Donald L. Tillotson
World War II veteran
CONCORD - Donald "Tilly" L. Tillotson, 83, of Conant Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, surrounded by his family at Concord Hospital, after battling pancreatic cancer.
Don was born July 17, 1926, in Springfield, Mass., to Charles L. and Nellie (Eastman) Tillotson. He graduated from Concord High School in 1944, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a veteran of World War II and served three years in the New Hampshire National Guard as part of the 197th Battery A of the 744.
After serving, Don worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad for 16 years. For the next 32 years, he was employed as an engineer for the city of Concord. During that time, he was also a registered land surveyor. Following his retirement in 1992, he went back to work for the city of Concord in general services as a paving inspector for seven years.
Don enjoyed long distance running as a member of the Turtle Town Athletic Club in Concord, competing in many races. Some of his proudest moments included running the Boston Marathon at 56 years old and the Mount Washington Road Race several times in his early 60s, as well as being featured in Runner's World.
He was predeceased by an infant grandson, Ryan; and three sisters, Betty, Joyce and Gloria.
Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betsy (Colby) Tillotson; four children, Douglas Tillotson, Susan Gilmore, Sarah MacGregor and Martha Schofield; eight grandchildren, including Brett, Joshua, Heidi, Kristi, R.J., Mark and Maggie; and two siblings, Beverly and Melvin.
A private memorial service will be held at the family's convenience.
Arrangements are under the direction of Phaneuf Funeral Home, King Street, Boscawen.
