He served on the destroyer USS Converse where he received 12 battle stars from the Battle of Vella LaVella to the Battle of Siapan. He served on the USS General Mann during the Korean conflict. He returned to Wellington where he married Margie Ruth Colby on Oct. 11, 1947, later divorced. He worked as an automobile salesman for various dealerships until his retirement at the age of 72. He was a long time member of the Carbon County Sheriff's Posse and loved riding horses.
He is survived by his children, Jim (Patricia) Thayn of New Castle, Colorado; Kathleen (James) Gregory of Salt Lake City; Jeff (Kim) Thayn of Riverton; Carol Anne Thayn and Craig Melendez of Sacramento;
11 grand-children and one great-grandchild. Also survived by brothers, Milton, Lon and John and sisters, Thelma Pierce, Georgia Mott and Lenna Beth Jones and longtime friend and companion Donna Gerhardt. Preceded in death by brothers William and Robert and sister Reva.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price where friends may call one hour prior to services. Fausett Mortuary will remain open Wed. until 9 p.m. for those who would wish to sign the register. Burial will be in the Wellington Cemetery.

BURLINGTON - Alma M. Colby, 57, died on Thursday, May 20, 2004, in Fletcher Allen Health Care after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on May 17, 1947, to Catherine (Greenia) Pratt in Swanton.
She was married to Michael J. Colby in Burlington on March 19, 1978.
She was previously employed at St. Michael's College for many years.
Alma was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She especially enjoyed her time spent with her family.
Alma was a member of the Women's Auxiliary to Howard Plant Post 782, Veterans of Foreign Wars, where she had many close friends.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Colby of Burlington, daughter Debbie Cross and her husband, Rich, son Kelly Thibault and his wife, Donna, son Donald Thibault, daughter Melissa Haire and her husband, John, daughter Lee Ann Spear, and son Michael Colby and his wife, Pammy; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Chandler and her husband, Fred; two brothers, Ronald Pratt and his wife Cheryl, Robert Pratt and his wife Pam; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at the Ready Funeral Home, South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington, on Saturday, May 22, at 11 a.m. with burial to follow in Fort Ethan Allen Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral Home, South Chapel. In Alma's memory donations may be sent to the American Cancer Association, 11 Loomis St., Montpelier, VT 05602.
