160. William WILLIAMSON

William served in the Revolutionary War under Colonel "Duykins" - Duychinck, fought at "Stayton Island" and Morristown. Was a guard at Amboy, New Jersey; Brunswick, Newark, Towle's Hook and Elizabethtown, NJ also.

2. William and Helena professed at First Presbyterian (must be Fleming Co. KY) 1813 and dismissed to New Hope 22 June 1827 along with Daniel Terhune at Flemingsburg, Fleming Co. Kentucky - Helena's brother.

3. William and Helena received as members of New Hope Church, Fleming Co. Kentucky 23 June 1827 along with Mary, Margaret; Daniel and Nancy, John and Jemimah. Samuel was received 04 May 1828. Joseph Steel was received 26 Aug. 1825.

4. Moves: 1811 from New Jersey to Fleming Co. Kentucky; c1833 to Mason Co. Kentucky; and in March of 1834 to Brown Co. Ohio.

Glenn Clift: "History of Maysville and Mason County, Vol. 1" 1956 Lexington, Kentucky , pp. 305-307:   WILLIAM WILLIAMSON AND HELENA, NJ No. W4862: On December 9, 1833, in Mason county, Ky., age 74, the soldier appeared in court and said he volunteered in 1775 in New Jersey, Middlesex county, to serve under command of Capt. William Williamson, Lt. John Moseroll in the regiment under Col. John Nelson, and they marched to Staten Island for a tour of two weeks and then, in 1776, he was again called into service under Capt. William Williamson for one month, at Elizabethtown, N.J., Newark and at Fowler Hook under Col. Duyker. Then, in 1777, again entered under Capt. William Williamson, Lt. Moseroll, Lt. Nixon, and Col. Nelson for three months at Elizabethtown.
 Again, in 1778, he served under same officers for one month at Cranberry, and then for one month at Spottswood. In 1779 he served for a tour of three months under Col. Nelson and Capt. Williamson and they were stationed at Woodbridge and also at Amboy and Blazing Star and at Smith's farm, and later in 1780, he served for one month at Morristown, under Capt. Dye and Col. Seely.
 The pensioner stated that he served for ten and one-half months and he said he had removed from New Jersey to Kentucky in 1811. John Allen, a clergyman and William McMichael gave affidavits, and said that they had been well acquainted with the pensioner.
 John Chambers and Arthur Fox said they had been well acquainted with the soldier.
  December 2, 1834 in Fleming county, Ky., David Terhune also said he was well acquainted with the pensioner, for forty-seven years.
 Rev. Andrew Todd gave affidavit, - said he was acquainted with him for twelve years.
 March 30, 1835, in Brown county, Ohio, the pensioner, then age 76, appeared in court, said he was born April 6, 1759, in Middlesex county, New Jersey.
 Elihu Parker gave affidavit same time and place. Said that he was well acquainted with the pensioner.
 James W. Campbell, affidavit: said he was acquainted with the soldier.
  August 15, 1839, in Brown county, Ohio, Helena Williamson, age 76, widow of the pensioner appeared in court, said they were married at Cranberry, New Jersey, on June 13, 1781, that the pensioner died December 22, 1835, in Brown county, Ohio. She produced the family record in handwriting of her husband as follows: William Williamson born April 6, 1759; Helena Terhune born June 23, 1763; William Williamson and Helena Terhune were married Sunday June 13, 1781; Samuel Williamson born November 6, 1785, at Kingston; John Williamson born Allegheny county, Maryland, December 17, 1787; Mary Williamson born April 15, 1790 in Allegheny county, Maryland; William Williamson born June 22, 1792 in Allegheny county, Maryland; Albert Williamson born April 11, 1795, at Amwell, New Jersey; Daniel Williamson born November 20, 1797, at Amwell, New Jersey; Abraham Williamson born March 21, 1800, Amwell, New Jersey; Margaret Williamson born February 27, 1803, Amwell, New Jersey.
  Affidavit of Samuel Williamson, same time and place as foregoing, stated that he had been acquainted with the family record for forty-five years and knew that the handwriting was that of his father, the pensioner.
  Helena Williamson, widow of the pensioner, was on the Ohio pension rolls at rate of $34.21 per annum, certificate issued December 7, 1839, and it was sent to Thomas H. Smith, Georgetown, Ohio.
 William Williamson, the pensioner, himself was on Kentucky rolls at rate of $35.60."

BIRTH: Court records establish his birth at about 1758.  He was orphaned by May 1758.

BIOGRAPHY: Indenture of Alexander Martin to William Johnston, 17 August, 1758: This Indenture Witnesseth that we Sampson Archer & John Matthews Churchwarden of Augusta Parish by Virtue of an order of Court continued and held for Augusta County May 1758 it was ordered that church wardens bind an orphan child named Alexander Martin according to Law pursuant to which I bind him to William Johnston to serve from the Date hereof until he shall be full twenty-one years of age during all which term the said Alexander Martin his Master faithfully shall serve his secrets keep his lawful commands everywhere gladly obey he shall do no damage to his said Master, nor shall not waste his said Master's Goods nor lend them unlawfully to any he shall not commit Fornication nor contract matrimony during the said Term he shall not play at cards dice or any other unlawful Game he shall not absent himself Day or Night from his said Masters service unlawfully nor haunt ale Houses Taverns or Play Houses but in all things behave himself as faithful servant & the said Wm. Johnston shall cause him to read write and cipher as far as the Rule of three and learn him a sufficient trade and procure or provide to him sufficient meat Drink washing & Lodging apparel and all other necessaries fitting for such appointment the said Term and for the True performance of all and every of said  Covenants and agreements either of the said Parties bindeth themselves to the other firmly be these presents in witness thereof of the said parties interchangeably put their hands and seals this seventeenth of August in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven Hundred and fifty-eight. This said master is to give this said servant freedom dues as the Law Directs when free. Signed sealed and Delivered in the presence of;    Seals: Pat Cunningham, William Johnston, John Archer, Sampson Archer, John Matthews  (Augusta County Parish Book, 1746-1776, p. 209.)

BIOGRAPHY: From Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch Irish Settlement in Virginia:

Volume I, p. 175 - 16 March 1784  "Alexander Martin, wounded at Guilford, is allowed as a pensioner."

 "     p. 256 - 18 October 1785 " Alexr. Martin allowed a pension of  Ð18, being incapacitated from labor by wounds and injuries received in the public service."

 "   p. 284 - 21 March 1786  "Alexander Martin, a pensioner proved that he received his wounds at the battle of Guilford, in North Carolina, 15 March, 1781, in Capt. Joseph Alexander's Company of Militia from Rockbridge County. Is aged 27 and resides in this County."

 "  p. 452-454 (?)  19 Feb. 1788  "Alexr. Martin, pensioner, to receive Ð30."

 "  p. 51 (?) 22 April 1789   "Alexander Martin to be paid Ð16, his pension for 1788."

Augusta Co. Ct. records 1785-1789 signed by I. Lyle, Jr. an dA. McClenachan. Depositions 22 Mar. 1786 that Alexander Martin proved he received his wounds at the Battle of Guilford, N. C. 15 Mar. 1781 in Capt. Joseph Alexander's Co. of Militia from Rockbridge Co.; Staunton, 1786 by Dr. Hugh Michey that Alex'r Martin, soldier in Capt. Joseph Alexander's Co. and Col. Samuel McDowell's Corps, age 27 years, was wounded at the Battle of Guilford under the command of Gen. Stephenson. "His place of residence is and hath been at Capt. Zachariah Johnston, Delegate at the Tinkling Springs in Augusta County"; 25 Oct. 1786 by Zachariah Johnston, "Martin having been an orphan, [I have advanced] my own money for doctors and boarding." Notations to be delivered to Capt. Johnston and Jas. Hamilton. Certificate authorizing pension approved by the Executive 13 Nov. 1786. Receipt to William Chambers and signed by Alex. Martin.

Received from Jeanne Ryan 14 June 1993, source is not named here but is a book:  "Alexander Martin was a Rev. Soldier & pioneer settler of Union Township. He bought a farm in 1798. The deed was signed by John Adams & Plymothy Pickering. Built a log cabin, then a stone house in 1816. As of 1965 the house still belonged to the family. Alexander is buried on the farm and is marked by a govt. marker."

The church wardens were instructed to indenture him in May of 1758 although he wasn't indentured to Wm. Johnston until Aug. 1758. He married Jane Black, married 25 Jun 1788 in Tinkling Spring Church, Augusta Co. VA.
