History
The Compton Cemetery is located on the corner of
Church Street (Old Plank Road) and Jane Street, Belford,
Middletown Township, Monmouth County, NJ. The lot was first
surveyed on May 24, 1941 by Henry C. McLean of Red Bank, Monmouth
County, NJ. The lot was again surveyed and verified by the author
on July 5, 1984 and again on July 9, 1989. This plot contains the
family of Cornelius Compton III, son of Cornelius and Lydia
(Crawford) Compton of Shoal Harbor (Port Monmouth), Middletown
Township, Monmouth County, NJ. The cemetery is overgrown and
measures roughly thirty eight feet wide by thirty two feet long
and all the stones were either destroyed into pieces or buried.
The author uncovered many fragments and several complete stones
and reburied them when the survey was completed.
