southwest corner of Manti. He also owned a farm in part of what is now the Gunnison Reservoir. Jens sold his land in the field and used the money to secure a team of oxen. Taking his daughter Anna, and his son David, and his wife, Jens traveled to Deseret in Millard County, and secured a piece of land. It was very hard work breaking up this land, planting grain, making ditches, and watering the crops using the dike system. While at Deseret the family had a sort of adobe wall with a carpet hung over the top for a roof. This served as a house while they were breaking up and seeding the land.

The family returned to Manti after the planting was finished by way of Leamington. Night overtook them and it was with great difficulty that they kept the oxen on the road as they were very thirsty and wanted to get to the water for a drink. The Sevier River was very close.

Jens and his daughter made another trip to the farm at Deseret and while there he traded off his oxen. The man who got the oxen never did pay for them. Jens secured a team of horses and returned again to Manti. When he thought that the grain ought to be ripe he again went to the farm near Deseret. Upon arriving there he discovered that somebody had already cut his grain. Being very much disheartened by this act of robbery, Jens did not even try to find out who had cut his grain. He packed his belongings in his wagon, left the farm, and returned to Manti. Jens abandoned the farm at Deseret and lost what he had invested there.

Another time Jens made a trip to Southern Utah, taking his daughter, Anna, and traveling as far south as Circle Valley. At Marysvale there was a dance in progress and upon learning that Jens could play the violin, the townsfolk offered him $2.50 to play for them. This he did, giving Anna 50¢ if she would let him go, for she was just getting over the measles. The dance was held in a one room log building and Anna sat in one corner of the building during the dance. Jens would play for dances in Mayfield, Gunnison and other nearby towns. He played a violin and bass horn and was in the First String Instrument band in Manti. Also, playing the horn in the other hand.

Jens served in the Black Hawk War with the Indians in Utah. In 1847 he served in the Danish Army in the war with Germany. He was a dispatch carrier and during his service he had three horses shot from under him. On one occasion the cannon ball went through his horse and into a barn, hitting and killing a cow that a young girl was milking. The girl was not injured. On another occasion he was at the cannon when the Germans charged their positions seven times in one night. They were repulsed each time with heavy losses. The Danish soldiers loaded some of their cannons with chains and when they were fired the chain spread out causing terrible havoc among the enemy. After he had been in Utah some time he received a medal for bravery from the Danish Government for his honorable service in the war with Germany.

After Anna was married, Jens lived with her until his death on 11 October 1892. He was afflicted with rheumatics and suffered a great deal from them. There were times when he could not shoe a horse so he would make and fit the shoes and then the owners could nail them on. Jens died at Anna's home located about three quarters of a mile southwest of the Gunnison Depot. He was buried in the Manti City Cemetery.
