Vannest, James C., son of John Vannest, born in Washington, Warren county, N. J., November 10, 1802; came to Rochester in 1826, where he lived about a year, then moved to Ogden, where he cleared up a farm, having married Lucy Grunendike of Chili, September 26, 1827, who died January 3, 1858. Their children were John, Sarah and Henry. For his second wife, he married Almira McMaster, of Burgh Hill, Ohio, April 9, 1862, and moved to Ogden Center, where she died December 18, 1869, and he June 27, 1890. He and all his family have been active members of the Ogden Presbyterian church. John, born Aug. 1, 1828, married Cornelia Pratt of Batavia, December 17, 1852, settled on a farm adjoining his father's and died January 12, 1890, survived by his wife and two daughters, Ella C. and S. Lucretia (Mrs. Alex. Colby), Ada C. and James P. having died in childhood. Sarah, born January 30, 1831, was active during the Civil war in work of the Soldiers' Aid Society, after which she spent two years in Georgia, teaching in colored schools, and since then has lived at Ogden Center, having cared for her father in his declining years. Henry, born March 15, 1834, has always lived on the home farm. He married Julia E. Keney of West Hartford. Conn., November 25, 1858, who died July 5, 1861, married Anna L. Drake of Greece, October 31, 1866. Their children are Charles H., of Rochester, Frank D. and Fred G. (twins), at home.

Margaret D. Colby, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at the Willows Nursing and Rehab Center, Sun Prairie.

She was born on April 29, 1921, in DeForest, the daughter of Benjamin and Hilda (Nelson) Vedvik.

Margaret was united in marriage to Kenneth Colby on Aug. 10, 1947, in DeForest, and they enjoyed more than 56 years of marriage until his death on Feb. 7, 2004.

Mrs. Colby was a lifelong resident of the area.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Madison.

In her spare time she enjoyed bingo and doing crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her children, Larry (Jane Becker) Churchill of Endeavor, Linda (John) Riek of Sun Prairie, Jerome (Carol) Churchill of Windsor, Francis "Frank" Churchill of Madison, Douglas (Susan) Colby of Poynette, and Diane (Ronald) Bebout of Colona, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Kenneth, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Churchill; brothers, James, Nelson, Jerome and Sidney; and sister, Henrietta Anderson.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the CRESS FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, with the Rev. Mary Pharmer officiating.

Burial will be held in Norway Grove Cemetery, DeForest. Visitation will be held on Friday at the funeral home from noon until the time of service.

John Veenschoten, age 85, of Erie passed away Friday, February 20, 2009, at his residence.
He was born in Erie on December 17, 1923, the son of Vincent V. and Lillian Colby Veenschoten.

John attended Harding Elementary School and graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1942. He enrolled at the University of Montana that year and completed one half year before enlisting in the Army Air Force in Butte, Montana. He was assigned to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he received training in radio operation and then to gunnery school in Las Vegas. He was assigned to MacDill Field in Tampa, FL, where he received his phase training in B-17 bombers. The crew was sent overseas as a replacement to the 398th Bomb Group, 603rd squadron of the First air wing of the 8th air force. John completed 30 combat missions over Europe, receiving six air medals and the Bronze Star among other awards.

Returning after the war he married his childhood sweetheart. Muriel Crooks, and attended the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University. Graduating in 1949, he returned to Erie to open "The Sportsman" a sporting goods business with stores in the West Erie Plaza, the Liberty Plaza and at Peek-n- Peak resort. Closing the business after 20 years, he entered the fine arts and antiques business and sold at top shows in major cities all over the South and East. Many fine and valuable antiques passed through John's hands during that period and he became nationally known for his selection of American period furniture, American paintings and antique weapons among other items.

John served over twenty five years as a founding director of the Erie Zoological Society, often in the capacity of curator of animals. He designed the original pixie land at the Zoo. He was on the retail board of the Head and Ski Co. and was nominated to the board of the National Sporting Goods Association. He was a member and director of the Aviation Club and a member of the Erie Yacht Club. He also was a former member of the Kahkwa Club and the Maennerchor Club and founded the original Presque Isle Gun Collectors Club in 1950. The club is still in existence.

In 1985 he retired to his beloved Sanibel Island where he and Muriel soon became very involved volunteers. John was a member of the City of Sanibel's Wildlife Committee where he served two years as chairman. He also served on the Historical Committee as co-chairman and chairman of the Historical Village Site. He formed a group of men known as the Hammerheads who completely restored seven old buildings at the site. He also served over twelve years as a planning commissioner for the city. In 1999, COTI awarded him the "citizen of the year."

John was an avid bird and big game hunter and made "the trip of a lifetime" to hunt in Africa. He also loved fishing and building ship models in his spare time. He was a collector of early toy soldiers, antique guns and old canes.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, William Edwin Veenschoten of Birmingham, Alabama.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel, and three daughters; Judith Shipman and her husband, William of Manchester by the Sea, MA., Susan Veenschoten of Erie and Marcia Tershel and her husband Paul of Canonsburg, Pa. He is further survived by his grandchildren: William Shipman and his wife Noor of Roxbury, MA, Kathryn Colby Tershel of Canonsburg, PA, as well as by Elizabeth Kelsey and Sara Ellen Tershel both of Canonsburg, PA. He also leaves a brother; David Van Veenschoten of Naples, FL and several nieces, nephews and his cousin Joan Cotter of Erie.

No calling hours will be observed. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 2 pm at Wayside Presbyterian Church, 1208 Asbury Rd. Erie, Pa. 16505 with Rev. James H. Haas officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Erie Zoological Society, PO Box 3268 Erie, Pa. 16508-0268 or to the charity of one's choice.
