My name is Rich Southers and I am researching the Comptons of Orange County, IN. My ggrandfather was Thomas W. Compton. He married Tolitha Martin (nee Baxter) in 1893. Thomas is the son of Thomas Compton and Martha Frentress and was born in 1869. Thomas Compton (the elder) was the son of Larkin Compton and Becky Andrew.

I am interesting in any information pertaining to this line of Comptons.

Hello everyone. My name is Debra Compton. I live in Yakima Washington. I was born in Denver Colorado in 1965. My father was born in San Francisco to Samuel B. Compton and Florence(Snodgrass) Compton.

My grandfather was born in England and moved over here when he was a young teenager. I have many relatives residing in Texas and California at least that is where the majority of them now reside. I also know of relatives living in ST.LOUIS Mo., and some relatives living back on the east coast(somewhere!)

If any one might know of any possible family link with anyone I would love to hear about it. Also if I might be of help to anyone drop me an email and I'll see what I can do.

My fathers name is Lynden Eugene Compton, now deceased(1984). I have an Uncle in Texas by the name of Pat Compton that I do not know much about.  Other Uncles are: Norman Compton=ST.Louis, MO. and Ivan Compton now deceased of Lodi, Ca.

As soon as I get more information I will post it here. Thank You all!.

Clark,
I am not a Compton descendant, rather am researching for a client.
He descends from the Fairfax Co., VA family of James Compton, d. before
1850, and Verlinda Cash, d. 1850. Their son, Ludwell Compton inherited a
farm on Back Lick Road, Fairfax, Va. I believe this family might have had
earlier connections in Loudoun co., VA, but don't yet know that for sure.
Looking for the father of James Compton, b. about 1775.
What happened to Adeline Smith Compton, widow of Ludwell, who died
ca. 1855? The children of Ludwell were placed in DC homes after his death.

Received the following information from Sarah Browder.

By the way I was on a Internet web yest. and found the enclosed. You might
want to put out. They were found on Maryland Marriage Files from MD Archives
page by Robert Barnes.

(MDAD 7:216)
2. James Compton m. by 22 Jan 1751, Ann, extx, of John Pearce of St. Mary's Co

- Washington County, KY: Nancy A. Lewis (daughter of Henry Lewis and Nancy Nall) married Mr. COMPTON.

- Allen County, KY: James H. Gibson married Elizabeth COMPTON of Culpepper County, VA. She died in 1842 leaving 10 kids.

- Monroe County, KY: Jesse COMPTON was born 12/8/1851, in the southern part of Monroe County, KY, where he was reared and still resides. His father, David COMPTON, a native of NC, was born in 1811; removed in youth with his parents to Monroe County, KY, where he now resides. He served two years as a loyal soldier in the 37th KY Mounted Infantry. He is the son of William COMPTON, who died about 1833. David married Lucy W., daughter of Jesse and Sophia (Turner) Hood, of Monroe County (born in 1822, died in 1883), and their offspring are Jane (Austin), Riley, Samuel, Martha (Robinson), Abigail (deceased), Hiram J., Jesse, Thomas, and Laura B. (Jenkins). Jesse married 2/24/1876 to Sarah Copes (b. 4/25/1856, daughter of George Copes and Nancy Keith) of Clay County, TN. Children by Jesse and Sarah: Claudy, Cancel, Nunie (deceased) and Lucy. Mr. COMPTON is a farmer, having 100 acres of productive land in a good state of cultivation. He is also engaged in distilling both fruit and corn, at which he has been successful. In politics he affiliates with the Republican party. He is now a trustee of schools and overseer of roads.

- Hopkins County, KY: Rev. Samuel D. COMPTON was born in Hopkins County, KY, March 19, 1829, and is a son of Thomas A. and Martha H. (Hutchinson) COMPTON, natives of VA and of English descent. Thomas A. COMPTON, at the age of 22 years, about 1816, and while yet a single man, came to Hopkins County, KY, where he bought wild land near Nebo, improved a farm, upon which he resided until his death in 1849, in his fifty-fifth year. He served during the latter part of the war of 1812, at Norfolk, VA. He was a natural mechanic, and although he had never regularly learned any trade, he could turn his hand to almost any branch of mechanism, and made all his own wagons, agricultural implements and furniture. He was for many years an officer in the KY State militia. He and wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. After her husband’s death, however, Mrs. Martha A. COMPTON joined the Baptist Church, of which she was a member until her death in 1874, in her 74th year. Reuben COMPTON, the grandfather of our subject, was a veteran in the Revolutionary War, having served for over three years with Gen. Morgan’s riflemen. After his father’s death the care and support of his widowed mother devolved upon our subject, Samuel D. He continued to farm the home place on shares for several years, and in 1859 bought a part of the old homestead, to which he has added from time to time until he now owns a well improved farm of some 400 acres, where he is extensively engaged in farming and stock raising. He was a magistrate for this district for one term of four years. He was married 2/23/1859 to Miss Ella A. Townsend, a native of NC and a daughter of Wilson and Elizabeth (Ramsey) Townsend. Eight children have blessed this union; four sons and three daughters are living. Mr. and Mrs. COMPTON are members of the Missionary Baptist Church, in which he has been a licensed preacher for nearly 30 years, and a regularly ordained elder for more than 15 years. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, has advanced to the Royal Arch degree, and has been W.M. of his lodge. In politics, Mr. COMPTON is a Democrat. His eldest son, Theodore N. COMPTON, at the age of 17, was six feet and five inches in height, and weight 210 pounds. He joined the church at the age of 11, was licensed to preach at the age of 16, and regularly ordained at 17. He has had official charge of 3 different churches, and is at present pastor of the Clayville Baptist Church, of Webster County, although only in his 19th year.

- Metcalfe County, KY: John W. COMPTON was born in Edmonton, Metcalfe County, KY, 6/17/1839, and is the eldest of seven children - 3 sons and 4 daughters - born to Joseph R. and Martha N. (Hatchett) COMPTON, the former a native of Barren County, KY, and the latter of Pittsylvania County, VA. They were of Irish and English descent, and were born 3/2/1815 and 12/29/1817, respectively. Joseph R. COMPTON in early life learned the blacksmith’s trade at Glasgow, which he continued to follow, in connection with farming, until his death, which occurred 1/30/1860. For many years he was a captain in old State militia. His father, John COMPTON, was a native of VA, but immigrated to Barren County, KY, in a very early day. Mrs. Martha N. COMPTON is yet living. From her girlhood she has been a devoted member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Her father Archibald Hatchett, was also a native of VA, and served at Norfolk during the war of 1812. He, in about 1827, immigrated to southwestern KY. Her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hatchett, is living, in her 87th year, and receives a pension for her husband’s services. John W. COMPTON received a good English education in youth at the common and select schools of the County, and has also very materially added to his early training by his own exertions, and is a man of wide and varied general information, having been a close and careful reader all his life. After his father’s death he followed the blacksmith’s trade for about one year, and during that time commenced the study of law, often working with his book open on the forge. At the breaking out of the late civil war he took a very active and determined stand on the Union side and in December 1861, went to Columbia with the intention of enlisting in the 3rd KY Volunteer Infantry (Federal service), but when at the picket line a fight ensued between the Federal troops and a detachment of TX Rangers, in which he was severely wounded, from the effects of which he has never fully recovered. In July, 1865, he was admitted to the bar, and has ever since practiced law with most abundant success in Metcalfe and adjoining counties. In 1866 he was elected County attorney, and resigned that position in 1867 to run for the Legislature on the Union Democratic ticket, but was defeated by 40 votes. In 1871 he was appointed school commissioner for Metcalfe County, and was elected to the same office in 1873, serving four years in all. He married, 3/21/1872 to Carrie Glazebrook, a native of Glasgow, Barren County, KY, b. 11/27/1841. She is the daughter of Joseph and Lucinda (Pace) Glazebrook. Two sons and one daughter have blessed their union, viz: Ada, deceased, William G. and Clarence S., Mr. COMPTON and wife are consistent members of the church, he of the Cumberland Presbyterian and she of the Christian Church. He has been a ruling elder in his church for the past twenty years, and is also a member of the Masonic fraternity. In politics he is a Democrat, and is one of the energetic and successful lawyers and prominent citizens of the County.

I suspect that Sallie and Jane are sisters, but no proof yet, and don't know who the parents are for either. Some researchers state that David and William Thomas are brothers, but if they are I have not found the proof. William Thomas TRICE was son of Dabney TRICE and Unity Smith THOMASSON, and was listed in his fathers will along with his sisters, brothers and a couple

of grandsons... no mention of David, which leads me to believe they are not brothers.

The TRICE's, THOMASSON's, LUNSFORD's and others came from NC and VA

beginning about 1815.

Per Clark's suggestion, here's the line I'm chasing:

Robert Milward Compton /, Sr./ - born abt 1780 in Camden District, St. Mark's Parish, S.C. His (reported second) wife (who's in my line) was Frances Lynam of SC. Son in my line is William James C. His brothers were David C. and Robert M. jr. Robert sr. and Frances were married in 1798. He died in early 1800s reportedly in McIntosh Co., Georgia. His father was Thomas Compton, but not the one from Spartanburg, SC (who was married to Rachel and who was the father of Basil C. et al). Robert M.'s brothers were Henry, William H. and James (b. 4/25/1778, d. 1/24/1849, m. Mary Matilda Lynam (sister of Frances?)).

I have fairly complete info on all direct descendants to me (plus siblings along the way). Most are in Alabama (particularly Marengo County). Also Shrader (Michael Schroeder, MD circa 1740), Vanderslice (Renier V., Phila. Circa 1650), Cage (TN c. 1780), Westbrook (AL, Durant W.) and Hays (TN) lines in.

Hope this helps (or other info I can share will). I'd appreciate anything you have on Thomas C.

To All,
Some random Compton notes from Wilson Co.,TN Deed Books C-M(1793 to 1829):

1.) "Alsey Pace of Smith County to CHARLES COMPTON 100 acres on Round Lick, 20
Aug. 1810" ( Deed Bk D, p. 253)
2.) "John Patterson to CHARLES COMPTON 216 acres on Round Lick Creek it being
part of a tract Samuel Patterson bought. 12 Aug. 1815." (Deed Bk E, p. 580)
3.) "Benjamin Reeder to CHARLES COMPTON 50 acres on Round Lick Creek." (Deed
Bk G, p.338)
4.) "John Taylor to CHARLES COMPTON 30 acres on Round Lick Creek" (Deed Bk I,
p. 308)
5.) "Nicholas Smith and Sarah his wife to Doak Young 58 acres on Round Lick
Creek, it being land belonging to the heirs of CHARLES COMPTON deceased, 22
Sept 1828" (Deed Bk M, p. 272)

Round Lick Creek is near Watertown, Tenn. This amount of acreage would make
Charles Compton one of the larger landowners in this area. Sure wish I could
document the rest of his heirs.

Hi All,

A great web site at: http://bl-12.rootsweb.com/~mdannear/

This is a wonderful web site of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Baltimore
County is also represented. There is a lot of information on this web site
which is constantly being updated and some areas are still under
construction. I have listed below the information from their web site as
follows:

"Many records including death and birth certificates before 1988, copies of
wills, land records, court documents are archived at the Maryland State
Archives located in Annapolis.

MSA has on-line an Index to the Anne Arundel County 1880 Census. Another
good collection of genealogic data at MSA is a Church Records for Maryland

The First Families of Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties is a collection of
linked family group sheets of early settlers of Baltimore and Anne Arundel
Counties (for now we are working on families who were in the area by 1720)
and links to other sites with linage data Contributions of GEDCOMS or text
files are welcomed to add to these pages.

We have been adding On-line transcripts of Wills of Anne Arundel and
Baltimore County from the 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries

A recent addition to the project is a collection of Family Bible Records for
Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties.

On-line Transcripts of other old documents , such as deeds, grants, court
orders are also being collected to help researchers".

I recommend looking at the Church Records of Maryland. Not all surnames are online yet but quite a few are. Among them some Comptons.

Also, since my line of Comptons are from Anne Arundel County, MD, I hope someone out there will contact me if they are searching for the same Compton family who lived in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

I am specifically looking for the parents of William J.W. Compton and Caroline Jacob. They had 5 children: Edward Vernon who married Mary Julia Carr, Evelina Compton Tasker, Josephine Compton Bray, Alice Wilson Compton Tasker and Emily Jacob Compton Wilson. From my researching in the 2 books listed below, I suspect that William J.W. Compton's father was John William Compton a Rev. at St. James Parish, but so far I have not been able to prove it. I also believe his mother was Evelina Wilson Compton but I am not sure. Edward Vernon Compton and Mary Julia Carr were my ggrandparents. Who Caroline Jacob's parents were, I haven't a clue. I also have a lot of information on the Carrs of Anne Arundel County, MD.

I recently purchased 2 books from St. James Episcopal-Old Herring Creeke Parish 1663-1799 and 1800-1899. I also have a CD "Church Records: Maryland and Delaware, 1600s-1800s, FTM #178. If anyone wants a lookup, just ask. It may take me a while to get back to you, but I will. Meanwhile enjoy searching the Anne Arundel County web site.

[BERRY-L] BIG HOLES IN ANCESTRY...NEED HELP!
Date:
Mon, 06 Apr 1998 07:19:47 PDT
From:
"Kathleen Grone" <[email protected]>

Hello Cousins!

I will introduce myself again since I am very new to all of this. My
name is Kathleen Marie O'Donnell Grone, Kate to some. I live in Nebraska
and have been doing much research on my
ancestry. I hope that I can be of help to you and you to me. Any
information I have you are welcome
to. What I am trying to do is fill in some BIG blanks in my lineage.
The family names I am interested in at this point are BERRY, JOHNSTON,
COMPTON, SHARP, ARMSTRONG, LINDSAY, HENSLEY, WHITE and MONTGOMERY. I do
have other names in my family
tree such as , Cole, Ficklin, Dorsey, Hubbard, Griffith, but the
information I am sharing does not pertain
to them at this time. This is all from my maternal side (my mother was
an Armstrong) and I do have some information on my father's the
O'Donnell's from research done years ago.

Thank you EVA and others for you quick responses and for all your help!

DeVOE/BERRY: Hannah DeVOE BERRY daughter of Jesse DeVoe thought to be
from Louisiana
but the DeVoe name seems to be more prominent in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Hannah DeVoe was
married to John BERRY (b. 1786(7) in Kentucky and died 12/24/1867;
married May 8, 1831), son of
John T. Berry. I would like ANY information on these people. Birth
dates, place of birth, death, who
were John T Berry and Jesse DeVoe, who were they married to etc... I
would also like to know if they
were slave owners, or slaves, indentured servants or of mixed race, or
Indian. John and Hannah Berry were the
great-grand-parents of Audie Murphy, World War ll hero. They are my
great-great-great-great
grandparents. I have some very interesting information on Hannah and
some of their children.

COMPTON/WHITE: Hannah’s daughter Mary Polly Berry Compton, wife of
John Berry Compton are
my great-great-great grandparents. I would like to know about Mary
Polly. I have no
information on her husband. Were they cousins? Who was John Berry
Compton? Where/when was he
born etc.... They had a son Edward Berry Compton who married my
great-grandmother Mary Jane
White. I have NO information on her ancestry. I am told she was
Cherokee or of mixed races
(white/Cherokee).

LINDSAY/ARMSTRONG/COLE: Susannah Lindsay (born Sept. 29, 1812. She
died near St. Joseph,
Missouri), daughter of General Jesse Cole Lindsay married a Mr.
Armstrong. Who is Mr. Armstrong? (Isn't it interesting how some of
these people float in from nowhere! :)
They had a son William Eldridge Armstrong born in 1850, most likely in
Missouri. William E.
Armstrong married Mary Jane Montgomery (born 1856? in Wellington, Texas?
She is said to be the
Aunt of movie star Robert Montgomery). I have NO information on her.
Does anyone know of a family tree on Robert Montgomery, the Montgomery
name etc...

SHARP/HENSLEY/JOHNSTON: My great-grandparents were Benjamin Calvin
Johnston (b. Sept. 6
1870 in Texas) and Nora Belle Sharp (b. May 14, 1872 in Tennessee).
Nora Belle’s parents were
Andrew Sharp and Mary Hensley. The only information I have on them are
the names of their six
children. The parents of Benjamin Calvin are Mr. Johnston and Janie
Hensley. The only information I
have are the names of their nine children. I am told there is Cherokee
or Chickasaw (Indian of some kind) ancestry in the lineage.

Thank you for any and all help. If I can be of any help to you please
let me know.

Hi Everyone,

The time has come for me to get better organized. Tomorrow!

All of the e-mail addresses in my address book that I "think" are
connected to my interest in the SIMMONS surname and related families are
on this e-mail.

If you are here, and your address is still good, I would appreciate a
yes or no on my assumption on the SIMMONS connections. I find I have to
keep better records as memory no longer serves as well as it once did.
Not going to give up, just work harder.

Thanks to all for reading this, and if there are others you believe I
should add or changes I should make, please let me know.

Need help with this SIMMONS family which resided in St. Clair and
Randolph Cos., IL.

Levi SIMMONS
Born before 1775 probably in Maine or Mass.
To St. Clair Co., IL by 1820
1830, 1840 Randolph Co., IL
Died Sept 1840-Jan 1841 Randolph Co., IL
Married to Rebecca -----
Born about 1783 Maine
Probable children:

? Priscilla SIMMONS m.--- MCKINLEY and 1825 to William PEACH
Levi SIMMONS Jr. B.1802 ME m. 1824 Lois PEACH b. 1807 VT
William SIMMONS B.1805 MA m. 1826 Mary PEACH b. 1803 VT
Luther SIMMONS B.1812 ME m. 1834 Nancy CROZIER b.1807 SC
Henry SIMMONS B.1815 ME m. by 1841 to Mary LEACH b.1813 IL
John C. SIMMONS B.1826 IL m. by 1849 to Mary -- b. 1830 IL

Early census records suggest there were 11 children. Who were the
others?

Was Richard SIMMONS who m. 1840 St. Clair Co., IL to Rachel BEEZLEY
(BEASLEY) one of these children?

Richard & Rachel were probably residing in Decatur, Macon Co., IL by
1847 when their daughter Mary was born. Richard appears to have died by
1852 as Rachel appears in the 1860 Maries Co., MO with her second
husband John M. BEASLEY, her two children by Richard Simmons, and
children John Beasley b. 1852 MO, Linsey Beasley b. 1853 MO, James L.
Beasley b. 1856 MO, Hardin A. Beasley b. 1857 Maries Co., MO, and Betsey
Beasley b. 1860 MO.

Would like to establish who Richard SIMMONS' parents were and when and where he died.
