ABRAHAM TAYLOR Provides nails to build Provo Tabernacle.

Abraham was the oldest son of Thomas and Ann Ball Taylor. He immigrated to Utah with his parents, his wife, Hannah Varney (born 27 September 1823), and their five children.

They left Liverpool, England on April 23, 1862, on the sailing vessel, "John J. Boyd," the same ship which carried David O. McKay's parents. The voyage took eight weeks and three days on the ocean. During the voyage a terrific storm arose, which caused great alarm among the passengers and crew. To lessen their fears and uncertainty, Captain John J. Boyd told all those aboard that he had no misgivings as to their safety as long as there were Mormon missionaries aboard. The ship arrived in New York on June 1, 1862 in safety. However, on its return trip, the ship ran into an iceberg and the vessel with all on board was lost. The Taylors crossed the plains with ox teams and arrived in Springville October 6, 1862.

Thomas Taylor was a nailmaker by trade in England. When he came to Springville, he built a foundry on the back lot of his house on about 600 East Center. Abraham took over the business after his father's death on January 23, 1865. It is said in the history of the old White Meeting House that the nails used in that building were made by Abraham Taylor. Many of them were made from old wagon tires that had been driven across the plains. His nails were used in homes and businesses in Springville. They were also used in the construction of the Provo Tabernacle. Some of his nails are on display in the Springville Museum of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

Abraham built a log home for his family. It had two large rooms downstairs with a loft where all of them slept at night. He dug a room underneath the log home where they kept foods for winter use. Besides the nail foundry, Abraham bought the Oak Hill Farm near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon in Mapleton several miles from his home. While driving to the farm one day in a wagon, the horses ran away and he fell out of the wagon. After that accident, and since he had never been around horses in England, he would not drive the team again. His sons, Jabez and Hyrum, did the driving to the farm while Abraham would walk all the way.

In 1866 the Black Hawk War broke out. Hannah would pull her children out of bed during the night, and she would drag him along by the hand with his brother and sisters, telling them not to cry or the Indians would get them on their way to the fort.

Abraham's children helped him on the farm and at the foundry. They attended the first school house in Springville on 200 East and 100 North. Abraham couldn't always get shoes for his children so he would wrap their feet in gunny sacks. Jabez would jump in and out of the ditch on the way to school to keep his feet from freezing.

Abraham and Hannah were very happy in their life together. Abraham was known as a kind man who was always ready to share what he had with those less fortunate. His mother, Ann Ball, died January 30, 1869. His parents are buried in the Springville City Cemetery. Stone markers from the Derby Pottery in England were placed to mark the graves.

Hannah died March 9, 1885. Abraham married Selena Rogers. He died December 11, 1893.
