Mrs. Abigail Colby

Abigail Colby, daughter of Abijah and Thankful Smith, was born at Johnson, Vt., on the 25th of December, 1825, and died at Crystal Lake, July 10, 1907.

Mrs. Colby was married to Webster Colby, Feb. 2, 1843. Four children were born of this marriage - Emma, Edgar (deceased), Smith and Clarence.

Webster Colby crossed the plains to California in 1849, returning in November of the same year by the way of the isthmus and the Gulf of Mexico, but died on the steamer before its arrival at New Orleans.

On April 27, 1855, Mrs. Colby was united in marriage to Albert Colby, a younger brother of her former husband.

To this union were born three children - Minnie, Lillian and Fred L. Mr. Colby -preceded his wife to the better land about five months, and was so greatly missed that Mrs. Colby was often heard to say that she longed to go and join him.

Mrs. Colby was a devoted wife and mother, in her days of activity doing much good for the poor and alienating the sufferings of those about her.

She was greatly interested in the work of temperance, and aided as much as was in her power this great movement. There was much in her life to emulate and truly it shall be said, "her good works shall follow her."

The funeral services were held from the late home last Friday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. A. C. Heyman of the Congregational church, and the mortal remains were laid to rest in the Union cemetery.

After a long, busy and useful life she died as she had lived - honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument while she lived, in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was completed, if work all done and well done constitutes completion. Her Christian life was beautiful from its beginning to its close, and through all the vicissitudes and sorrows that she met in the way, her faith in God never wavered. But she has left us and sleeps peacefully in the grave that hides from our sight all that is mortal of a true and noble woman.

She was buried in the Union Cemetery at Crystal Lake, McHenry County, Illinois

Son of Joseph Smith, Jr., and Emma Hale
Married: Elizabeth Agnes Kendall, 23 May 1861, Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois

Alexander Hale Smith inherited "his father's blue eyes and ruddy complexion." He received common schooling in the public schools at Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. He became religiously inclined after the death of his brother Frederick. Alexander was concerned about the state of unbaptized souls and was comforted by the Spirit, saying, "Grieve not; Frederick's condition is pleasant; and the time shall come when baptism can be secured to him." He was satisfied of the necessity of baptism for the living, and was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 25 May 1862 in Nauvoo by Joseph Smith III. He was confirmed by Joseph Smith III and Nathan Foster. Alexander was ordained a teacher on 7 September 1862 in Nauvoo by Joseph Smith III, Israel L. Rogers, and John Shippy; a priest on 30 March 1864 by J. Shippy; and an elder on 8 April 1863 at Amboy, Lee, Illinois. Alexander served a mission to western Iowa with W. W. Blair. He was ordained a high priest on 12 April 1866 at Plano, Kendall, Illinois, by Joseph Smith III and Jason W. Briggs. He crossed the plains by wagon with Wm. Anderson and James Gillen. He served in the California mission for 21 months before serving in Utah in 1870.
Alexander was ordained an apostle on 10 April 1873 in Plano by Jason W. Briggs, Joseph Smith III, and William W. Blair. He served a mission to the Pacific Slope in 1875 with David H. Smith. He then labored in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas, until he returned to the Pacific Slope in 1885. Alexander later served in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Manitoba. He was ordained president of the Quorum of the Twelve on 15 April 1890 at Lamoni, Decatur, Iowa, by Joseph Smith III and William W. Blair. He served in the Rocky Mountain mission in 1892 and in the eastern states in 1893. He was called to be a counselor to his brother, Joseph Smith III, and also a patriarch and evangelical minister on 12 April 1897 by Joseph Smith III. He went on a mission to Australia, Hawaii, and the Society Islands in 1901. He served in these offices until 1902, when he was released from being a counselor, but continued to be the Presiding Patriarch and evangelical minister from 1897 to 1909.
Alexander was a partner in a photograph gallery before becoming a carpenter.

Asael SMITH II was born on 21 MAY 1773 in Windham, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He died on 21 JUL 1844 at Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois.
Smith, Asahel, the fourth presiding Patriarch of the Church, was the son of Asahel Smith and Mary Duty, and brother of Joseph Smith, senior, the Prophet's father. He was born May 21, 1773, in Windham, Rockingham county, N. H., and married Betsy Schillinger March 21, 1802. In 1809 he settled in St. Lawrence county, N.Y. When Joseph Smith, sen., accompanied by his son Don Carlos, visited his father and brother in St. Lawrence county, in August, 1830, Asahel received his testimony, and though he was not baptized till 1835, he became (from the time of this visit of his brother Joseph) a warm advocate of the Book of Mormon and the restoration of the everlasting gospel, for which he received much abuse from his brother Jesse. He was baptized by Lyman E. Johnson June 29, 1835, in Stockholm, St. Lawrence county, New York, and removed with his family to Kirtland, Ohio, in 1836. Soon after his arrival there he was ordained a High Priest by Don Carlos Smith, and in 1837 he became a member of the High Council at Kirtland. He was chosen to fill a similar position in Lee county, Iowa, when a Stake of Zion was organized there Oct. 5, 1839, and served in that capacity until Jan. 6, 1842, when the Stake organization in Iowa was discontinued. During this time Brother Smith resided at Nashville, Iowa. He was ordained a Patriarch by the Twelve Apostles in Nauvoo, Ill., Oct. 7, 1844, and after the rejection of William Smith (his nephew) in 1845, the patriarchal office, according to the hereditary order, belonged to Asahel Smith; but as his health was poor, he is not known to have taken any active part in the office of presiding Patriarch. He died July 20, 1848, at Iowaville, Wapello county, Iowa, en route for the West. The following is recorded about him in Church history: "His principles, precepts and examples were worthy of imitation, and shed a lustre that does honor to his high and holy calling; he died after a long and painful illness, and has left a numerous family to mourn his loss."
