His father, Elijah Stout, had willed him in 1860, the farm on which he then resided, together with contiguous out-lots comprising one lot of ten acres, one of twenty acres of woodland, and one of chestnut-wood lot of two and one-half acres. He and his family are enumerated in the censuses of Mercer County, New Jersey, where he is shown in the 1860 census, Volume 11 (reverse of page 633); the 1870 census (Volume 11, on page 224); and the census of 1880. His name is enumerated as Alexander Stout and Alexander T. Stout, respectively, evidently the form he preferred. His wife, Lucy, is enumerated as born in New Hampshire, of parents born in the same state. All children, withe the exception of the first born, who was born in Ohio, are enumerated as born in New Jersey. In 1860, there were living with him Rebecca Stout, 15 years old, (his niece) the daughter of Nathaniel Stout, and John Van Pelt, (his nephew) and son of his sister Emeline Van Pelt. In the 1860 census, his real estate is shown as $8,000, and personal estate as $2,000. By 1870, the census shows his real estate had increased to $18,000, and his personal estate to $3,000. William was employed by the Post Office Department, and was one of the original letter carriers appointed by Postmaster Hudnut when free delivery service was established at Princeton, New Jersey. His name, with those of Frank C. McKaig and Nelson W. Titus, is recorded on "Journal 6, No. 104-A, P.O.D., Post offices and Letter Carriers, 11 February 1890 to 2 July 1890." On "Register of Letter Carriers (1st Class Offices), Post Office Department, 1900," on page 83, the name of William C. Stout appears on the date 1 July 1890, under the heading "Letter Carriers, Princeton, New Jersey," indicated as "New Service." It is further shown that he was appointed letter carrier at $600 per annum and was promoted on 1 July 1891 to $850 per annum. Further notation is made for all employees, that "Blanket Bond and Oath Received 1 April 1899." Before his service in the Post Office Department he had managed the family farm. He had a great interest in astronomy. By a deed dated 19 April 1902, he purchased lots on Wiggins Street, in Princeton, New Jersey, on which he built two semi-detached houses. William was a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church in Princeton, New Jersey, and occupant of Pew 13. His daughter has a hymnal which belonged to her father bearing this pew number, and also has a calendar of the church of 13 May 1906, which lists him as a deacon.
