Three Thomas Carters

The three Thomases in question seem to be: (1) Reverend Thomas Carter of Woburn, (2) Thomas Carter of Salisbury, and (3) Thomas Carter the Blacksmith of Charleston. Other points of interest include wives' surnames, as each Thomas married a Mary.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ginnie Flanders writes: The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, by Sybil Noyes, Charles T. Libby and Walter G. Davis gives this information: Three separate Thomas's

1. Thomas Carter, Blacksmith, 1st wife Hannah, 2nd wife Mary, no daughter Abigail

2. Thomas Carter, servant to George Giddings, came in the Planter in 1635. Settled at Salisbury. Wife Mary. His will dated Oct 30, prob. Nov 14, 1676 Children:
Mary b. Oct 6, 1641 (m. Joseph Lancaster)
Martha b. Feb 1645
Martha b. Mar 1647
Elizabeth b. April 1649 •John b. May 18, 1650
Abigail b. Feb 1652 (m. Stephen Flanders)
Samuel b. Oct. 25, 1656
Sarah (m. John Davis)

3. Rev. Thomas Carter, b. about 1608, wife Mary children:
Samuel
Judith
Theophilus

Thomas
Timothy

Also, I do not have a copy, but did get a message from a fellow researching stating the the book Pioneers of Massachusetts lists and explains the three different Thomas Carters. The blacksmith, the one on the Planter and Rev. Thomas Carter.

And then the book The Decsendants of Thomas Carter lists all of Rev. Thomas's children. His daughter Abigail was born Jan 10, 1649 and married John Smith. Thus she was not my Abigail. This book goes on to say (I am sorry I only have copies of a few pages, but perhaps you have more.) Rev. Thomas was the son of James Carter, yeoman of Hinderclay. and then says:

"Early genealogists not unnaturally assumed that the Rev. Thomas Carter was identical with the Thomas Carter who embarked at London April 2, 1635, on board the Planter, Nicholas Trerice, master, with a number of others from St. Albans, Hertfordshire, bound for New England. Later investigations, however, show quite conclusively that the Thomas Carter who came over on the Planter settled in Salisbury, Mass., although his age as given in the record of the Planter, twenty-five, corresponds exactly with that of the Rev. Thomas Carter as calculated from the record of his death, Sept. 5, 1874, "in the 74th year of his life.

This statement, however, like many early records of age at time of death, is very likely incorrect, but it is an unfortunate fact for the investigator that there were among the early settlers no fewer than four Thomas Carters,-- three of them in New England , --all arriving about the same time and all of about the same age. These are: (1) Rev. Thomas Carter, first minister of Woburn, Mass.; (2) Thomas Carter of the Planter who settled in Salisbury, Mass., (3) Thomas Carter, eldest son of Thomas Carter, blacksmith, of Charlestown, who deposed, 1662, that he was about fifty-two years old, and hence born about 1610; and (4) Thomas Carter, aged twenty-five who enbarked from London on the SAFETY, Aug 10 1635, for Virginia, etc."

------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to Banks' "Planters of the Commonwealth" the Thomas Carter who came on the Planter (arr. Boston June 7, 1635) was age 25 and a servant. In as much as there was a paucity of institutions of higher learning in NE in 1635, I would doubt that this was the Rev.

The above Thomas seems to have been a servant of George Giddings, destined for Ipswich.

Hoyt, Early Families of Salisbury and Amesbury refers to that Thomas as "planter" and says "perhaps of Ipswich first." He references a Thomas Carter who was made a freeman in Ipswich 2 May 1638 also another 9 March 1636-7. Also in Ipswich in March 1638-9, the General Court granted a lot to Thomas Carter, his master testifying to his good service.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE THREE THOMAS AND MARY CARTER FAMILIES

In Massachusetts during the mid-1600s there were three Thomas Carters, each with a wife Mary. This has led to a great amount of confusion, and it is obvious that many errors have unwittingly been committed by persons researching one or more of the families.

The three Thomases were: (1) the Reverend Thomas Carter, first minister of Woburn; (2) Thomas Carter, a blacksmith of Charlestown and: (3) Thomas Carter, a planter (farmer) at Salisbury from 1639 until his death in 1676. The latter Thomas is my 7th great-grandfather and I have been researching the family for nearly thirty years.

Before continuing -- the following material is what seems most likely to be accurate, but there are many sources of data and numerous conflicts in that information. It will not be difficult to find authors whose writings disagree with some of the following statements, but it is believed these are the best - - and most nearly accurate -- facts presently available. Any material proving or disproving anything contained in this work is most welcome.

I. THE REV. THOMAS CARTER OF WOBURN, MA.

Probably, the Rev. Thomas Carter was a son of John Carter, a yeoman in the village of Hinderclay, Suffolk County, England. He is said to have been baptized there on 3 July 1608. He was educated at St. John's College, at the University of Cambridge, where he received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1629 and the Master of Arts in 1633. Some authorities believe him to be the Thomas Carter, age 25, who embarked at London aboard the Planter on 2 April 1635, bound for Boston, disguised as a servant of George Giddings. At that time in England it was difficult for educated persons to be permitted to emigrate. However, others believe this was the Thomas of Salisbury, partly because George Giddings sealed in Ipswich, MA, and the Thomas Carter, later at Salisbury, was an inhabitant of Ipswich in 1639. Apparently, there is no record showing the Reverend Carter ever having been in Ipswich.

The Rev. Carter was first recorded at Dedham, MA in 1636. Shortly afterward he was at Watertown, where he joined the church and was engaged in the religious services there. He was invited to Woburn, preached there for the first time on 6 December 1641, and was ordained 22 November 1642. He remained as minister at that place until his death on 5 September 1684.

While at Watertown he married Mary Parkhurst, daughter of George Parkhurst (others believe his wife was Mary Dalton), and they had eight children:

1. Samuel, born 8 Aug 1640, graduated from Harvard, married Eunice Brooks,
had eight children. He died in 1693.
2. Judith. Marr. (1) Samuel Convors 1662; m. (2) Giles Fifield 1672. Died 1676.
3. Theophilus. Died young.
4. Mary, born 24 July 1648, m. (1) John Wyman (killed by Indians), m.
(2) Nathaniel Bachiler. She had 8 children, and died 1688.
5. Abigail, born 10 Jan 1649-50. Married John Smith, and died before 1684.
6. Deborah, died young.
7. Timothy, born 12 June 1653. Married Anna Fisk 1680, and died 1727.
8. Thomas, born 8 June 1655. Married Margery Whitmore, had 13 children.

Much documentation on the Rev. Carter and his descendants may easily be found, especially in The History of Woburn, Massachusetts, and in Descendants of Samuel Carter.

II.THOMAS CARTER, BLACKSMITH OF CHARLESTOWN.

(I have researched Thomas Carter of Salisbury, my immigrant ancestor, and the Rev,. Thomas of Woburn in an effort to determine which was the person who came on the Planter in 1635. I had very little interest in the Carter at Chariestown so don't have much information. The following is from Pioneers of Massachusetts, Pope ..... pwc.)

Thomas, blacksmith, Chariestown, admitted to the church 8 (11) 1636, freeman March 9, 1636-37. Constable 1640. Wife Hannah admitted to the church 2 (7) 1639; second wife, Mary, admired to the church 4 (9) 1643. Children: Anna, born 10 (1), bapt. 22 (1) 1640, (mart. Wm. Green.), Elizabeth, born 22 (2) 1641, buried 12 (5) 1644. Son John deposed 4 (2) 1660, aged about 40 years; refers to brother Wm. Green; Joseph Currier, proprietor 1646, Samuel and Thomas petition 18 (8) 1659, about the estate of their brother (in-law?) Win. Green (Mdx. files.)

He made a will 5 (3), inventory taken 25 (4) 1652; bequeathed to wife Mary; eldest son Thomas; other sons Samuel, Joseph and John; daughters Mary (Mrs. John) Brinsmead and Hannah Green; grandchildren (Caleb) and Joseph Carter, John G. and John B. Inventory mentions the shop, tools, iron and steel, etc. Samuel, shoemaker, referred in 1672, to land he had deeded to his honored father, Thomas Carter of Chariestown, before his death, some years past. The son Thomas, attorney for his brother Matthew Williams, sold land at Marblehead 9 (10) 1662.

III. THOMAS CARTER, PLANTER OF SALISBURY, MA.

This Thomas Carter first appears in New England records as a resident of Ipswich, MA in 1638, and probably he was the person, age 25, who sailed from England on the Planter, arriving in Boston in 1635, listed as one of three servants of George Giddings. Giddings settled at Ipswich. Unless it should later be learned that the Rev. Thomas Carter ever was located at Ipswich, it seems a reasonable assumption that the one at Ipswich, and later at Salisbury, was the same person who came with Giddings.

He was admitted a freeman 2 May 1638. To become a freeman it was required that the individual be a respectable member of some church. Persons were made freemen by the General Court and by the quarterly courts of the counties. None but the freemen could hold office and vote for rulers.

Thomas Carter, with several other Ipswich residents, including Edward French, Henry Brown, George Carr, Thomas Rowell and William Holdred, moved to Salisbury, were admitted Proprietors by the original twelve men and allotted land for their homesites in the new town. Approximately 70 names appear on the 1639 town map. Carter received land in 1640. His name appears on the 1650 list of Salisbury Commoners and he was taxed that year. He was one of 62 residents listed in the Land Division of 1654, and the name will be found in town records over the following years.

Little is known of his wife Mary. It is doubtful her surname will ever be learned. Nor do we now know when or where they were married. Their children, all born at Salisbury, were:

1. Mary, born 6 Oct 1642. Married Joseph Lancaster, she died after 1676.
2. Thomas, born 1643, and died 14 Aug. 1669.
3. Martha, born Feb. 1645, and died young.
4. Martha, born March 1647, mentioned in her father's will in 1676.
5. Elizabeth, born Apr. 1649. Married and living in 1676, probably dead by 1718,
but left several children.
6. John, born 18 May 1650. Married Martha Brown, daughter of William Brown(e).
7. Abigail, born Feb. 1652-53. Married 28 Dec 1670 Stephen Fanders, living in 1718.
8. Samuel, born 25 Oct 1656. Married Apr 1703 Sarah --, widow of Ephraim Brown.,
died 25 Oct 1718.
9. Sarah, marr. John Davis of Newbury. Was living in 1718.

Thomas Carter's will was dated 30 October 1676, and proved November 14, 1676. His "marsh and meddow lands" were given to his wife Mary for as long as she lived, and after her death were to be divided between sons John and Samuel. Daughters Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, Abigail and Sarah were to receive money. An inventory of his estate is attached to the will. His wife Mary died.

Descendants of Thomas and Mary scattered to other Massachusetts towns, then to New Hampshire and Vermont, and eventually may be presumed to have located in all states.

NOTE: Thomas Carter of Salisbury signed his will with his mark 'T'. It was thought maybe he was to sick to sign his will on his death bed. I have found other documents from Salisbury where he also signed with his mark 'T'. I now think that he could neither read nor write. Ron
